The term is also a term used in lithography. There is a particular woodcutting technique in which effects of light and shade are produced by printing each tone with a different wood block. The darkest tone is printed first and the lightest is cut and printed last in these monochromatic prints.

Chiaroscuro can also mean the interplay of light and shadow on a surface or describe something partly in shadow. In its broadest sense, chiaroscuro can be used to refer to the interplay or contrast of any dissimilar qualities.

In the 17th century this noun was formed from two Italian words: chiaro (clear, light) and oscuro (obscure, dark).
