"Saint Quentin" is a piece Paula performed during the Harbinger tour. It's not a song, really. She does sing at the end of "SQ," but the rest of it is more of an experimental spoken-word/dramatic-reading piece. I'll post the words so you can see what it's about: ************************************ _SAINT QUENTIN_ Me and Kaye and Shane and Rita got drunk one day after school because my brother gave me a bottle of vodka for my 18th birthday. He says, if you're 18, you can die for your country but you can't even buy alcohol. I drank it down like confidence to feel free and unimportant and slow. But with the two miles between me and home, I decided to hitchhike because nobody murders here. First truck pulled over on the soft shoulder and I stepped up into your booth and watched you as you slowly rolled the Drum cigarette with one hand. We drove I-80 to San Francisco where I finally called my Mom to tell her I was dropping out of school and that I was in love. But we fought, so I hung up. Eventually, I had my baby in May and we moved so many times the loan company lost us forever. I thought we couldn't afford a new car so I didn't understand how you came home with new clothes for us. A carriage. A coffee maker. An emerald necklace. A Ford Mustang. You said not to ask. You said that you got the things for me ‘cause you were scared your love wasn't enough. But I didn't want you leaving me at night to come home with a new coffee maker. And I was afraid you couldn't stop. Remember the night? Flashlights? The man with the brass chess set had a gun and shot you in your hand. You couldn't understand the headache of voices and you put a kitchen knife in him. And then the moment stood still. You could see his intestines falling out. [this next part is sung] You cry to me ‘cause you're sorry All I see is metal and gray They took you away And our baby's now ten And I see your face in the face of other men And I'm prayin' I'm prayin' I'm prayin' to Saint Quentin Let us go Because he's locked me up into being alone ************************************ The content and delivery are equally melodramatic and I can't imagine her ever doing this piece today, but there's still something about "Saint Quentin" that I really like. How could I not love a performance that includes the line "You could see his intestines falling out"? That's just too weird not to adore. But, the main thing that wins me over is the way she sings the last portion. When she gets to the part about "I'm prayin'" she's really singing it more like "I'm praaaaAAAAAAyIN... and I'm praaaaAAAyIN...". Her voice soars. Here's some trivial information for you. You might notice that she mentions her friend, Shane, in the first line. If you check out the People magazine article from back during the This Fire tour, you'll see a photo of the man himself sitting next to Paula.
