She kicked ass. - -Bri - --- Kara & Tina wrote: > Somebody slap me... I'm having a hard time thinking of an example of a song I know that I would describe as "moving without being challenging." I'm coming up empty. For me, I think the song has to be musically or lyrically challenging to my emotions in order to move those samesaid emotions. Perhaps I'm just misunderstanding what was meant. Actually, I said something similar to this the first (and only) time I ever saw Donna DeLory perform. It was at The Living Room here in NYC (remember that night, J.??) and I must admit my comments weren't as generous as those I've read from JourneyBear, nor was I anywhere near as kind. I don't really care to go into bitter detail about what exactly was said, but just take that "trance-inducing" and "without being challenging" part and think of it in an unflattering way and you'll pretty much get the idea of what came out of my mouth that night. I believe everyone is entitled to their opinions and personal musical tastes and I certainly don't mean to discount Steve's admiration for Donna's music or to throw stones (until we're dead - ;^) ) at Jay's girlfriend, but Donna DeLory's wispy, waifish voice and uninspired musical style put me to sleep faster than a double-shot of Nyquil. Quite honestly, if we hadn't been there as a show of support for Jay, I'd have left after the first few songs. You don't have to brave any flames with me, JourneyBear - just an opposing opinion. Enjoy your screensavers. :^) Kenn ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time. Perhaps I'm just >misunderstanding what was meant. > To tell the truth, I'm not 100% behind this description. I mulled it over a long time before sending, wondering if there was a better word than "moving." But it's close enough to what I mean. Which is hard to put into words. Writing about music is imperfect because you're using different media, and it's impossible to accurately convey one's perception of a musical production or performance because reading a description is not the same as listening to the actual music. But we all do try, don't we? That said, let me try to clarify through example. Ani DiFranco is, to my mind, a brilliant writer, singer, guitarist, and producer, and can work a crowd like no other. She is both moving and challenging. But more often than not she is too challenging, too attention-demanding, for casual listening. Even though she has written some very sweet and smooth love songs ("Both Hands," "Overlap"), I can't listen to her over and over because she fairly requires paying close attention. Compare this with Dar Williams, who has writen some very moving songs but is not at all challenging, as she stays comfortably within standard expectations of what a song should be. Her "February" is one of the most poignant songs I know. When the boy tells the girl "I still love you" as a last-ditch effort to save their doomed love, it brings a tear or two to my eyes every time. Every time. And I don't mind, somehow, because not only am I constantly impressed with this graceful turn of wourds and melody, her singing is sweet, soft, easy on the ears. She draws the listener into her world, rather than push him/her toward her point of view. Veda Hille is quite the opposite, challenging without being moving. Part of this is because her lyrics are obscure, part because I feel feel she tries to jam them into my ear. I think most artists will produce music that contains factors such as these and others in varying degrees. A lot of the time I just want to listen to music that has something to say, says it well, and is neither boring nor annoying. It's a balancing act, and I think Donna DeLory does this very well. Is this helping to make things clearer? I find Paula's music covers such a wide range of emotions and subjects and instrumentation that it tends to be a bit much to take in large doses. Don't get me wrong - I think she's great, and love a lot of her songs. But songs like "Bethlehem" and "Happy Home" and "Me" move me a lot more than "Mississippi" and "Tiger" - I would just rather be drawn in than pushed, most of the time. That's my general personal preference, and it's driven more by my emotional responses than intellectual concerns. I find nearly all of Donna's music to be easy to take, and still moving, compelling without forcing me in one way or another. I hope this makes sense. I really haven't put a lot of conscious thought into this sort of analysis before, and may not be doing that good a job of describing these processes. A work in progress. >I believe everyone is entitled to their opinions and personal musical >tastes >and I certainly don't mean to discount Steve's admiration for Donna's music >or to throw stones (until we're dead - ;^) ) at Jay's girlfriend, but Donna >DeLory's wispy, waifish voice and uninspired musical style put me to sleep >faster than a double-shot of Nyquil. Quite honestly, if we hadn't been >there as a show of support for Jay, I'd have left after the first few >songs. > Just goes to show what an emotional, imperfect, irrational force music is/ Everyone's perception is different, unique, and true more to that same person than anyone else. It's like the parable of the elephant and the blind people. Actually, I went in for that show because I did a little research on Donna and found her intriguing. Jay's presence was secondary - a good part of my motivation, but still secondary. And I don't think of her as being Jay's girlfriend, as she has been a musician in her own right for much longer than their relationship. They have a bunch of stuff there, mostly free. The Donna ss is from her website, or rather the old fan club site, now under renovation. I was going to send you these as attachments but a server was down somewere in the vicinity of my day job, so I couldn't go online. Copying them to floppy and sending from home didn't seem to work. I mean, if I can't install them on my computer something's wrong, and I don't see the point of sending out incomplete or unusable files. I'll try again tomorrow.
