Her fans are very devoted, and she is open enough with them to put out requests like tips on apartments at shows. She often brings fans up on stage to sing along - they're right up front singing every word, so she can't miss them - and they almost always have the songs down cold. She mentioned about a year ago that she was having problems with her computer, so her fans chipped in. It's nice to be nice to the nice. But back to Paula. Great reviews! Thanks so much for the enlightenment re: IDWTW. It's fascinating how a song can resonate within completely different people with competely different histories and sensibilities. This can lead to misinterpretation, as one tends to perceive art filtered through one's experience, so it really helps to know what the artist's inspirations and intentions were. About to veer: Similarly, Sara Hickman has written two of her best songs ("A Room Of My Own" and "Take Me With You") based on critical moments in her grandmother's life. The songs are beautiful and powerful enough on their own, but knowing that they were based on a real person who meant so much to the writer adds dimension to the listening. Veering back now . . . > > Well, for those of you who bothered to read the entire post, thanks! >We will try to post more reviews of individual shows. > Well, if you must ;-) but you really did a good job of putting me there. In fact, this past Saturday Kevin showed up at The Folk Festival In The Pines on Northampton MA! Mark Erelli, a local area singer/songwriter, was doing a set with a band, and Kevin was an added guest. Funny to have seen him on national TV just 1 1/2 days earlier. He also showed up for the closing song of the event, The Nields' encore of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth," squeezing out some searing lead work. The ensemble included Melissa Ferrick, John Gorka, Erin McKeown (look out for her), Vance Gilbert, and on and on. >It's only a bittersweet end to her tour due to the >fact that this addiction we have to Paula is a real drain on the bank >account! > Oh, I have a feeling you'll find someone else to devote yourselves to! Mark Erelli, a local area singer/songwriter, >> was doing a set with a band, and Kevin was an added guest. Actually, Kevin mentioned Mark Erelli when we talked to him after the show... He said he was going to be working with Mark-- I don't know if Mark is about to put out a new album or what.... what is he like? > Oh, I have a feeling you'll find someone else to devote yourselves to! Au contraire, mon frere!.... I cannot afford the money or emotion it takes out of me (us)!!! Typically (and don't any of you jump down my throat about this one- I said TYPICALLY), women are very committal and monogamous-- Paula has us, hook, line and sinker! The only people we would like to see more than once are: Tara MacLean, Peter Stuart, Jill Sobule, Donna DeLory, kd lang but with ticket prices so high, especially for kd, it's not likely. And for any of these people, extensive travel is not an option (i.e. more than 4 hours driving, depending on cost of tix, etc.). Those are just a few people that pop into my head at this particular moment. We'll only go 2,000 miles out of our way for Paula! ;) > BTW, no mention of Donna DeLory. Any > impressions? Did Jay play with her? So sorry!!! We loved Donna! We have pretty much all of her music (all that we know of that's been released, even the 'pop' album) and Tina has seen her before, but she really had a fantastic show. She plays a harmonium, an instrument from India, which seems to be similar to an accordion in the manner it's played (you don't hold it like an accordion- it sits on a stand, but you squeeze air in and out of it like an accordion) but with the long, drawn out notes like a bagpipe, if that makes any sense. I thought her vocals could have been louder, as she seemed to be drowning in the music and crowd noise (she had to play as people were finishing their dinner- at the Coach House, if you make dinner reservations when you buy tix, you usually get better seating- we got there early enough so that we were done eating before anyone played). She sold alot of cd's after her set. People seemed to be impressed by her.... she's very into her music and really gives it her all. It has more of an ethereal quality. A special guest was there to sing "Please" with her, Madonna's other back-up singer, Niki Harris. (It seems that Donna and Niki are much closer to each other than either are to Madonna. I guess that's not surprising since they are both much more down to earth.) I'm not positive, but I think Niki's solo career is mostly Gospel... I just remember her saying that she recently played a benefit concert in Detroit for her father who passed away... I could be wrong on her genre, though. Her voice is just so powerful, you imagine it would be. In fact, when singing with Donna, she held the microphone down to about waist level so as to not drown out Donna's voice. Jay did not play with her. In fact, neither did her regular drummer. Filling in for him was Quinn (he only uses his first name), another Berklee School of Music person! He has his own album out and Donna sings the majority of the songs.... we both highly recommend it! He seems to be a very talented musician and lyricist. Tina took it to work, so I don't have the title... I think it is "Searching for Silence". It might only be available online or if he's playing for someone at a show. When the cd case/book shows up around here, I can post the website. Anyone interested in Donna's website, it's donnadelory.com. It requires Flash, but it is very cool... very well done. She might even have Quinn's link there. Donna bought nikiharris.com for Niki (and that's not cheap!), so that site will be forthcoming. Any more questions? I've seen Quinn with Donna and Cameron a couple of times, but there was one time, at a Starbuck's in NYC, that Jay was in the audience, and jammed with them for the second set. Jay played a hand drum for a while, then switched with Quinn, and finally switching back. Very cool indeed. It seemed likely that something like that could happen pretty easily with Donna opening for Paula. Funny thing about those Maine drummers, eh? Very similar drum sets, and they claim to have developed them independently, though I'm sure they've discussed this stuff over the years. BTW, DDL and crew are coming around the east coast - Fez in NYC Monday 8/28. A few other dates as well, go to the website for more info. Peace JourneyBear >< > impressions?
