[Kara & Tina ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 15 Aug 2000 02:01:01 -0400 From: Kara & Tina Subject: (harbinger) A bittersweet end... Hello everyone! Long time no post! (The original subject to this post was "anyone go to the HOB, LA show?" but then it got really long, so I had to change it....) Didn't anyone from the list make it to the last show at the House Of Blues in LA? We were not able to extend our vacation to include the last show, and are dying to hear about it! We are also on the Jill Sobule email list now, and heard that Warren Zevon did I Kissed a Girl w/ Jill! But, of course, they didn't say anything about Paula's show. We quickly became fans of Jill, but I have to warn anyone who might be interested in her email list that they just have WAY too much to say over there! Every time we log on, there are anywhere from 20 to 40 new messages, and more than sometimes it's not Jill content at all, and almost always, they don't change the subject line- so the subject is "My Website" but they are talking about whether or not Jill singing a couple bars of 'Sister Christian' counts as a song for the setlist. And then you get 2 people having a 1-on-1 conversation but they are posting it to the whole list. Kind of annoying, but Jill herself is a member and does post! (Apparently, some of her fans got together and bought her an iBook so she could keep in touch with her fans.) She is very cool with her fans. We just prefer this list, of course, but not just because it's Paula. For the most part, when someone here has something to say, it's worthwhile and not just filling up precious mailbox space! I know we should post reviews of every show we go to, but we still have an old and slow computer, and sometimes it's just not worth the frustration to even turn it on! We are more than willing to share our wonderful experiences, but they will probably trickle in over time. For now, I'll say that the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center show is still way up there in the top 5, if not thee best show we've been to. The venue itself and the energy... it wasn't overpowering, and the crowd was quiet when it should have been--just so respectful (even during the opening, Peter Stuart- he was able to step away from the microphone and sing truly acoustically) And it's still the only show in which during the part in Feelin' Love when it's just Paula whispering/talking with very little accompaniment, the whole audience spontaneously started snapping their fingers to the beat and it was just the coolest sound and feeling. Loud-but-good-energy-wise, it was the Bluebird in Bloomington, IN. They were very receptive to Jill, and the energy reached a truly feverish pitch during Paula's set. She said that they'll definitely be back in Bloomington and thanked the audience from "the tips of [her] toes". I would strongly recommend anyone within a reasonable distance catch her there next time around!!! We always enjoy seeing Paula perform and are just as excited at every show, but you just can't choose how each audience will behave. Another loud high-energy show was Petaluma, CA!!! Paula just totally fed off of the energy, and it was especially meaningful to her since the previous 2 shows were at Caesar's Tahoe (not the best crowd for anyone to play for- Casino shows truly suck vibe-wise). At one point, she exclaimed, "Petaluma! Petaluma! Petaluma!" The reception was so completely opposite the one at Tahoe, it really blew her away! The setlists didn't change much, except during this 2nd leg of the tour, she wasn't doing Jolene or Be Somebody until the 2nd show at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA, where she did both. One important thing to mention is that I guess we are no longer sick of hearing IDWTW live. Now we cry during the whole song because she explained it's meaning to her during the first Tahoe show (and at every show we attended thereafter). Paraphrasing what she said: 'She wrote it for her grandfather who passed away almost immediately after she wrote it, and she knows his soul lives on in this song and makes it just go and go and go.' And during the line, "the years pass by and now he has granddaughters", she pushes her fist into her chest and you know she is talking about herself and it seems like she is almost holding back tears. Well, we were not! How could we when both of us have lost our closest grandfathers... Another lyric-related thing is that when she says in Me, "I am not the person who is singing, I am the silent one inside." she really means it! At the 2nd San Juan show, she kept talking about herself in the 3rd person, saying, "Paula Cole needs a break" and "Paula Cole's moving to LA" as if this REAL person living the real life, the non-performing life, was a different person all together. Kind of interesting, psychologically. Well, for those of you who bothered to read the entire post, thanks! We will try to post more reviews of individual shows. Take care-- it seems that we will be without anything new from Paula for a while. Talking to her after the 2nd San Juan show, she doesn't think they'll even start recording until late Spring 2001 at the earliest. Kevin and Jay (and probably Rakiya and Doug, too) will be working with other people in the meantime to earn a living. Doug said he really enjoyed working with Paula and hopes that when the time comes for a new album, he doesn't have any scheduling conflicts so he can re-join the band. It's only a bittersweet end to her tour due to the fact that this addiction we have to Paula is a real drain on the bank account! OK, I'm done now.
