This is my review of Sunday's festivities and it'll probably just as long. This past weekend was just an amaizing experience and it's just pouring out of me. I feel as if it'll lose its energy if I decide to start editing. Again, if you're annoyed with the large posting, I deeply apologize. Today, I went with my other close friend, Andrew. I won the tickets on Paula's site and it was fun to say that I was on Paula Cole's guest list when I went up to WILL CALL. Actually, I felt pretty dumb and cheezy, but how often do you get to do that? Yesterday was even hotter than Sat. There was alot more people as well. Suprisingly, it didn't take anything away from the amazing energy you felt when you got there. While we were walking in, I was telling Andrew how I thought it would be cool to partake in the drum circles. As we walked in, I asked if he would mind if we just watched and listened for a few minutes. Minutes later, we're both handed drums. Then, the leader asked if any of us wanted to be in the parade, to just stick around. Next thing I know, me and a hundred other drummers (and one of my best friends) are takin' over WOMAD. Everyone loved us. You couldn't help but hear the transient music and the energy of people walking through. Everyone just parted for us, cheering and clapping along. Luckily, Bonnie Raitt was done because we ended up walking through the crowd of people that were directly in front of the Main Stage. Not one person was pissed either. Then, we went and watched these Mongolian throat singers. They're name is Huun-Huur Tu. If you ever get to see them, make it a point to go. They were so intense. They were making didjeradu (sp?) sounds, yet a bit more (almost) abnoxious. It was amazing and you couldn't help but be drawn in. About 30 min from Paula's show, my friend and I planted our butts down, in front of the stage, under the "Big Top" stage. It was very much like it sounds...a circus tent, with a stage and wooden floor and seats. This time, I was even closer. Paula and friends, weren't more than 10 ft away. Of course, the dumb-ass that I am, forgot the freakin' camera at home. They were having sound problems and Paula's set started about 30 min. late. The crowd got a little impatient and started chanting, "Paula". It was weird. No one was pissed though. BTW, the only thing that was unplugged about this show was that Kevin only played with electric guitars. The whole band for a majority of the set. She finally came out and boy, was she happy. She wouldn't stop saying how much fun she was having at WOMAD and how honoured she was to be there. Of course, she also thanked Peter for the support he's given to her over the years. She looked adorable as well. She had on this navy blue, long sleeved, farmer girl shirt that showed off her tummy that tied above her waist. She also had on a long denim skirt, with a really high slit that went up the middlle (it was cut a bit high and almost showed her 'big dark mystery). It was so high that I was almost scared to even look at her. I was blushing...lol. She also had on these cute clunky, wooeden and blocky, black japanese style sandals (they came off after the 1st song). SETLIST Watch the Woman's Hands Happy Home Amen Me Cowboys Be Somebody Hitler's Brothers I Am So Ordinary Jolene I Don't Want to Wait Anyway, she started with "Watch the Woman's Hands" (I think). Actually, I can't remember if this was the first song of not. I haven't heard that in so long and I had forgotten how poweful it was. The band sounded excellent. The band sounded much better with this one, than they used to, yet it was still a very organic song. She just held that note, towards the end, for a long, long time, without showing an ounce of weakness. "Amen" was really good. Yesterday was my first time to experience it live and I did love it, even though I didn't put a review down. Yesterday, Kevin was on electric guitar and added his spacey guitar twangs, that replace the album version's scratching of Gang Starr. During Sunday's version, he played acoustic, so it was a bit more raw sounding (like the album). I really liked both of them a lot and equally. It was interesting to experience the 2 different versions in 2 days. I guess they weren't all that different, but the acoustic one was more organic in the sense that it didn't have all the space effects to it. Jay also puts me in a trance when he plays this one live. "Happy Home" was another gem. I really love how the band does this now. It's always been a favourite and it just gets better. I was very suprised that she sang "Be Somebody" since it seems like she's been ignoring this as of late. She came out and told us all about the day she was reading the paper about a kid who watched his dad get killed. I thought she was going to cry towards the end of the story. Then, she sang it and just wailed it. She did mess up a verse and sang, "La la la la" until she remembered where she was. It was pretty cute. I'd have to say that the band fully rocked on "Hitler's Brothers". I never thought they could do this one better, but they proved me wrong again. It was so intense being right up in front, watching her whistle like that. Then, having them all just rock out with Paula beating on the drums. The crowd went crazy and gave her a standing ovation instantly. I swear, I thought the tent was going to fly off. She then got the crowd back down with "I Am So Ordinary". Again, this is one of those songs that is just beautiful. I was getting nervous 'cause she hadn't done "Jolene" yet and that has to be my favourite live songs that she performs. She paid tribute to Dolly and then it was just like old days. Jay, Kevin & Paula. She went crazy on this one; she was so full of charisma, charm, sassiness & just had such great stage presence. As she started beatboxing, the mic went out. She was going along but the mike wouldn't come back on. The band kept playing while she was tryin' to work it. The sound came back and she started from the top (of beatboxing) but the mic went out. She just smiled, thew the mic across the stage and grabbed for Doug's mike (not a cordless one). Her sound engineer was trying to give her another cordless one, but she just kept smiling and said how she was fine with this one and didn't care and she could make due with what she had. Keep in mind that Jay and Kev are still rockin'. She took it from the top and homegirl was beatboxin' harder than I've ever heard her. That inner fire started growin alive and made her lungs just blow. It was so intense!!!!! It also was like the extended version because it ended up taking so long to get the mic finally working. We all gave the girl yet another standing ovation just for kickin' ass. Can you say DIVA?!?... She closed with "IDWTW"...blah, blah, blah... Finally, the closing ceremony of WOMAD. Hopefully, you're still awake for this part. It was one of the highlights of the whole weekend. From 8 - 10 pm, it was a huge, long, 2hr jamfest with all of the musician's that played for the 3 days. First, it was the Mongolian throat singers. Then, you hear these female african vocals singing with the Mongolian guys, and they sounded great together. Then, there were these rockin', tribal drum beats for awhile that was just amazing. All of a sudden, I hears this beautiful roar. It was Paula! She was just singing, "Yeah" or something like that. It was amazing. She was up there singing for a good 5 minutes and just feeding the crowd. Then, I think Jill Sobule came out and did her thing. It was so cool to see Paula up there. Her and Jill went to the background and danced around while all the other artists came up and didnt their thing. I wish I could explain all of the other ones' that were up there, but I couldn't. There were just too many styles of music going on and it all sounded wonderful. At one point, Paula was up, on the stage, totally dancing, laughing and having a great time with her boyfriend. They were totally cute together. This 2 hours jam session was simply incredible. I felt so honoured to be there, espcially knowing that this is the only one in the US. Paula even made a reference to how Seattle was one of her favourite cities and that this was one of her reasons why. Who'd a thunk it??? It's shame when you start not taking advantage of the cool things that are around you. Anyway, that's it for this review. I'm pooped. I've been typing for about 2.5 hrs. I would love for other people to post their reviews, so I hope to hear from you. - -Bri __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Kick off your party with Yahoo! I bet that explains why the newer mixes are popping up as demos on ebay. Maybe they finally realized that the song was a huge hit and that they should've done this earlier. Who knows. I do hope that they make this single commecially available so I can have a listen. I love that song. I was a bit bummed that they didn't play it at WOMAD, but I don't think it would've fit the whole theme of the event. that's all. - -bri __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
