I don't have time to write my full review yet, but will do so later this evening or tomorrow. All I can say is that you all should definately do your best to go to next year's event. It was the most amazing musical event I've ever been to. Paula was soooo amazing. I've never seen her so happy before either. You could just feel all the positive energy from everyone that was there and she was just feeding off of it. She stole the main stage on Sat and stole the Big Top stage during her unplugged set on Sunday. It's been 3 years since I've seen her last and all I can say is that she has grown so much musically and personally. Her confidence was amazing and showed right through each of her sets. OK, I must get back to work, but I will tell you more about it soon. Have a great day! - -Bri __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Kick off your party with Yahoo! As stated in my previous posting, this festival is the BEST musical experience I've had yet. It kicked Lilith in the ASS...lol Anyway, I arrived later in the day, on Sat, because all I initially wanted to do was see Paula. I thought it was just going to be another big concert like Lilith or HORDE. Well...I was wrong. You walk up to Merrymoor Park and you can see all the beautiful flags all over the park; waving in their earthtones. In the background, you can hear various types of music, faintly. When you first walk in, the drum circles are to the left. They are so amazing. I made a plan to partake in the drumming sometime during the 2 days I was attending. My friends and I walked around a bit and absorbed all the positive energy while enjoying the beautiful, clear blue-sky and warm weather. About 20 minutes before Paula's set on the mainstage, I made my friends go with me up to the stage. This was definately the closest I've been at one of her shows. The very front was fenced off so I'd say I was about 20 ft in front center. The mainstage area ended up becoming packed, to my suprise. Then, the show... THE SHOW (the setlist is almost in order, but not quite) Happy Home Amen Pearl Throwing Stones Tiger Mississippi Cowboys Me God Is Watching Encore: Feelin' Love Black Dog I Don't Want to Wait Let me tell you, when the girl took the stage, the crowd was hers. The music wasn't even on yet and the crowd was cheering. She came out with the biggest smile I've seen to date (on her) and she was waving to the audience and you could just feel how great she felt. I knew at that point it was going to be a great 2 day weekend. WOMAD is definately the type of even that you can tell she feels most comfortable in. Before I continue, I want to say that I am not going to review every song. As much as they all sounded great, I am going to save time by only writing about the ones that really blew me away...(this may be awhile) The first song was "Happy Home". I was floored. I had never heard that done with the full band before. It was just amazing. That had always been one of my favourite songs and her and the band just nailed it. I can tell that the vocal lessons paid off because the girl wails it even more and holds her notes longer than ever. It is amazing to see how the band has grown in just 3 years. After "Happy Home", the set list got a little fuzzy because I just got on a little Paula high. I was tee impressed to have a clear thought. Anyway, I think the 3rd song was "Pearl". I've only heard the live version on the Bonfires EP and I loved the isntrumentation of it bettern than the album. However, being there in person is a whole new experience. Between Jay's beats and Kevin's electric guitar, the song was sounding almost industrial. I was in heaven and she hadn't even started singing yet. Again, you can tell how much they are at playing "Pearl" since the time that it was recorded for the Bonfires EP. Paula and Raikyia (sp?) just kicked ass. The harmonized perfectly together and wailed some of those notes. "Throwing Stones" rocked...as usual. I don't like how they keep the keyboard perpendicular to the piano now. You couldn't see her as clearly when she kicked the shit out of it with her combat boots at the end. They also needed to crank up the volume on the piano because you couldn't hear the left hand darkness of the piano that well. Otherwise, it still rocked. I have always loved "Tiger" live. I was psyched that my friends were with me 'cause I felt like that song would be a great experience for their first time. I just love it when she starts grunting and screeching. That little girl sure has some fire in her. Another rocker was "Mississippi". I think I really like a lot of her angrier stuff live because you can really feel all that energy exuding from her little body. It's so intense. She made some cute little move where she stuck her ass out to us when she sang, "I like it from behind". I can't seem to say how much more amazing she's gotten in 3 years. Between her funky dance moves, crystal clear vocals, stage presence, etc...you can just see that she's become more confident. As sick of I am of "Cowboys", I have to say that she did a great version of it live on both days. Musically, it hasn't changed that much over the years. However, when she flipped the crowd off, this time, it was so cute. She had her leg lifted a bit, behind her and she was pointing out towards the audience when singing, "While you go have a..." Then, when she sang "beer", her index finger went down and up came the "bird". She did it with a sarcastic, coyish grin on her face and the crowd fuckin' loved it. I really am sick of this song, but for some reason, she didn't look sick of it. I guess that people still love that song and if the crowd gets good energy for it, then it just feeds her and she's fine with it. "Me" always almost puts me into tears. I swear she reading my mind when putting that song to pen. I won't go on, on this one, because this is one of those cheezy, personal songs of mine. Encore time... The crowd was just yelling for more. I was glad when it didn't take long for her and the band to take the stage again. She came back with "Feelin' Love". This song kinda' bores me live, but I do appreciate the band jamming at the same time. OK, I this was my first time to see "Black Dog" live. The crowd went crazy for her for this. I think it took everybody for suprise. She did a great cover of this song! She was so sassy!!! There was a point in the song where she was shakin' her tits at everyone. It was kinda' weird for me to see her do that, only because she's never really done that till recently. As I said previously, she seems to feel some kind of freeness lately and I think it's great energy for her. I have this great feeling that she is going to be around for a long time. Nothing big like Madonna, but more on the level of Tracy Chapman or Bonnie Raitt. No big radio songs, but someone who gains a larger following, over a long period of time. Her boyfriend (can't remember the name!!!) came out and did "God Is Watching" with her. I never really cared for this song much, but it did just RAWK!!! live. It's definately a powerful song onstage. She was just wailing the chorus and it just seemed like the volume was just cranked. I think the WOMAD crowd heard and felt the message. Being the mainstage show, she definately sang more of her powerful and energetic songs. It was a great selection as far as I'm concerned. She was very animated throughout the performance and every song had its energy that just drew the crowd in. When I turned around, midway through her set, the place was just packed. It wasn't like that in the beginning. I think that people just heard those lungs and just walked on over. The crowd at WOMAD is definately more her speed and vice versa. She couldn't stop saying how much fun she was having and how beautiful it was. Honestly, it was too. It was like going to a huge festival in the woods, with really good music. Initially, I thought was it was just going to be just another, large concert with too many people. I was pleasantly suprised. On for Sunday's review... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Kick off your party with Yahoo!
