Brian asked: >BTW, what's everyone's favorite live Paula song? 1. Nietszche's Eyes -my ultimate live Paula experience now and forever; I hope she puts this one on her live album someday because it was the first time one of her performances brought tears to my eyes 2. Suwannee Jo -runs a very close 2nd; the moodiness of the music and subject matter set against Paula's dark, dusky (then wailing) voice is part of what PC's music is all about to me 3. Throwing Stones -very fond of the tweaks she's made to TS for this tour - it's always been a great live song, but she continues to breath new life into it 4. La Vie En Rose -it was a great surprise in the set list and who better to cover a drama queen like Piaf? Paula always did justice to this cover and put her own mark on it as well. That voice!! 5. Hitler's Brothers -it made my cut for top 5 because (a) it has the best energy of all the performances she and the band do (talk about showmanship and musical and vocal interpretation!!) and (b) the use of jazz whistling just can't be matched for execution and originality. To me, HB is one of the band's signature songs, not just a song that one would associate with Paula. All the players are stars on that song. >I actually saw her sing "Saturn Girl" & "Road to Dead" once. I've still never seen her perform "Saturn Girl" (although I have heard several live versions of it on various CDs), but I saw her perform "Road To Dead" a lot during her last tour. It's most definitely one of my favorites - - especially with her working those finger cymbals and doing her Eastern dance bit - it just didn't make the cut of the top 5 for me. My runners-up (in no particular order): I Am So Ordinary, Road To Dead, Pearl, Jolene and Mississippi. My favorite Paula Live performances: 1) Feelin' Love---The night we saw and heard her do this at the Troubadour Kevin played an amazing guitar solo and Paula followed with and even more amazing orgasmic scat solo. After the song my friend Mark turned around and said "I'll have what she's having"(When Harry Met Sally). Absolutely the most intimate and exposed performance I've ever seen any artist do. 2) Me-- No matter how jaded I got towards this song because of the radio play when I hear her do it live and sing "It's me who's too weak and me who's too shy to ask for the things I love", I get chills. I wish I had written that. 3)So Ordinary--This song breaks my heart everytime I hear her play it live, just her and piano 4) Bethlehem--Great imagery in the song. She's always given such an emotional performance when I've heard her do this live. 5) Carmen--I just like the groove of this song. The band plays it with such soft intensity, just the way Paula sings it. Of Course I love all the ragers too: Throwing Stones, Tiger, Mississippi, Hitler's Brothers. I also always like to see Paula live just to see Jay Bellerose play drums. What a great accompanist, you can tell he loves the songs he's playing. Now I'm really looking forward to seeing her out here on the west coast in August.
