Subject: (harbinger) Be Somebody - The New DJ Single I got my copy of the new DJ single of "Be Somebody" today, which includes a remix, and I have to say it's really quite good. First, to Brian Chan... it wasn't me who outbid you at Ebay. I got my copy from another dealer who emailed me privately with an excellent offer. I know who the high bidder was, but he doesn't sub to the list. He's a nice kid, though, and we should really feel for him. He's never even been to a show where Paula was the headliner. He's only seen her one time and that was at H.O.R.D.E. at Wantagh Beach. :^( Anyway... yeah, the remix isn't bad at all. Bear in mind, It's not a club remix. It's just a radio remix. Someone named Jai Winding did the mix and Keith Wechsler did the engineering. The club mix has reportedly been done by Soul Solution and hasn't surfaced yet. The DJ single includes: 1. Remix Edit 4:18 2. Remix 4:47 3. Album Edit 4:28 If I am able to overlook the poorly written chorus and the bleeding heart sentiment at the end of the bridge, I can actually say that I really do like this song in it's remixed version. The work that Winding and Wechsler did on this cut goes a long way toward making this a better song. They found holes in Paula's production work and filled them expertly. The album version of "BS" (in particular, the musical arrangement of the verses) seems rather sparse and moody to me, which makes the more vocally intense chorus seem incongruous with the rest of what I perceive is intended to be a song of hopefulness. These guys managed to introduce additional instrumentation and volume control to the cut in such a way that the remix version gives us a more balanced production than is found in the version Paula produced. (You're going to like this one a lot, Scratch.) As you know, the album version opens simply with Paula's vocals over keyboard and soft electric guitar tracks, which give way to the soft echoing splashes of Jay's drum throughout the first verse. The remainder of the song is primarily a keyboard and lead vocal arrangement that uses background vocals and light bass work to fill it out somewhat. The remix, on the other hand, opens with Paula's vocals laid down over soft but prominent acoustic guitar work and a quieter version of the same keyboard track. At the beginning of the first verse, the acoustic guitar falls into the background and Paula's vocals, a splashing snare from Jay and some light bass work come in [the same is true for the second verse, as well]. This same sound is used right up through the "And oh my God what is this madness/I will not let it kill my gladness/And oh my God what is this madness/My joy inside will send this message" portion of the chorus. As soon as Paula launches into "I wanna be somebody...", the song gets punched up with an even more prominent acoustic guitar, louder background vocals and a quarter-note tambourine in addition to a continuation of the keyboards and bass. All of this works well in taking a little of the edge off the sharp tone of Paula's voice on the "I wanna be somebody" part. It's bring her vocals more in line with the rest of the sound you're hearing. The bridge is Paula's vocals, Jay's intermittent drumming, some bass work and light keyboards. The acoustic guitar comes in again for the closing portion of the song along with the keyboards, drums, bass and vocals. And, yeah... the Mariah warbles are still in here. In fact, I think they even tossed in an extra one between the end of the first chorus and the beginning of the second verse. Overall, this remix has more going on than the restrained album version and, as such, the transition from verse to chorus flows much more easily and gives the song the sound of fullness and hopefulness that I feel is missing in the album version. My strongest feeling from having listened to this remix a few times is that there's a lot more balance now between the vocals and the musical arrangement. Something about the album version seems top-heavy (or maybe bottom-heavy --- out of whack anyway). But, the overhaul makes the song sound really great. If this remix is what's going to radio, then maybe... just maybe... the single might stand a chance.
