For some reason, I have a renewed fascination for 'Suwanee Jo' and I can't get the song out of my head or stop playing it enough. Maybe I like it a lot more than anything else on Amen because it was written back in the Harbinger and This Fire days. And for school I have to read "Their Eyes Were Watching God" (the book which inspired 'Suwanee Jo') so I'm actually kind of excited to read the book. If anybody else has read the book and heard the song, let me know what you thought. Anybody else been hooked on a Paula ditty lately, too? - --Nate - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time. That's a great question. Odd that you should bring it up now because I've been hooked on "Bethlehem" lately. Up until the past few weeks, I had never really thought much about that song one way or the other. Now, I've been playing it a lot for the past month or so. I've found it's a great song to sing. There's a lot going on there vocally, but it's subtle stuff and it makes you work on controlling your breathing. So, yeah, that's been my recent addiction. >>For some reason, I have a renewed fascination for 'Suwanee Jo' and I can't >>get the song out of my head or stop playing it enough. Maybe I like it a >>lot more than anything else on Amen because it was written back in the >>Harbinger and This Fire days. I went through the "Suwannee Jo" addiction a year or so ago. The original version, naturally. That's another one that's a lot of fun to sing. I don't enjoy the version on Amen. quite as much. My favorite is the live version on the Road to Baden Baden bootleg. Paula's just ragin' on that cut. >>And for school I have to read "Their Eyes Were Watching God" (the book >>which inspired 'Suwanee Jo') so I'm actually kind of excited >>to read the book. If anybody else has read the book and heard the song, >>let me know what you thought. I read the book a few years ago after having heard Paula talk about the part it played in inspiring her to pen "Suwannee Jo." It's an excellent book and I'd definitely recommend it. I have to say that I still don't see a glaring example of the book's main character, Janie, in any of the women Paula sings about in "SJ", but I can see where the personality of Janie could have inspired Paula to sing those vignettes about women who are living their own particular kinds of reality. Truthfully, I've always seen a lot more of Janie in "Dear Gertrude." I once read an online chat where, in addition to the "SJ" inspiration, Paula also mentioned a connection between "Dear Gertrude" and "Their Eyes Were Watching God," but since that time I've not heard her associate the two again. After you've finished reading the book, I'd love to know if you see a similar connection between Janie and Gertrude.
