Here's the rundown: 1. Be Somebody (Album Edit) Not much was edited for the radio version. From what I can tell at first listen, it appears that they might have chopped a portion of the chorus that follows the bridge, but that's all. Everything else seems to be intact - Mariah dolphin calls, T-Boz murmurs, etc. 2. I Am So Ordinary (live) This isn't from the Bowery Ballroom show. It's from the Beacon Theatre show back in April 1998. You'll find the same recording on the Australian 2CD version of Amen. Honestly beautiful in either format. 3. Pearl (live) [This one IS from the Bowery Ballroom show - 10/99] Quite nice. The work Doug does at the beginning with that wicked bass of his just bubbling and zinging is so damned cool! Paula's voice sounds pretty good, too. I've heard her do a better job with "Pearl," but this was only the first or second show on industry show portion of the tour so I'm not surprised that she sounds the slightest bit little shaky on the choruses. I'd like to think there might be a better live version at some point in the future, but this'll do for now. 4. Be Somebody (live) [live from Pittsburgh - 12/99] And then, remaining true to her ability to surprise the hell out of me, she turns around and makes me eat at least a portion of my words about "Be Somebody." I still can't stomach the rhyme scheme and lyrical triteness of the chorus when I think about it, but that girl sang the hell out of this song in Pittsburgh!! She does such an amazing job in the live version that I can't help but just let my problems with the chorus lyrics float out of my head and focus on her beautiful voice. It's so clear, smooth, strong, controlled and confident. She went out there and sold it when she did this performance. You can really hear the passion and emotion coming from inside her. And, you were right, Steven... she makes up in live version for the sins she committed in the production work she did to the chorus in the studio version. Also in the live version, she goes off on lyrical and vocal variations at a few different points in the song, throwing in her own adlib intonations that make this one of the most special live cuts I've heard from Paula. I'm still not a fan of the album version, but I could listen to this live version a lot. My guess (and it's only a guess) is that the live version of "Be Somebody" is probably slated to appear on the commercially released single for the song - that is, if it ever gets released. That being the case, it might be worth waiting for the single to be released. However, one should bear in mind that we all expected that "Me" would be released as a single since it made it radio and video and that never happened. This "bonfires" promo CD is unquestionably worth buying if you know you don't want to take a chance on missing out on the live cut of "Be Somebody." The rest of it isn't that big of a deal. The "Be Somebody" album edit isn't that much different than the album cut. You can get this version of "Ordinary" live from the Oz release of Amen. "Pearl" live is nice, but not stellar. It's up to you and whether or not you can snag one of the few copies that are showing up on ebay. If it helps to know, I'm not suffering from buyer's remorse. I heard that over the weekend. Although WOMAD is a great music festival, full of great world music, I really don't get to enjoy Paula's performance as much when she plays outdoor venues; especially during the day time. I've always preferred her intimate performances in smaller clubs and beautiful old theatres. I'm actually really bummed that her tour ends after Japan and that she didn't even touch the Northwest. She used to come here all the time. I guess this means that I won't be getting to see her in the atmosphere that I would like for quite some time. Of course, I was going to fly out to the HOB show in Myrtle Beach, but I had to cancel at the last minute due to a fire in my apt.
