I have heard that they are "rethinking" the decision to have "Be Somebody" be the next single. I wonder what they would do instead? I'd be in favor of "Pearl" esp. the new version that she's doing live. They've already made a video for BS, so I don't know about the reality of changing at this point. I'll try to attach the review of Boston show by one of her early, big fans, the excellent BOSTON GLOBE music critic, Steve Morse, since I haven't seen anyone else posting it. [Boston Globe Online: Print it!] THIS STORY HAS BEEN FORMATTED FOR EASY PRINTING ------------------------------------------------------------------------ MUSIC REVIEW Paula Cole turns in splendid performance at Avalon By Steve Morse, Globe Staff, 3/17/2000 These are harrowing times for Paula Cole, the Rockport native who was on top of the world two years ago. She won the Grammy for best new artist that year, beating out Fiona Apple, Puff Daddy, Erykah Badu, and Hanson. Cole's album, ''This Fire,'' sold 2 million copies, and life appeared to be golden. But then Cole dared to make a followup album, ''Amen,'' which boldly expressed her ecumenical spirituality, yet ran counter to the hopeless fluff of most radio hitmakers in the last year. Cole's album scared off programmers and wasn't helped by the fact that a video for the first single, ''I Believe in Love,'' was 21/2 months late getting made. Cole is now fighting for her musical survival. She drew only a two-thirds house to the 2,000-capacity Avalon on Wednesday (and that's being generous), but she performed splendidly, betraying no hint of frustration. Hopefully, the album can be revived, since a new single, ''Be Somebody,'' comes out shortly - this time with a video. If there's any justice (and if radio will play anything but teen queens), Cole will be back in the public eye, because her extraordinary talent demands it. At Avalon, she sang with an urgent, irrepressible excitement. She opened, perhaps weirdly, with her cover of Dolly Parton's ''Jolene,'' but then hit the soulful ''Amen'' (a plea for social unity), the rocking ''Throwing Stones,'' and the passionate ''Pearl,'' in which she soaringly proclaimed, ''I've got to face my steppenwolf.'' The crowd was hers from then on. Dressed in a sexy tight dress with a slit up the thigh, Cole stayed out front most of the night, rather than hiding at the piano, as she often used to do. She played some piano, some guitar, and occasionally took a mallet and whaled on Jay Bellarose's bass drum. She moved like a cat, sang with striking grace, gestured effectively (throwing her fist in the air to accent ''Amen''), stretched vocally on the sultry ''Feelin' Love,'' and stirred the crowd with the hits, ''Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?'' and ''I Don't Want to Wait'' (the theme from ''Dawson's Creek''), which helped earn her seven Grammy nominations in 1998. She also let her band shine, especially guitarist Kevin Barry, giving him more solo space than usual. And on bass was Doug Wimbush, formerly of Living Colour, who added a solid funk edge to an already high-energy night. ''We're a very hard-working touring band,'' Cole told the carried-away crowd. ''We'll come back and I want to see you all again.'' Amen. Just got back from Pittsburgh, and I have to say, if you miss this Zeppelin cover, well, I feel sorry for you!!! Abso-fucking-lutely INCREDIBLE!!!! She absolutely blew me and Tina away!!!!!! Words cannot even begin to do her justice. So, call in sick, quit your job, hitchhike, take Hellhound (Greyhound), do what you have to do, but get to a show before they stop doing this song!!! (I am not actually suggesting quitting and/or hitchhiking--just trying to emphasize a point, here!) Here's the setlist: Jolene Amen Throwing Stones Pearl Mississippi I Believe In Love Tiger WHATCG Me God Is Watching Carmen Black Dog IDWTW By the way, I sort of knew the Led Zeppeling song by "ah ah ah ah ahhhhhhh", but it left me racking my brain trying to remember how the song actually started or any of the words at all, for that matter, so here's how it starts: "Hey hey mama, said the way you move, gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove". And she really DOES give Robert Plant a run for his money! I am surprised and dismayed at the lack of Harbinger songs. Personally I could go without hearing Cowboys or IDWTW live ever again, but when you've seen it as many times as we have, it just gets tiresome when over and over again, they're the only songs people actually know by her. I think she should at least do IDWTW earlier in the set instead of closing with it. I think she should close with God Is Watching since it's way more powerful (than IDWTW) live, and would probably boost sales of Amen since it would be fresh in people's minds that don't already own all of her music. Closing with anything from Amen would be better, but that's just our opinion. We will be in Toledo, Detroit (Pontiac), Chicago and Milwaukee if anyone is interested in meeting.
