It's very odd. It seems like Be Somebody shows up on every set list, but she never does it. It's usually set for the third encore. This has been going on now since the New Year's Eve show. I think the only times I heard her do the song were at the Bowery Ballroom show and the private show she did at China Club, both in NYC. Otherwise, she's skipping it. > > I'm not complaining. It's a weak song and I'd much rather hear her do something else, like the newly remodeled Throwing Stones she swung around at the Taj show or even a cool cover tune like the Zep tune Jimmy Mac told us about. It IS weird, though. At the Taj show, she had a huge audience that consisted mostly of people who were only at the show because they got comp tickets for staying/gambling at the casino. They didn't know Paula Cole from a hole in the wall. Perfect opportunity to sing Be Somebody so that it could stick in their heads and, hopefully, coax a few bucks out of their pockets to buy her CD out in the lobby. Instead she passed over it and sang IDWTW. Go figure. It doesn't seem she's doing a lot these days that makes sense at first flush. > > >> Or that she isn't doing La Tonya which allows that glorious gospel wail > >> live? > > Yeah... now the absence of this song in her set list is makin' me sad. The only thing I can think of is that her throat can't handle that wail every night. I'm pretty certain she only did La Tonya during the industry shows. Too bad. It's one of the better songs from the album. > > >> A while ago Kenn mentioned that Pearl had a different live arrangement > >> with some cool bass stuff. (thank God! where would we go without a car?) we saw each member of the band do a separate soundcheck and then the check with everyone together, including the elusive "black dog" she played it twice during check and her voice on that song rivals robert plant's. watch out led zep! she also checked carmen, pearl, and throwing stones. the whole band and crew are very thorough with the sound and work vigorously to put together the high quality shows we get to attend. i was so impressed with everything. so a little while later doors opened and tradewinds started filling up and my friend and i took a place against the stage (right in front of jay) and just to the right of kevin. the doors opened at 8pm, and peter stuart was set to go on at 10:30pm and paula aty 11:30, but fortunately things got underway about 40minutes eariler than that. i was concerned though because the last train back to nyc was at 11:30pm (and we were a ways from the station) and the next train wasn't until 5:50am the next morning. but sacrifice any paula songs to catch a train? hell no. so before any acts came on i wanted to see if i could find Kenn, i convinced myself that he would've been in attendance, but i don't think you were there. i don't know what you look like, but tradewinds is in the vicinty of your paula radius. so i kinda was saying out loud "gee i wonder if haringer list people are here like so and so" but no one stepped up to the plate. you know we need a paula convention or something to meet everyone! peter stuart came on and did his thing, it was his last paula show, and they're really gonna' miss him. he put on a cool performance. jay and kevin played a song with him, and anything that brings jay on stage longer is all good :) at about 11pm paula hit the stage. she opened with jolene, it was just her, jay and kevin. awesome, she walked right on stage and blew me away. she looked really beautiful, and it being against the stage and so close amplifies a concert experience. after jolene she went into amen then throwing stones... the whole set list was (not all in order) jolene, amen, throwing stones, pearl, mississippi, tiger, cowboys, i believe in love, black dog, carmen, me, feelin' love (kevin performed a breath-taking solo!), God is Watching and she ended with I Don't Want to Wait. she was in a really good and playful mood :) i noticed that "be somebody" was on the setlist, but she didn't play it. i'm just guessing here, but maybe she excludes it because it might not flow with the tempo of the show that evening? i dunno, i'm sure xomeone will enlighten us soon... the show ended at 12:30am, afterward i chatted with jay for a few minutes and got another photo... he's amazing at what he does and his aura, i gush i can't put it into words... but a couple of weeks ago on the web i stumbled across a website that someone made for matt chamberlin (and it's the only website he has that a fan constructed for him) and if he has a site, then jay should have a site too. he deserves one. i told him that i would try to figure one out, and although i'm a computer moron, i have an abbreviated little site set up at http://members.tripod.com/jaybellerose/ go check it out and give me tips and tell me how to do stuff, because i'm learning as i go. i also picked up the modern drummer magazine with him featured in it... good stuff, i'm going to learn how to scan and attach it along with some other stuff. so after that conversation and a few other words my friend and i took a cab to a diner and stayed there til' it closed (3:30am) then we walked around rural new jersey for an hour searching for the train station... it was a little spooky. to keep warm until 5:50am we stood inside a 24 hour mart (the only thing open for miles) and watched the happenings there for about 2 hours... it was like a scene from clerks... so 5:50am rolled around and my friend and i took the train back to nyc. i had to run off and do things all day, so i haven't slept in about 45 hours. but for paula, it was completely worth it!!! thanks for reading this long story but i hope it's at least interesting, april - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time.
