Show review Delete now if you don't want to ruin a BIG surprise in Paula's latest set list. Toad's Place last night received an amazing performance from Paula and the band, a homecoming for CT's own Doug Wimblish (sp?), the outstanding bassist. I don't have much time for a review, other than to say that Paula was in TOP form, her voice was as rich and full as I can remember. It was my 18th show, and I can't remember seeing her have this much fun. Set List (rough): JOLENE (works great as the opener) (just the trio) AMEN THROWING STONES (paula on baby grand) PEARL (WOW! Newly developed opening intro guitar/bass jam) MISSISSIPPI I BELIEVE IN LOVE TIGER ME GOD IS WATCHING WHERE HAVE ALL THE COWBOYS GONE? 1st encore CARMEN FEELIN' LOVE (extended Kevin/Paula solos, the longest I've heard) ********* BLACK DOG (the Led Zeppelin classic) ********* 2nd encore I DON'T WANT TO WAIT I spoke with Jay after the show, it was the first time they'd played the Zeppelin tune live. I thought so, since A) Paula had the lyrics taped to the stage, and B) during the first "ah ah ah ah ahhhhhhh" (those who know the song know what I'm talking about), Jay had to help Paula with the timing/syncopation. Hopefully they'll continue to play it, Paula's voice makes Robert Plant sound like Pee Wee Herman. I was surprised to see ZERO Harbinger songs, but I guess I shouldn't be. Enjoy! Kara & Tina Yes Tampa was a great show. Remember meeting me there? I suppose Paula likes having the audience quite ? To a certain point though. Does anybody have any comments on this? Does she like it quite? I would think it would be so she can hear herself sing. (Who Knows though) ( Paula at least mentioned that after the show) Which i don't think happens alot playing at these small venues where everybody just gets drunk and lets loose. But wouldn't you want a rowdy crowd as well? Anybody have any insight on this? Does anyone else think it's odd that Paula is dropping BE SOMEBODY from her live shows if it is supposed to be the followup single that she is promoting? Or that she isn't doing La Tonya which allows that glorious gospel wail live? Hate to say it, but I'm glad she isn't opening with Rhthym of Life anymore. I think it's a pretty good song, but not good enough to start a show with or spend 15 minutes jamming in a 90 minute show. Fun to hear she opened with Jolene. What a great way to start. A while ago Kenn mentioned that Pearl had a different live arrangement with some cool bass stuff. Did the keyboard player add harmony vocals? If so, how was she? I would love for Paula to get backup singers for some great live harmonies. What's really strange is that Be Somebody has been on every set list for all the shows I've seen so far on this part of the tour. She did play Be Somebody in Pittsburgh back in December at the Jingle Ball w/Melissa Etheridge and they did a great job at it, Rakia adds beautiful harmonies as well in LaTonya when they played that during the "promo" tour for the cd in Toronto and New York last year. I'm glad I'm not the only one that is baffeled by it. In fact I'll do my best to find out this weekend in Pittsburgh. If I get a chance to talk w/the band I'll ask them! Oh and since we were on the topic of Doug, another interesting tidbit is that Paula told me in Florida that he used to be in the band Living Color! He really is a nice guy and the things he can do with that bass...;) take care... tina - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time. My favorite Devil in Helsinki asked: >> Does anyone else think it's odd that Paula is dropping BE SOMEBODY >> from her live shows if it is supposed to be the followup single that she is >> promoting? Kara, Tina and I were talking after the show at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City about this. It's very odd. It seems like Be Somebody shows up on every set list, but she never does it. It's usually set for the third encore. This has been going on now since the New Year's Eve show. I think the only times I heard her do the song were at the Bowery Ballroom show and the private show she did at China Club, both in NYC. Otherwise, she's skipping it. I'm not complaining. It's a weak song and I'd much rather hear her do something else, like the newly remodeled Throwing Stones she swung around at the Taj show or even a cool cover tune like the Zep tune Jimmy Mac told us about. It IS weird, though. At the Taj show, she had a huge audience that consisted mostly of people who were only at the show because they got comp tickets for staying/gambling at the casino. They didn't know Paula Cole from a hole in the wall. Perfect opportunity to sing Be Somebody so that it could stick in their heads and, hopefully, coax a few bucks out of their pockets to buy her CD out in the lobby. Instead she passed over it and sang IDWTW. Go figure. It doesn't seem she's doing a lot these days that makes sense at first flush. >> Or that she isn't doing La Tonya which allows that glorious gospel wail >> live? Yeah... now the absence of this song in her set list is makin' me sad. The only thing I can think of is that her throat can't handle that wail every night. I'm pretty certain she only did La Tonya during the industry shows. Too bad. It's one of the better songs from the album. >> A while ago Kenn mentioned that Pearl had a different live arrangement >> with some cool bass stuff. Did the keyboard player add harmony vocals? >> If so, how was she? I would love for Paula to get backup singers for >> some great live harmonies. You'll know the answers to these questions and more very soon, my brother-in-Paula. More details to come in a private e-mail. Licking my wounds 'cuz Paula didn't do "Black Dog" in Atlantic City and I hate the New Haven crowd too much to go back to Toad's Place and I'm still too sick with the flu to even think about schlepping to Pittsburgh on the outside chance that she does it again and it'll probably end up being just like the cover of Marley's "War" that I never got to hear either (bitch, bitch, moan, moan) .... Well, at least that gives us an idea of where she's heading. In my mind, that means she's up there with Annie Lennox and George Michael. Two white kids who sing with a whole lotta soul. If that's what she has in mind, I'm definitely along for the ride. She also says that it will take 5 albums for people to really understand her style. Well, we're already at album #3 and you know one of the 5 will have to be a jazz album. With Amen sucking wind, I can't see them going for #4 being a jazz venture. Does that mean #5 will take her back to her musical roots? That'd be very cool. I'll transcribe the article when I get a chance for you all to read. I also just finished reading another article where she lets Carter (her former manager) have it in a brief barbed comment about his part during the first part of the Amen. release. Ouch.
