Just to add my 2 cents to Kelly's review of the absolutely awesome Boston show. I completely agree that it is the best Paula and the band have ever been, and I also have seen Paula perform many times since the beginning. A friend who was at the show in Washington DC this week and at this show last night said she was great in DC, but even better in Boston. I am constantly amazed at how she just keeps getting better. I thought she was incredible the last time I saw her around here at the Hampton Beach Casino with the Bob Marley tribute, the dancing, her voice. But she has brought it up another notch- the voice-so pure, yet varied in depth, the scatting, the throaty sounds, the range. The band was as good as I have ever seen them. This was the first time that I have seen Doug Wimbush and he was terrific- fits really well, good chemistry with this band. Kevin Barry, also a hometown Boston boy, was the best I've ever seen him. He did an incredible solo on Feelin' Love with Paula on keyboards. Jay Belerose- what can I say? Paula R. you did miss it, absolutely at the top of his form. The whole band is so tight, so in control. Paula's dancing has reached new heights. She puts on such an incredible live show that people who only know her recorded music can't imagine. I was very looking forward to this show because I have not seen her do the AMEN songs live before- except Free and Suwannee Jo. (Kelly, she also did "God is Watching", didn't she?). I adore THIS FIRE so was thrilled that she did 8 songs from it - the best. I was disappointed that she did little from "Harbinger" (I think only Hitler's Brothers) and would have liked more from Amen, because seeing her do the songs live definitely adds something to them for me. I love "Pearl," perhaps my favorite song from AMEN, and her rendition last night was unbelievable. But the problem is I wouldn't have wanted her to drop any of the songs she did do- and they were on for a solid 90 minutes with no break. Paula did one song on piano - forget which, from TF. I was afraid I would miss her on keyboards and piano now that she has Rakiya Diggs, instead this additional constant beat really added depth to the band and freed Paula up to do more with her voice and her dancing on all the songs. I think this is one of the reasons that This Fire songs like Mississippi and Tiger, etc. never sounded so good. Whatever any of you do, if you have the chance catch this show. I felt the same way last night, Judy, at 6 o'clock I was home thinking I don't really need to drive an hour on a week night, get home at 1am and up for work at 6am, but I don't think it's age- a friend 20 years younger bowed out for that very reason- but she's sorry now and I saw the greatest show of all time- it doesn't get any better than this! You missed "God is Watching", but otherwise I think you got 'em all. I don't remember the order of all the songs either, just that the first four were "Jolene", "Amen", "Throwing Stones", and "Pearl", the last one in the regular set was "God is Watching", the first encore was "Carmen" (I never in a million years expected her to sing that one! - it's one of my favorites), "Feelin' Love", and "Hitler's Brothers", and the final encore was IDWTW. I thought the show was great, even though I was dead tired (and still am). Well worth a trip to Boston! I was a bit farther back than Kelly, but up on the side a bit so I had a clear view of the stage. I had only seen Paula once before (not too long after "This Fire" came out, I think), also in a club. That time I had barely heard of her and only knew the big three from "This Fire". This time, well, I knew all the songs. :) - -- Stina Bridgeman --- ssb@cs.brown.edu --- http://www.cs.brown.edu/~ssb/ - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "But this...this, this, *this* is like being *nibbled* to death by...what are those Earth creatures called?
