[Bandera199@aol.com] (harbinger) Paula & Sarah Live [Brian C ] (harbinger) Opening Act ["K.C." ] Re: (harbinger) Opening Act [April Dunetz ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2000 10:58:11 +0200 From: steven.stewart@nokia.com Subject: (harbinger) remix My problem with most remixes is that they kill the song by putting in a generic drum beat. I'm afraid that remixes will take out Jay's brilliant drumwork which really fills a lot of Paula's songs with additional texture and weight. If they are going to release BE SOMEBODY as a single, I wish Paula would add additional harmonies on the chorus. Right now, her voice is processed to sound thin and almost whiney in the chorus rather than strong and resolute to not let the evil in the world destroy her faith in her power to make a difference in the world. I am probably in the minority, but I actually like the song...I'm not familiar with BoneThugsnHarmony that Kenn mentioned popularized that singing style, so the verses melody and drum beats really work for me. I think a few of the lyrics are a little weak, but the message is fine and it is an enjoyable listen for me. But I think that the TBoz guest appearance was underutilized. I don't know why she didn't also sing harmonies on the chorus or bridge to make the sound a little richer. Again, her contribution is pathetically weak sounding when it should be (according to the lyrics and message of the song) full of life and affirmation of love, hope, and belief. I don't hate her voice...I just think it's wasted. Maybe this is generic and a little cheesey, but wouldn't a soulful gospel choir sound better on that part? Maybe have Paula sing alone on the first chorus, have her message affect a few to have additional voices and harmonies on the second chorus, and have their influence add a choir for the third chorus. Though I hate Missy Elliott's awful and unimaginative rhymes in Feelin Love, her harmonies are lush and exquisite...really focusing the song and making it stand up and shine. Oh, well. Since none of Paula's people seem to read this forum, I guess I'm just wishing in thin air. I still haven't heard the IBIL remixes, but from what you all have said about it, the rerecording of the vocals and diva shouts really make it a treat. I'm still floored that IBIL wasn't a monster hit. It is one of my all time fave paula songs for it's amazing production and groove. The more I listen to it, the more brilliant I think it is. I've heard it many times here in Finland and heard it in a few stores when I went to America for Christmas. What happened? Hey everyone... I'm a newbie here... and so glad I found this list! I have been a Paula fan since Harbinger first came out... I discovered her when she dropped by the local AAA station to play "I Am So Ordinary" live one day. I had never heard of her, but she hooked me... and my respect for her has grown as I've gotten to know her music better through the years. I respect Paula because she isn't afraid to take risks... that girl just blows be away with her amazing creativity (I don't know any other female "pop" artist that would beat-box or whistle in the middle of a song) and her boldness. Paula is one of the few true artists out there today. As far as her new album goes, I know many of her fans are really disappointed, and I'm certainly not addicted to it like I was "This Fire" (which didn't leave my CD player for months!), but I still think it's brilliant. There are some really good songs, but more importantly, it's really good to see an artist to whom the record company has given almost complete artistic freedom instead of pushing to do an album exactly like the last. Anyway, that's my twopence worth... I'm really glad to find you guys and am looking forward to getting to know you all. Subject: (harbinger) Opening Act Apparently no one who attended the New Orleans or Talahassee shows subs to the list because I haven't seen any reviews. According to one of my sources, singer/songwriter Peter Stuart (formerly of Dog's Eye View and former roadie for Counting Crows) is currently on tour with Paula. Here are the dates where Stuart will open for PC: Feb 25: Church Street Market - Orlando, Florida Feb 26: Tampa Performing Arts Center - Tampa, Florida Feb 27: Carefree Theater - W. Palm Beach, Florida Mar 1: Bijou Theater - Knoxville, TN Mar 2: Be Here Now - Asheville, NC Mar 3: House Of Blues - N. Myrtle Beach, SC Mar 4: Roxy Theater - Atlanta, GA Mar 7: The Attic - Greenville, NC Mar 8: Tremont Music Hall - Charlotte, NC Mar 9: Cat's Cradle - Carrboro, NC Mar 11: Xanadu Theater at Trump Taj Mahal - Atlantic City, NJ Mar 12: 9:30 Club - Washington, DC Mar 15: Avalon Ballroom - Boston, MA Mar 16: Toad's Place - New Haven, CT Mar 17: Tradewinds - Seabright, NJ I really don't know much about Dog's Eye View with the exception of "Everything Falls Apart" (which sounded too much like a Counting Crows song for my taste) and a cover tune they did for the Sweet Relief II benefit CD (they covered Vic Chestnutt's "Dodge" and almost did a better job with it than Vic did). Hassan Hakmoun and his band opened for Paula when she performed here in NYC at the Bowery Ballroom a few months back. Too bad we can't hear more from him. I thought he put on a cool show. Of course, I don't know if the deep south is really ready for Moroccan Gnoua trance music. The NYC crowd wasn't even really dealing with it too well ('course it was all Top-40 industry schlubs at that one so that's not too surprising). Wonder what happened to Donna DeLory as the opener?? Didn't someone say she was supposed to have that spot? Maybe she's just waiting til the tour moves out west.
