I recently discovered Brazilian singer Elis Regina. Is she great or what?!?!? Hear my new favorite song here (She's singin' with Antonio Carlos "Tom" Jobim...): It's 'Aguas de Marco' ("Waters of March") from "Verve Jazz Masters: The Bossa Nova Story"c.1994. www.spluffkatunga.com/waters.mp3 For those that don't know her, look her up on this here dubbya-dubbya-dubbya. I thought, you know--Since she's a chick singer and all, this post'd be okay.... It is just so emotional, and so seemingly personal, I would love to see that live. I asked her to sing it once, I got "Saturn Girl" instead:) But that was cool, I swiped the set list with that on it, and got her to sign it. I think that is my favorite piece of Paula memorabilia. Anyway, that is my request, amy - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time. "Manitoba." It's one of the songs she never released, but I've heard a live recording of this song and it makes me wish I could have been there at Fez Under Time to hear it live and in person. Maybe someday she'll give it another listen, realize what a great song it is and start performing it again. That voice!! Why doesn't she ever play that song? i would love to hear >> it live! Paula says that she doesn't perform "Nietszche's Eyes" live because it takes so much out of her emotionally. I'm sure that's the main reason, but it also must take a lot out of her vocally. I can't see her ever doing that one on a regular basis on tour. I can't imagine how she could sing ""Nietszche's Eyes" on a tour where she'd be singing it day after day? The wear and tear on her vocal chords would probably blow her voice out pretty quickly. It's really too bad, though. What a soul-purging song to hear come out of her! I've only heard her perform this song live twice and both those performances were at the taping of Sessions at West 54th - once at sound check and once during the taping. The live version I heard her do as sound check was so emotionally jarring that it left me a little shaken myself, with tears in my eyes. The West 54th sound check private mini-concert goes down in my book as my most unforgettable Paula Cole moment. Phil had invited me to come to the sound check and I turned out to be the only fan there. I was just hanging out watching what was going on for all the set-up. Paula came out to her piano to go through sound check while ten or so roadies milled around setting up equipment. She ran through portions of a couple other songs, but I thought I'd scream when I heard her play the first few notes of "Nietszche's Eyes." I was afraid she'd only sing part of it, like she had the other songs, but she didn't stop. She just kept going and sang it all the way through. I'd never heard her sing it before and I've never heard her sing it again and there she was singing it just for me. Well, y'know, it felt that way anyway and I'll never forget it. Sadly, the performance was never aired. Instead, we got to see "Suwannee Jo," "Carmen" (w/ Holly Palmer), "Me" and "I Don't Want To Wait." But, I know Steve Honoku was there for the taping, too, so he can probably attest to the beauty of "Nietszche's Eyes" live. Steve? She died sometime in the early 80's, I think (problems with drugs and alcohol). She's regarded as one of the greatest bossa nova singers, and "Aguas de Marco" is a masterpiece, especially how Jobim and she trade phrases of diminishing length. I have a CD with Jobim performing an English-language version; while it isn't as melodious as the duet in Portugese with Elis Regina, at least you get a translation of the clever lyrics (e.g. "It's the rest of a stump/It's a cold/It's the mumps). BTW, if you like Elis Regina, you should also hear Gal Costa, who (fortunately) is still alive and active.
