The album is titled "Brief Strop" I bought the album while in NYC, and at first I wasn't too enthusiastic about it, but I kept listening to it, and I love it now. She's a british singer who in a way is like Ani Difranco or Emm Gryner. She started her own label called "Essexgirl Records" I read a bio on her at her website www.sheilanicholls.com and her story was interesting. She seems very intelligent, and really just writes music not for money but for herself, and for others. She said she started the indie label because of how big labels put barriers on what singers can do or sing about or release, so she made her own label. She sounds like a mix of Chantal/Fiona/Rebekah and a touch of bjork, and she sounds unique. She's mellow but really not..like she has some blatant lines in her songs, and intelligent lyrics. She's really great, and since a lot of you are on the lookout for new women singers, I really suggest giving this album a try. If you'd like to hear some clips go to her website, and click on the music section. Her album came out in mid November, so she's fairly new. Thanks muchly, and please tell me what you think, if you hear her or get the album. steve - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time. Allegedly this version has 15 tracks rather than the 13 tracks on the Aussie release most of us ended up getting. The sketchy pre-release information leads me to believe that this version never hit the shelves as it was supposed to at the end of October. Also, it appears that the next single from the album will be the title track. Advance DJ copies of the single are already showing up at auction. Is this not the case in other places like NY, and elsewhere? I listened straight through about three times in a row, then a couple more times "as the mood struck". But the mood didn't strike much. I was put on fire with This Fire. I listened to it, felt it, ached with it, repeatedly, hour after hour, as I drove over many days throughout Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and Idaho, having just become acquainted with/addicted to Paula at the Park City, Utah, Lilith Fair in August 1998. I've posted this before, but my experience with This Fire as I journeyed throughout that incredibly scenic part of our country, was beyond the beyond. I shared my Paula discovery with friends and family upon my return home. None shared my enthusiasm. None felt the passion or pain or triumph. They only heard weirdness, extremism. And I remained faithful and unmoved by their criticism. I bought Harbinger, and listen to it again and again as I drive. Tamer, kinder, less raw... it didn't wrench or submerge me, but it is easy to listen to, and one I could recommend to friends as a sort of "intro" to Paula. And then, Amen. Frankly, I am disappointed. Is it because I am at a different place in my own life? Is it because Paula has moved to a different place? I wondered. Then, I bought the IBIL single, with "Night" on it. Amen does not, but Night has it! Night is in the spirit of the This Fire collection. What is it? Passion, rawness, angst, honesty, a cutting-almost-hurting depth to her vocals... I actually first listened to it through earphones at my work (I work for the State of Oregon in an open cubicle), and I had to stop and close my eyes to hold back that welling, that swelling, that This Fire had earlier inspired. I can listen over and over and over, and I am moved afresh each time. Meanwhile, I (thank you Steven!) had opportunity to listen to a live recording of "Ordinary" and had the same reaction at home. I can hear it again and again, and never grow weary of its poignancy and sorrow. The words sometimes strike me as simplistic, but the presentation cuts to my core. Paula has it. Amen does not. I will wait to see her live when she visits Oregon... and I will hope someday that another recorded collection can come close to capturing what makes her so incredible live. So far, This Fire is the only CD (and Night, the only single) that set me on fire, make me cry. They do, though, and I haven't lost faith that she will cut loose once again.
