Take Nov. 30 for instance. That's the night Cole will play a benefit for hand gun control for the Center To Prevent Handgun Violence at the legendary Pickfair Estates in Los Angeles, a stately mansion that was once home to the first superstars of the big screen, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. The call for tighter gun control is one that Cole certainly feels an affinity for. "I'm blessed to be doing what I do and to get to visit other countries and see other cultures," Cole tells allstar. "America is just so violent. You see that when you leave it. It's just such a problem now," she continues. "I understand that it is in the constitution because they never wanted the government to be too powerful. They wanted the ordinary citizen to have the ability to revolutionize the government and that's a really noble principle. But, wow, things have gone awry." Cole was asked to play the benefit because the lyrics to her new single "Be Somebody" fit the cause. "I didn't think of it when I wrote it," Cole says, "but it works out to be a perfect gun control song." The lyrics to the song will also be printed on the program for the event, which will be hosted by Whoopi Goldberg. The most unusual aspect of the event for Cole, is that none other than President Bill Clinton will introduce her 20-minute set. "It will certainly be an interesting situation for me," she says. "Clinton is going to make a speech after 'Be Somebody.' After that I'll be singing a song where his name is actually in the lyric. [The album's title track, "Amen."] That's probably the only thing I'm nervous about, how I'll respond to that. But I think it will be funny." Having the leader of the free world introduce her set doesn't faze this seven time Grammy nominee, who has notched up such hits as "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone?" and "I Don't Want To Wait." "I usually get a little bit of nerves before almost every show," says Cole. "But I've been able to meet a lot of famous people, after a while that tends to fade away, all the idolatry, and you start to see them as human beings. You look into their eyes and see if they are kind or not. That's what matters most to me when I meet someone, the kindness in their eyes." Wonder what she'll make of those most famous, smiling Irish peepers? - -- Linda Laban - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time.
