I never thought that Paula was "selling herself"...and least of all as "a nouveau preacher". If you can't understand that she puts her innermost feelings into what she writes, and at this point in her life is going through some amazing evolution to the spiritual, and is SHARING that with us....(and how lucky are we!), ..well that is just sad. I truly don't think any artist on the market today is PREACHING to us....and I feel sad for you that you can't enjoy the evolutionary process of her music. Please stay away from her show on New Years Eve, and let those who can enjoy participate. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time. That's cool. Cleanliness is next to Godliness and, as Paula tells us, God is watching so we don't want to get caught unbathed and wearing ugly shoes if The Big Cheese is checking us out that closely. ;) >> What I find ridiculous is the notion that somehow the clothes you are >> wearing make you more eligible to watch someone peform. These kinds of >> clubs do not exist so that we will all find a sense of style, they exist to exclude >> those who do not meet some abstract standard. I find that kind of mentality >> contradictory to Paula's music. In my office, I have to wear a boring shirt and tie. Given the option, I'd never wear that kind of thing, but I do it because I want to keep the job and make money. I don't see a dress code at a club as being any different. They have something I want and part of the deal for me to get in the door to see what they have is that I have to wear what they want me to wear. It's just clothing. It doesn't matter to me and I doubt it matters to Paula, but apparently it matters to the club owner. I recall hearing from someone on the list some time ago that Paula was performing a sold-out show once at Toad's Place up in New Haven, CT and she noticed that a bunch of fans were still standing outside, standing in the rain or snow (I forget which it was) watching the show through the windows. When she saw that they were all standing there trying to hear her perform from outside, through the windows, she told the club manager to get them in out of the elements so they could see the show comfortably. I don't think she cared then what those people were wearing and I doubt she'd care now. I think she just wants to perform on New Year's Eve and Life happens to be where she chose to do it. >> And when she is selling herself as some kind of nouveau preacher, I >> think an old phrase is appropriate, practice what you preach. Paula has not been promoting herself as a pop evangelist. And, don't be mistaken, she does do quite a lot of practicing what she preaches. A couple of years ago, she sacrificed her own Christmas to go perform for U.S. troops on the U.S.S. Washington in the Persian Gulf because they couldn't be home with their families. The soldiers were so thankful for her generosity they presented her with some kind of plaque. Paula contributes her time to non- profit causes like Zero Population Growth and Artists Against Racism. When Paula's former sound engineer/tour manager was falsely accused of rape, she stood by his side despite the fact that bad press of that kind (deserved or not) could have been crippling to her burgeoning career. Seems to me that tells a lot about the kind of integrity she possesses. >> Then I guess that means I should condemn you. I mean you are a >> sheeplike consumer running out to this concert, and buying into all of this >> Millenium bullshit. Condemn me if you like. Lump me in there with the rest of the cattle. But at least know that you've mistaken me for someone else before you do so. I'm going out on New Year's Eve as I always do. I go out to have fun with the people who matter most to me. I go out because another year has come to an end. This year, I'm also going out because it's the end of the 20th century. The Millenium doesn't come to end until next New Year's Eve. I'm going to Paula's concert because I love to hear her sing. I love to watch her perform. I like to talk to Jay. I first saw them when they opened for Barenaked Ladies at a New Year's Eve concert three years ago and I think it's great to see how far they've come so quickly. I'm going to go out to try to have a good time. >> This Millenium crap is a bigger gimmicky, hoaky, marketing ploy >> than the Macarena, Tickle Me Elmo and the Furby rolled together. Ah, we agree, at last. But, even though I think this whole thing is horribly overhyped, I'm still not planning to sit home that night, watching Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve. I want to go out. There'll be plenty of times in my old age when I will probably stay home. I want to be out and about this time. >> So feel free to go to the concert and enjoy yourself. Whatever happens >> though it will not be as good (even though I know you would never admit >> it) as the $10.00 shows Paula poured her heart into early in her career. The concert hasn't even taken place yet but you already know that it won't be as good as a concert she did five years ago? Unless you're Dionne Warwick, there's no way you can know that. I can't know that. Frankly, it's not a big concern. Last time I saw Paula, her voice sounded better than ever and I thoroughly enjoyed her performance - despite my strong dislike for a few of the songs she sang. She's still putting her all into the shows and I will be right there in the audience this time to give her another chance to remind me why I think she's so incredibly talented. I'll be sure to post my review, too. ;) Peace.
