I hope you have backstage passes that allow you access to the artists. I've been to two Bruce Hornsby shows, a friend of mine is in the band, and the backstage passes that we had only allowed us into a reception area, and nowhere near any of the performers ( that is unless the performer made it a point to come to that area). My friends and I met Paula last year following her Troubadour show in Los Angeles. She autographed some things for us, and was very nice. We felt really stupid though, because we had been involved in some sort of deep discussion, turned around and met Paula and instantly had nothing intelligent to say. I think I said something like "Thanks, you're such an inspiration", my wife said "we love you" and our other friend said something like "you rock!" Great conversation, considering we are all college teachers. One thing that was cool: I gave Paula a copy of my CD which is called "MY Little World". Paula looked at it and said "My Little World-what a great title!" So I was pretty happy about that. And now in our house we have the Paula shelf (or Paula shrine, which our friends call it), which has an autographed copy of the sheet music to IDWTW and and autographed copy of "Harbinger". I hope you have a chance to meet her. Especially after a great show like the Troubadour one was. She had such a great vibe and such great energy. Hello! On the subject of Paula's friendliness, how is she about fanmail? Does she read it all? Will she respond to any of it? If so, does she respond best if you send it to Warner Bros., her managment, or somehow on tour? I'd really like to send her something, but want to send it where she'd have the best chance of getting it, since I refuse to get my hopes up of her coming anywhere near me. :( She does seem like one of the sweetest people out there. And genuine. I think that's one thing about "Amen"...it may be preachy and sunshiny, but you know she means it, and that's what makes it likeable. That's just what I think though...has anyone had fanmail experiences w/ Ms. Cole? On an unrelated question, I assume she and Seyi are still together. Has anyone heard otherwise? If they plan to get married or anything? They make a cute couple. ;) Blessings, Erin >paula is sooooo sweet, even if she is not in the best of moods for on >reason or another she is still extremely courteous to her fans... her >staff is great too, her tour manager is usually with her wherever she is >and he's really cool and relaxed about letting people approach her... if >you ask paula questions she responds to you and she's incredibly down to >earth so if you see her anywhere around you'll have no problem... you're >really lucky you're seeing her! i got 3 shows in a week in nyc last month, >but i want more! - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time. Hello - Ok, now about Seyi, I heard she was dating someone ELSE right now.............not sure about quite what happened with her and Seyi....... About Paula reading fan mail..............I know that other lists (non-Paula related) and even THIS list have arranged for one person who is meeting Paula (for sure) to collect a bunch of emails from fans, put them in a nice book-type thingy and present them to Paula directly. I do know that if I got the chance to meet Paula again, I would definately arrange this and hand her a book full of notes/letters/emails to Paula from fans...........its a great idea and has been successful for other artists (Natalie Merchant & Alanis) - think about it. If someone is going to be meeting her and likes the idea, maybe we can arrange something. I think we did this for Paula's bday about 2 years ago?????? Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Nov 1999 10:14:15 +0200 From: steven.stewart@nokia.com Subject: (harbinger) Aussie Amen Review. Thanks to an Aussie Angel, I received their version of AMEN (no period in their title!) yesterday. I am overjoyed. I got the version with the extra CD. Though it says on the sticker that the album CD includes, IDWTW, it doesn't. The normal album is exactly the same as the states version except the graphics on the actual CD are just plain black with the track listing instead of the halo artwork. Sara B said there is a second CD with two bonus tracks included on the album, but it's not on this one. The extra CD...oh boy. If you like Paula's harmonies at the beginning of Pearl and The Ladder, you are gonna dig this in a big way. 1. IDWTW 99 version: Starts with Jay's drums with a gate reverb effect on them. Paula has completely rerecorded the song with new vocals. I was scared it would be boring or dumb with the verses out. It's not. The "Do do do's" come in with Paula singing the lead with a new harmony filled arrangement. The Chorus then starts with Paula singing the lyrics with an almost gospelish backup OH AHHH in the background. After the "...sorry" the harmonious "Do do dos" come back until the drums drop out for "so open up your morning light..." when the drums come back, a sweet acoustic guitar comes into the arrangement and the harmony "Do Do Dos" come back. Maybe this version is already gracing Dawson and his friends in the US...it's not on the show here. 2. FEELIN DA LOVE: Ugh. I REALLY hate this and I really like this. It has both elements for me. Miss Missy starts the song with "When I walk up in da club, dey watch me stroll. Hey, Mr. DJ do you got dat Paula Cole? Oh, I'm so sure its gon' rock. Give me peach schnapps and make sure its on da rocks. Now, I'm gonna drink til I'm drunk. An if you say please I'm gonna give you wachu want. Get on your knees like you bout to marry me, then open your mouth and let me see what you're about." AGH!!! Paula then starts singing deliciously over an understated bass and drum groove with an ANNOYING Missy yapping "say what?" "oh yeah" "uh huh" and a fake laugh throughout. BUT there is a redemption. This version has some absolutely CREAMY harmonies that just melt me. I don't know if Missy sings...if so, her voice is perfect with Paula's. I just have never understood the horrifying repetition of one or two phrases to make it "street." I get REALLY annoyed at that! After "the girl next door" Paula gives us a mini Jolene "GRR!" The Bridge is amazing with the harmonies and MMM MMM MMMing around. The end of the song has Missy yapping about touching THAT SPOT etc etc etc. I am so glad I didn't spend a ton on the Japanese release just to get this song. It is nice to have...it really has a lot of cool moments, but I just haven't learned to appreciate the rapping that doesn't seem to add anything to the song. Especially since the new live version is so hot at the end of this song...that doesn't show up. I would have much rather Paula redid this with the new arrangement and fantastic harmonies and drop the rap. But what does a snowy white Finn know about street cred anyway? 3. ORDINARY: It doesn't say where this is recorded. If you have never heard the piano version, you'll love this. If you are already familiar with the different live versions of this song, this one is just a little bit rushed and seems a little bit aggressive rather than vulnerable near the end. I still think the best versions are from the Troubador show (for some reason dropped from the HUSH CD?) and an acoustic guitar version from a now defunct radio station in LA. But this is still a really great recording...I am just nitpicking. It is definately a keeper and really wonderful. 4. NIGHT: I was expecting a sweet piano ballad. This isn't. But it is a quietly powerful song...It is amazing. I love it and am so glad to hear it will be on the maxi single in the states for you all to enjoy! It is (I think) in 6/8 time...starts with the piano running in triplets (I can't think of anything to compare it to...it almost sounds classical. VERY interesting.) I hate to even attempt the lyrics here since I can't make all of them out, but she seems to be discussing her battles of depression and womanhood. Here is an attempt. My womanhood is breaking up. All the shim (?) and anger buried under This path of life is (?)ruining all advice and following others footsteps on the way. I am still that little girl. Looking up my mother's skirt. I see her big dark mystery but get no answers just embarrassment and shame for asking. Go (?) on and on into depression Night is long. So in my own dark mystery. I feel the shame of generations' mothers There is a rage that cannot be explained, to be a woman is more like a thing. We never talk about it. And the world is hungry for it. I walk away from family and give myself away too easily I fall flat on my face. Go on depression. Night is long. Go through depression. Night is long. (cool harmonies start here) Darkness (?) naked Night is long. Can't go deeper than I've gone. Darkest before dawn. Night is long. I feel so close to the One... (Powerful release of vocals and strings come in.) Go on! Go on! GOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOON (string break) GO ON GO ON GO OOOOOOOOOON! (?) highest to the sky I just love this song. Hope that helps.
