The singer-songwriter and Lilith Fair vet says it's the product of study and investigation, which came after spending much of her life "as a cynical atheist." "When I was a child, I instinctively believed in God, but I grew up with parents that didn't believe, and we didn't go to church at all, and that was fine," says Cole, who came to a spiritual re-awakening after studying yoga and Buddhism and reading up on other religions and belief systems. "Eventually my heart just kind of took over and felt it. I started feeling things that were not explainable to me, or to anyone. And I realized it was God." Though she felt that her belief was "too new" to share on 1997's double-platinum This Fire, God is all over Amen. That's netted the album some fairly rancorous reviews, which she actually expected while she was writing the songs; one, "Rhythm of Life" even begins with the line "To the critics and the cynics who don't understand the lyrics; " "I knew the critics would lash out at me on this album," says the 30-year-old winner of the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1998. "I knew it ahead of time; I even talk about it in the lyrics. And they are. And I'm not as strong as I was hoping I would be, but I'm getting there." Cole who these days is dating world musician Hassan Hakmoun doesn't stand alone in the battle, however. Amen is credited to the Paula Cole Band, a nod to longtime cohorts Jay Bellerose on drums and Kevin Berry on guitar. With Doug Wimbush on bass and Rakiya Diggs on keyboards, violin, and vocals, they plan to play mostly promotional and radio shows for the balance of the year, with a European tour slated for the beginning of 2000 and North American shows to follow in the spring. Cole is also playing at the Allen Ginsburg Memorial Concert on Sunday [Oct. 17] in Ann Arbor, Mich. > Gary Graff - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time. Is that correct about >> who she is dating? Just curious. Now I'm not one to go 'round spreadin' rumors..... but, as I was leaving the China Club on Friday, I did see the two of them walking out together. Hassan and his band opened for Paula at the Bowery Ballroom concert, but there was no opener for the China Club show. I suppose being her new boyfriend would be a plausible explanation for why he was there. Guess maybe we shouldn't plan on seeing Paula's performance in Mr. Sonuga's "Don't Explain" any time soon. ;) >> Can't wait til Nov 9 to see if NIGHT is another b-side!!! Same here. >> Anyone have any ideas what the Dolly duet is from the BMI list of >> songs? Jay told me what the name of the song is when I was talking to him after the Bowery show, but, I think I've completely forgotten by this point. Something about the song "What Our Eyes Tell" rings a distinct bell, but don't hold me to it. In any event, it seems Paula really wanted to include the duet on Amen., but just didn't think it fit well with the mood of the rest of the album. Jay said that there is a strong possibility that it will go on an upcoming movie soundtrack. He also said that it's a really pretty song. Apparently Dolly provides harmonies on the cut. >> Also, still waiting for Kenn's review of the show he saw. Last I >> heard he was dead tired and writing when he woke up.
