The text is below: ~Holly Cole mines the depths of spirituality By Steve Morse, Globe Staff, 10/06/99 When last in the public eye, Paula Cole was a media magnet who starred at Lilith Fair and won best new artist at the Grammy awards. Her album, ''This Fire,'' sold in the millions, pushed by the novelty hit, ''Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?'' (a parody of macho lifestyles) and the exquisite pop of ''I Don't Want to Wait,'' the theme of the TV show ''Dawson's Creek.'' A different, more pensive Cole emerges, however, on her long-awaited follow-up album, ''Amen,'' now in stores. It doesn't have any novelty songs and doesn't genuflect to pop programmers. Believing that success is a ''platform and an opportunity,'' Cole has fashioned a beautifully contemplative, R&B/soul-accented record about love and spirituality. ''I was finally willing to discuss my spirituality in music. I was shy about that before,'' says Cole, who grew up on the North Shore in Rockport, before attending Berklee College of Music and earning seven Grammy nominations for her exceptional year in 1997. The new album is very influenced, she says, by Marvin Gaye's ''What's Going On'' record from 1971. His music from that era, likewise a dreamy pastiche of R&B styles, extended hope for the unity of all people and races. ''For me, God is an energy that bonds all life,'' says Cole, 31, who believes in no single denomination, but rather a more personal outlook in which ''you're meant to be your own Buddha and your own Jesus.'' The main ingredient is love. That's apparent from the opening track (and first single), ''I Believe in Love,'' which has a Whitney Houston-like grandeur in its orchestral arrangement and a dogged determination in its message: ''The clouds may come, the clouds may go, and I'll still be here ... I believe in love as the center of all things.'' ''I think it all boils down to love,'' adds Cole, who wrote and produced the album. ''If you look at Gandhi and at his life and teaching, or at Jesus or Buddha, it all comes down to love. You can't change the world with violence. You can't even change it with religion or conversion to religion. But you can change it with love. You can touch an individual on a daily basis, and you can touch the world in a lifetime through that.'' Another striking tune is the title track, ''Amen,'' which cites individuals as varied as Elvis Presley, Mahatma Gandhi, Ronald Reagan, and Malcolm X, while postulating ''Amen for the unity of us all.'' It's a pretty song in which Cole, who took vocal lessons before entering the studio, extends her range and completely hypnotizes the listener. Cole addresses social issues in ''La Tonya,'' an R&B ballad about a daughter whose parents have broken up but who is still able to conclude, ''My house ain't a home no more/ Still, my faith is unshaken.'' And in ''Free,'' she sings to ''just have the courage to open up yourself.'' Ultimately, the album is all about hope - and about the humility of Cole in the face of her remarkable success. She has diva-like vocal pipes, but not a diva-like disposition. ''It's dangerous if you start to believe that you're the center of the universe,'' she says. ''You kind of are when you're on the road, because you have all these employees and they're there to make it all work. But it's really important to have time off and be with your family and go grocery shopping yourself and clean your toilet yourself. I've since had some time to do that, and I feel more invigorated because of it. ''Fame can be dangerous. It can take you away from where you are sometimes. And it can also make you a nasty bitch sometimes. ''All of my energy was mostly devoted to my career,'' she says of her whirlwind emergence in 1997 and 1998. ''But I was so busy that it really became hard to see my family and my friends, and I suffered personally because of that.'' Cole, who now lives in Manhattan, grew busy again making the new album. She says her last trip to Rockport was in April for her grandmother's 80th birthday. ''I wanted to go there again this summer, but in the end, I couldn't. I was too busy. It kind of broke my heart, because I spiritually needed to get back to my roots again. I'm dying to get back and see the same old rocks and beaches and people. It's very grounding.'' The new album lacks up-tempo songs, which is regrettable in so far as the rhythmic balance is concerned, but it does have many melodies that persuade in a quieter, more thoughtful way. And the production is simply A-plus quality. Cole was the first solo woman ever to receive a solo Grammy nomination for best producer (for ''This Fire''); and she may do so again on the new CD. ''This was way more fun and exciting to produce,'' she says. ''The last time, I had to make a record in two weeks. I had half a budget and a lot of pressure and had to prove myself. I had people coming into the studio to check me out. I was much more nerve-racked. But this time, I had a lot of trust and a lot of faith from people. I had a full budget and could fulfill the dreams that I always had, like have an orchestra. I've been dying to have an orchestra my whole career. I love strings.'' Cole, who likely won't tour until the winter with carry-over bandmates Jay Bellerose (drums) and Kevin Barry (guitar), plus newcomers Doug Wimbush (bass) and Rakiya Diggs (backup vocals), knows that some people ''will think I'm a flake'' because of the new-age-style spirituality expressed on the album. But the sheer beauty of the music should win converts. As she concludes, ''It was the album I always wanted to make.'' - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time. Is this Doug Wimbish, who was the house bassist for Sugar Hill Records 20 or so odd years ago? (It's his monster Chic-like groove on "Rappers' Delight"). He was also with an obscure avant-garde group called Tackhead a decade ago. If this is true, then fans are in for a real treat because Wimbish is a talent on par with Tony Levin. - Patrick - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time. Actually, the japanese release date is October 14th according to http://www.cdjapan.co.jp They're a really dependable site too. I've ordered from them before and the cost is 2079 yen (about $19.78) I had credit card trouble (the company didn't allow charges to be made in asia so I had to get a money order), but all went well. They e-mailed me letting me know when they received the money order as well as when they shipped the item. It was shipped from Japan on a friday and I received it the next Wednesday (maybe Tuesday). I live on the east coast, so that's pretty fast. Anyway, just thought I'd pass this on to you. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time. He quotes Paula >as saying this is the album she always wanted to make. It's actually >pretty >insightful. >Judy > I finally got my copy today, and I must say it's a lot better than I was led to believe. I could do without the strings on "I Believe In Love" and the scratching/rapping etc, BUT I do think Paula's love for soul music shouldn't be that much of a surprise to anyone here. These and other discoesque stylings are merely colors in a very large and varied sonic pallete with which she paints a rainbow of songs. Extended metaphors aside, I think she has used some very inventive instrumentation. For instance, I dig the woodwinds on "Rhythm Of Life" - there's something you don't hear on many rap songs, and yet they work very well. She shows a greater adventurousness than most of her peers in the singer/songwriter community or in the R 'n' B world. She seems virtually free of the posing, posturing, and generally annoying attitude-striking that turns me off to most rap. Plus she isn't timid about using whomping beats that other white artists shy away from. And unlike a lot of white artists who try to co-opt black music, she seems to really embrace this, and has a real feel for it. I can definitely see why she says this is the album she's always wanted to make. It's been polished to a glistening, throbbing near-perfection. I think the lyrics do tend toward the trite here and there, and the steadiness of the beats don't allow for much dynamic variance. Even so, her voice is so thrilling, and her imaginative use of instrumentation so fascinating, I'm willing to overlook a few imperfections. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. And I'm grateful just to have more from her. Sure, there are things I'd have done differently if I had had anything to do with it - but I didn't, and I'm not about to second-guess her choices. Thank goodness there's someone like her out there willing to at least TRY and do something new and different and tasteful with her talent. I'm getting all this just from one listen, too. Believe me, it's pretty unusual for anyone to inspire me to go on like this so soon. Also, there is some lovely artwork in the booklet. She's never looked better, for what that's worth. BTW, Warner Bros also sent along a pretty interesting 4-page press release, which I may transcribe for y'all if I ever find the time.
