Yes, she can. Better focused and more R&B-influenced than Cole's last effort, this marks a real step forward for this impressive singer/songwriter. Combining mesmerizing orchestral pop with stripped-down, inspirational soul, Cole tackles inner-city troubles ("LaTonya"), motivation ("Be Somebody") and the need for love in dramatic and often beautiful fashion. Her singing has never shown so much finesse, and she can belt with authority, too. The opener, "I Believe in Love," sounds like a sure hit, with its disco-fied, pop approach, but it's just the beginning of one of the year's most sensuous albums." There IS an international single for I BELIEVE IN LOVE (Germany and I think Sweden) but I don't have the track listing yet. Our stores here are sold out. I also don't have the EU track listing since we don't get the album until Oct 1, but I think the extra track version is only available in Japan (with Missy's Feeling Love AKA Feelin Da Love) Steve Helsinki www.mp3.com/fakefinn - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time. It's probably the most accurate and honest review of the album I've read yet. The reviewers from Jane magazine and EW gush about the album with such ridiculous enthusiasm that I can't help but wonder if they didn't both write for Tiger Beat at some point in their not-so-distant professional careers. You can probably read it at the website, issue #823. Great photo, though. OK, this is all I know at present: The name of the club is spelled Vynyl. It's located at 1650 Schrader Blvd., Hollywood, CA and their phone number is (323) 465-7449. I called the number earlier and received no assistance from their automatic response system. The message just kept cutting off when I tried to listen to the schedule of upcoming events or if I tried to contact the box office. Eventually, I was able to get through to a real person. I told her that there are a number of fans who want to attend the show who can't find any information about tickets. She took my name and number and said she would have the person who is coordinating the show contact me as soon as possible. As soon as I hear back from this guy, I'll write to let you know what he tells me. The club doesn't have a website and from the way it's sounding so far it looks like tickets are probably only going to be available at the Vynyl box office. No TicketMaster on this one, I'm afraid. Sorry I can't give you more than that, but at least it's a little headway. Peace. Kenn >>> 09/28/99 11:37AM >>> kenn, Please help me find a way to buy tickets for Paula Cole in Hollywood! So far, I've been listening to it in my car, on the way to work and with headphones on here in my office. I've been listening to it over and over and over... I have to say that I really like it. There are a couple of snores on there, but I pretty much like the album in its entirety. I've been a fan since Harbinger came out and there have always been moments on each album that I don't pay much attention to or just skip to the next track. The songs that are kind of a bore to me at this point are: "La Tonya" - So far this song isn't doing a thing for me. "God Is Watching" - I'm finding this one a bit annoying at this time. "Rhythm Of Life" - I kinda' like this song and I kinda' don't. I have a feeling it's going to be one of those ones that will take a while to grow on me and then I'll love it. Her rapping is interesting. It's not great, but it's not bad either. It's almost like a jazzy skat type of thing more than rap. I do like how she switches to singing and goes back and forth. I really dig the rest of the album. The songs that I'm really enjoying are: "I Believe In Love" - It's a feel good, catchy song and great to play real loud when I'm driving down the highway. "Pearl" & "Free" - They both remind me of the traditional Paula songs that I've loved from each album; both lyrically and musically. Especailly "Pearl". I think that's going to be the one I play when I'm in that certain, introspective type of mood. I know it's about a woman, but to me it's more about reflection. "Suwannee Jo" - I totally D.I.G. this version. I've always loved the live version much more than the original version on the "Blue In The Face" sndtk. This new version has almost all of the energy and feeling of the live version. I especially love how she ends it. Like I said, all in all, I really like the album. It's definitely different, but then again, the other 2 albums were pretty different in comparison to each other. There is no beat boxing (like "Chiaroscuro" & "Watch The Woman's Hands") or loud grunts or screams ("Tiger" & "Mississippi"). I love it when she gets pissed like that, but I'll just have to wait until I see her live. She always tends to add a little more of that while improvising. I hope that other people post their reviews after listening to it a few times. I look forward to reading them. We all appreciate Paula in our own, individual ways, and it's always refreshing to read other people's perspectives and interpretations. I guess that's why we're all on this list. I hope everyone has a great day and is enjoying themselves (while listening to the new album). We've all been waiting a long time for this. - -Bri PS Don't forget to watch Paula on Letterman tomorrow night. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I think nobody will remember me; I just resubscribed after a year or so absence... First of all - Amen. I was surprised to find the CD in our stores here in Germany in time on Sept. 28. We are usually the country who gets the best stuff last (don't ask me how many times I've hopped across the border to buy a new CD release!!). Now what can I say after listening once to it? It's great, and fortunately not the super-commercial kind of pop crap from the radio. It has gorgeous lyrics. Some catchy tunes. Only "Suwannee Jo" seems a bit out of place here... sorry, but when I buy a new album I wouldn't expect old songs on it... I read on www.paulacole.com that there'll be an LA show for the industry in October for which a small number of tix will be available for fans. If there's any info on where and when to get tickets, pleeease email me (privately) with that. I MUST get in as a) I happen to be in LA just that time, b) the next day is my birthday and after all the shitty b-days in the last years it'd be gorgeous to start the new year framed by shows of my two favorite performers... I always have a hard time getting tickets for US shows from over here; America does not make it the rest of the world as easy as we make for America :-((( ( c) is that I'm probably Europe's biggest Paula fan ;-)) Finally, I learned from a promo poster of some broadcasts on German radio. Only problem is, they were last week already and they hung up the poster only just today. I never listen to the radio as I have no cable connection in my room... if anybody recorded the programs (preferably on digital), please contact me, I've got a nice trade list with some uncommon shows. Ruediger - back to listen to Amen another time... - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Btw, if you are an AOL subscriber the above instruction will work for your EVERY time. I was a little weary listening to Amen after some people posted sad reviews and all this news about magazines giving poor ratings, but I went out right after school, bought Amen, and I LOVE the cd! I've listened to it once through and already know I love it! The only thing I miss, however, is the empassioned anger (like in Throwing Stones, Mississippi, and Hitler's Brothers and others)...but I like the messages, lyrics (which were given...yeah!), and the overall vibe. The liner book was AWESOME and Paula looks elegant in many of those pictures. The only thing that will take getting used to (I've already started to a little) is Paula rapping on Rhythm of Life. But other than that, I love the cd!!!!
