First, my heartfelt thanks to Preston for the heads-up on CDNow's Liquid Audio offering of "I Believe In Love." I hadn't heard the song until today and now I just finished listening to it about twenty times back to back. Those of you who have known me for the past few years know that, while I'm a big fan of Paula's, I don't hesitate to mention those instances when she or her music leave me feeling less than enthusiastic. I've often mentioned that "Black Boots" has always left me wondering "why did she have to write that Blaaaaack Boooooots." Even the best of musicians/songwriters can do bad things every now and then. But, fortunately for us, artists with the talent that Paula possesses, more often than not, do really good things. And that's what she has done with "I Believe In Love." I am so happy right now. I'm sitting here at the office entirely blissed out from having heard not only *new* Paula music (always a blessed event) but *REALLY GOOD* new Paula music. What a great song!!! Admittedly, it's a radio friendly tune, but most first singles from new albums need to be these days if the rest of the album is going to stand a chance. The song is destined for Top 10 status. VH1 will be playing the hell out of it and the chorus will be stuck in your head for a good long time (just like it happened with "Cowboys"). But all of that marketing strategy aside, this is just a downright lovely song. The lyrics are sweet and uplifting. The string section is warm and soaring. The backbeat is infectious. I can see where critics have said that the instrumentation is retro-70s, but it's not like you just put a Barry White or Donna Summer CD in the player. An unobtrusive wocka-wocka of a bass guitar and the chicka-chicka-chicka-chicka of a rhythm egg lends the song a 70s R&B air, but this song has been blessed with Paula's touch and she managed to bring a fresh new face to that old sound. I mentioned recently that "Free" seemed to be a sort of a love song to Seyi. I'm still pretty sure that's the case and now he has another song written in his honor. "I Believe In Love" is definitely about him and Paula. The lyrics tell the story... "It all started nine years ago/You sat to my left back in school/The future showed itself to me/The god in you, the god in me, stuck together like two trees..." I'm going to send the lyrics to the song in a separate post. But, most importantly.... Paula's voice absolutely flows out of her with ease and confidence. A friend of mine was listening to the song with me and he mentioned that he had noticed that he had always noticed a bit of hesitation in some of Paula's earlier work, as though she was holding back and thinking too much about what she was going to see rather than just letting it rip on the powerful songs or flow on the moody stuff. I have noticed that at times before, too. It never detracted from how much I loved the music at the end of the day, but it's so great to think that she might have overcome that obstacle. Overall, IBIL is probably not the best song Paula has ever written or will ever write, but it's still damned good. I'll be surprised if there are many fans out there who don't like the song. By the way, it appears the string version of the song is what will appear on the album. At least that's what they are offering in Liquid Audio format at CDNow. I'm wondering if the guitar version is some kind of acoustic rendition. I can't imagine how she could pare it down to an acoustic track, but if anyone can, it'd be Paula. Now get over to CDNow and listen to the track. It's only going to be available until Peace. Hit send too soon. The song is available in Liquid Audio at CDNow until October 5th. I thought it said September 5th. Sorry for the alarm. Anyway, I transcribed the lyrics to "I Believe In Love" while I was sitting here playing it over and over again. I have to say that the bridge of the song is killer. Carter mentioned in the ICE article that he thinks the bridge to "Amen" is "unbelievable." If it's better than this one, we're in for a treat. Here's the disclaimer: There are a couple of lines in the second verse about which I'm unsure, but to the best of my knowledge and considering the limitations of my ears, these are the lyrics: _I Believe In Love_ It all started nine years ago You sat to my left back in school The future showed itself to me The god in you, the god in me, stuck together like two trees I was so shy to inquire If you'd like tea sometime But then in my Mercury Hand on hand, hand on knee, mercy mercy mercy me Hand on hand, hand on knee, mercy mercy And I believe in love to be the center of all things And I believe in love to be the way And I believe in love to be the center of all things And I believe in love to be the way to find our inner light I saw a vision where we were opening presents Christmas Day But we were not all alone The wedding vows, shot of gun We had a daughter and a son So how cool to realize You had a warm mind all the time My love burns bright as the sun The clouds may come, the clouds may go And I'll still be here at your door The clouds may come, the clouds may go And I'll still be here And I believe in love to be the center of all things And I believe in love to be the way And I believe in love to be the center of all things And I believe in love to be the way Thank you for waiting through my lovers Knowing we could come home to each other We stand waiting through these winters What you want is waiting here And I believe in love to be the center of all things And I believe in love to be the way And I believe in love to be the center of all things And I believe in love to be the way And I believe in love, love, love I believe in love I know love and I know love And I believe in love Love, love... Enjoy, folks! Peace. Thanks, AberGuy for the CDNow link--but actually no thanks. I love Paula's two first CDs in part because of their LACK of the synth-heavy dance-track-laden SHITE that permeates our airwaves. Sure her voice sounds great, what you can hear of it over the crap drum machine/sequencers/whatever. I am decidedly from the "Disco Sux" school-- very little 'dance music' has EVER had any weight, meaning or musical importance. Add this one to the heap. Shame on you Paula Cole.
