Anyway, just as I was crossing the Delaware River from NJ to PA WXPN played “I Believe In Love” which was my first time hearing it. I thought it was pretty good - not mind-bending or groundbreaking or soul-searching or even all that different from Paula’s previous work - the kind of soulful pop that she does better than just about anyone else I can think of these days. Its rhythm reminded me of "Hitler's Brothers" but that's it - lyrically it's pretty breezy and upbeat I'll add to the speculation and rumors (all we have so far) by saying I’ll bet it’s not the best song on the album, though it is catchy and danceable, but may best fit in with her previous songs - sort of a link. Obviously I'm guessing, we'll find out soon enough. Our expectations and anticipations are high because we’ve been waiting so long for something new, and developments concerning the new album have been so secretive. Any new song will be welcome, but should be evaluated on its own merits without comparison to previous efforts or whether it was worth the wait. But I will say this - earlier in the drive WFUV (I think) played “I Am So Ordinary” which I hadn’t heard in a long time, and I was struck again by how extraordinary a gift her voice is. Given the right material she can move mountains - or people's hearts, which is trickier. And I agree with Kenn re: Sarah's "Surfacing." I was disappointed when it came out as it seemed to pale beside her previous work and didn't meet my expectations. It's grown on me since then, and is indeed a good album ("Building a Mystery," "Angel," and "I Love You" are right up there) though it will never supplant "Solace" and "Fumbling" in my heart. So let's try to be patient a little bit more, and accept "Amen" on its own terms when it arrives. Forget everything you know about Paula Cole with this first single from her upcoming project, "Amen" due Sept. 28. Instead of leaning more modern or insisting on working some obscure angle following her 1996 breakthrough "This Fire", Cole has decided that it's time to have a little fun and the results, complete with a whitewash of strings and disco-fortified instruments, couldn't be more wondrous. We're not talking about a dance single but a midtempo splash dedicated to the idea that all of us are most complete when we're in love. Cole's voice has never sounded more relaxed and confident- she simply soars through her own scripted words, including a chorus that will win listerners over in a single spin. No doubt, this is an intriguing change of direction for the modern adult-oriented artist, but in this solid pop single, she maintains every iota of credibility. Once this hits the airwaves, Cole is destined to scoop up new fans by the hundres of thousands. Spell it smash. So it sounds like Billboard likes the song. I'm still waiting to hear it myself. And if anyone has ticket info on Paula's Roxy show can they please let me know. I definetly want to be there. Formerly a back-up singer for Peter Gabriel, Cole again takes the production and writing reins on Amen. Accompanied by Kevin Barry and Greg Leisz on guitars, drummer Jay Bellerose and Tony Levin (Gabriel, King Crimson) on bass, Cole serves up nine new tracks. The album's first single, "I Believe In Love," is described by her manager, John Carter, as "Barry White-Donna Summer sounding, but then she proceeds to be herself and go all over the place" on the rest of the album. Carter also tells ICE that the title track is a "folk-based tune which goes into this unbelievable bridge with [Gang Starr's] DJ Premier scratching on it. She's blessing everyone [in the lyrics]: O.J. Simpson, Saddam Hussein, Dr. Kevorkian...she blesses them all." Also appearing on the album is TLC's Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins on "Be Somebody," as well as a 62-piece orchestra. Amen's tune stack: "I Believe In Love," "Amen," "La Tonya," "Pearl," "Be Somebody," "Rhythm Of Life," "Free," "Suwannee Jo" and "God Is Watching." **************************************************************************************** Carter sounds even more excited about this album than he did about This Fire. With his approval and the rave review from Billboard that Dennis so kindly shared with us earlier, it's looking like our nagging fears that this album might suck hard are probably unfounded. As if I wasn't already anxious to hear what Paula's been working on.... Anyway, thought you'd all want to read this little blurb. Gives us something else to gnaw on for the next 27 days. And on a somewhat personal note.... Hey, Spanish! Spanish McGee! Where are you? I hope you're still subbed to the list because I want to know what you think about all this. Peace.
