And voicing our opinions are what this is all about. Just ask the always vociferous Chris Povie. Here's mine for now, though: Please give Paula a chance before you get too disappointed. With regard to the brevity of the track listing. Nowadays, nine tracks is probably close to half the number what you get on most albums, but I'm hoping that Paula went for quality over quantity. The album is still over 55 minutes long. Paula only performed "Free" at a few venues - probably about four shows altogether and I think they were all at venues in New York and New Jersey. So, it's a new song for most of her fans even if you've already heard it once. I have to say, "Free" isn't necessarily the best I've heard from Paula, but the song is nice and the lyrics are sweet. I'm guessing she wrote this one for herself and Seyi (or perhaps someone pre-Seyi). I heard it at the Beacon show, too. There wasn't a lot of lyrical meat to it then (and maybe nothing has changed since that time), but it's decent. I'm really happy to see that she put "Suwannee Jo" on this album. The studio version that was recorded for the Blue In The Face soundtrack is markedly different from what she was doing with the song by the end of the This Fire tour. The original version was soft and brooding. Her live version starts off that way, but by the end it possesses a ferocity and "from-her-crotch"edness that makes it one of my most favorite songs of all time. I'm hoping that is the version of "SJ" that she put on the album. If so, it might just make it to the radio and a video would be most welcome. I know where you're coming from. I felt disappointed when Sarah McLachlan's Surfacing was released. First off, it only had 10 tracks. "Full Of Grace" was old hat by then and another song, "Last Dance," was an instrumental piece. Initially, I was supremely disenchanted with Sarah and the entire album. However, after listening to the album for a month or so, the new songs (with the exception of "Last Dance," which still leaves me cold) really grew on me. I still don't think it's Sarah's best work ever, but it's a good album and deserved to be given a chance. Similarly, I hope that your initial disappointment with Paula's new album will wane once you have heard it and have had some time to get into the music. Peace. You wrote: >> by the way, i guess i'm one of the lucky few that this album is actually >> going to be nine new songs because i have never been able to find that >> swanee jo song (or probably spell it, for that matter) It's on the soundtrack for a movie called Blue In The Face. There's a promo copy of the soundtrack up for grabs on eBay right now for a starting bid of $9.99. You can probably find it elsewhere for less, but here's the URL for the auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150758226 Otherwise, you might want to go to www.gemm.com and do a search (by title) for Blue In The Face. You can probably pick up a used copy there for a few bucks. The soundtrack is out of print now as far as I know so you are likely to find it on CDNow or the other music sites that sell new CDs. Hope you can grab a copy. Suwannee Jo is a great song. Peace.
