Paula Cole Band? [Kenneth R Carpenter ] Re: (harbinger) Where's Phil ["Steve Bornstein" Subject: (harbinger) Cover Art? Paula Cole Band? Just thought you all might want to take a gander at what might be the cover art for Paula's new album, Amen. The image appears on a promotional card that is part of a lot being sold on eBay. According to the seller, these cards are being handed out gratis at Lilith Fair. The image shows Paula sporting white-girl dredlocks a la Alanis M. But, more interesting than the trendy ethno-eccentricity of Paula's nappy, gnarly head is the print off to the right of the photo. It reads "Paula Cole Band." Paula Cole *Band*? Is that like Dave Matthews Band? When did that happen? Anyway, if you want to see this card, just go to: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=136337524 Hell, you might even feel like bidding. Just to sweeten the pot, the bidder is even offering the Biore sample they handed her as she walked through the gates of Lilith Fair '99. I guess if you have blackheads and want to own this Paula card, this auction has your name written all over it. ;^) And, hey.. while I'm asking all these questions and feeling surly because I only got three hours of sleep last night, let me throw in another one that's been chafing my ass for a while now. Where is Phil Sullivan? Last I heard, no one had even seen or heard from him recently and that was back in the wintertime. I'm getting a sneaking suspicion that our old buddy, Phil, isn't going to be around these parts anymore and that his days as Paula's tour manager/sound engineer are also a thing of the past. Anyone heard anything to the contrary? Does anyone from Warner Bros. still subscribe to this list? Phil has a lot of friends at Harbinger and we'd like to know what's up with him and whether or not we're going to get to see him again. Any information from anyone (WB-affiliated or not) would be much appreciated. That's all from me for now. So be it. Amen. Peace. Thanks Ken for your post about the eBay auction. I took the chance to surf over to the site and look at what was being offered. After seeing what was there I too am a bit shocked at Paula's look very much Alanis M. style. The thing that I was shocked most about was the cover art for the new CD...if this is indeed the art that will grace the new cover. Controversial things can be said for the artwork shown and if indeed the CD is going to be released during the winter in time for sale during the Christmas rush. The picture in itself seems to be a mockery in a sense toward the images seen of Jesus, not that I am a big person on religion myself but with a title like 'Amen' and a image like the one being seen now I am sure someone somewhere is going to strike a chord like that when Madonna released 'Immaculate Conception'. I don't think after seeing the image of Paula that she has indeed "found God". The grassroots of traditional black music may be a ground for her new CD but I would say to expect the same Paula possibly just toned down. The photo shows Paula with the Alanis style dredlock look in what looks to be a white sheet with her arms crossed hugging herself. She is looking down and her eyes look as if they are closed maybe as if to think and behind her head is red-orangeish looking rays like sun or light. The picture is done in the same fashion as those done of Jesus on his rising. For those of you who are more curious check out the site. http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=136337524 I just thought I would post how I see this new photo. By the way I have wondered where Phil is also the page he had up selling merchandise for Paula was gone a few months back and I haven't seen any posts from him since they were in Europe last fall/winter. Let's just pray another case of mistaken identity hasn't pulled him away. I just doubled checked and his site on netcom.com where he was promoting some of Paula's merchandise is gone... I just figured maybe they had been busy with the new CD and things.... This is all I know, and it ain't much. When I went into the city back at the end of March to see Donna DeLory and Bliss, Jay Bellerose was there (no surprise - he and DDL are "an item") in the audience, not in the band - though he did jam on the second set. I asked him a few questions, including where/how is Phil. My memories of this interchange are vague, as I had literally dragged myself out of my sickbed to get there, and was running a slight fever, but I recall Jay was also vague. What I remember is that Phil was attending to his personal life, and was pretty much off of Paula's team. I would have posted to the list at that time, but you see it's really not much. What I suggest is this: Donna DeLory and Bliss are making a 3-week east coast swing starting Friday. They will be at The Bottom Line Friday 7/30 for WFUV's "Required Listening" series at 7:30 and 10:30. They will also be at Fez (under Time Cafe) on Tuesdays 8/3 and 8/10 at 8:15. It's a good bet that Jay will be there. If a few harbingerarians go you can hopefully pin him down and get some straight answers out of him. Even if he knows nothing, you should still enjoy the show. More dates follow at the end (from www.donnadeloryfanclub.com, de facto official site while the real one is under construction) One other possibility is to e-mail Phil directly, something I have considered but haven't worked up the nerve to do. There's no guarantee he would respond, or even want to hear from any of us. His addy is ILML@aol.com but please think long and hard about using it. A lot of people are very protective of their privacy. > >That's all from me for now. So be it. Amen. > Ouch!! Zing!! Now, whether or not there is controversy about this photo - I daresay there will be, as it seems calculated to irk religious conservatives - it is a beautiful image. I think Paula is made of tough stuff, and can withstand barbs from the religious right. She may want to move on from whatever persona people imagine she has, as well as stir things up a bit. How this relates to the music will be interesting to see, and I can hardly wait. Zia zaid: >> I took the chance to surf over to the site and look at what was being >> offered. After seeing what was there I too am a bit shocked at Paula's >> look very much Alanis M. style. Actually, I didn't say I was shocked by the dreds on Paula. I just mentioned that she had the twista-braids in her head. Paula's hair -- be it on her head or growing out of her much maligned armpits -- really has no major shock value for me. Besides, for all we know, she might have only had her hair put in those white-girl dreds for the photo. This particular style does make her look quite Lilithy, especially with the ethnic-looking sun/corona/halo jobbie stick up around her head. The shot seems pretty commercial to me, but that's just my opinion and who am I to say, anyway? She's the one out there making some bucks from a music career and inspiring folks like us to talk about her hair. If Paula does the commercial MTV stuff, that's her business. So, anyway, just wanted to restate my position on this... not shocked. Just observing and commenting. :^) >> The thing that I was shocked most about was the cover art for the new >> CD...if this is indeed the art that will grace the new cover. I guess I didn't think "Jesus" when I first saw the photo. OK, I thought "Jesus," but it wasn't in that same context. It was more like, "Oh, Jesus... is she really looking like Alanis or what?" Actually, my strongest impression from this photo was "Lilith Fair" ----- ancient mother goddess leaning heavily toward the Judeo-Christian Joan Osborne St. Teresa "she is your holy Mary" wearing the Shroud of Turin and jewelry from the Sarah McLachlan line Lilith Fair. The concept for the photo certainly isn't the most inspired piece I've ever seen. I would much prefer seeing what the wonderful photographers Pierre et Gilles might come up with in a mixed media rendition of Paula. I have seen the fanciful and incredibly cool work these gentlemen did on other musicians, like Nina Hagen, Kylie Minogue and Siouxsie Sioux (just to name a few) and I think Paula has just the kind of style needed to pull that kind of shot off. Oh, well... maybe some other time. Just so you might know what the hell I'm talking about, you can check out some of Pierre et Gilles work at: http://www.geocities.com/WestHollywood/7657/petg.htm This isn't anything close to their best work, but it's a sample anyway. The style of the photo of Medusa is closer to the style I'm thinking would be great for a Paula. Talk about dreds! Yikes! Anyway, I don't think Paula will catch much heat from the Christian community for her haloed appearance in this shot. Even the fundamentalist Christians have had some desensitization training since the days of Madonna's "Like A Prayer" video simply by being world citizens. If this is the cover art for Amen, it would have to be closer to blasphemous in order to raise eyebrows (like when Paula went nekked on the cover of This Fire ). This, however, is such a humdrum shot that I'm fairly certain it will go largely overlooked. >> I don't think after seeing the image of Paula that she has indeed "found >> God". I'm withholding comment on the music from Amen until I actually hear it.
