Yeah, I've > heard Paula mention both of them as both personal and musical influences, > along with Aretha, Annie Lennox, Kate Bush, Miles Davis, Bob Marley, etc. umm, i don't think it's creative license. when i had dinner with phil last paula tour, i mentioned that i was a tori amos fan and that i was missing the tori show in cincinnati that same night to see paula. (it was worth it. i have the boot of the cinci show and the setlist wasn't that spectacular.) he was like, "oh yeah!?" and said that paula was a big fan of tori's work. > Those who have haunted this list for a few years know of my strong aversion > to Tori, so I had to address this one. it's all good, but i think you're wrong this time. ;) > And please... don't send me hate mail because I don't like Tori. Hi Erin My impression of online stores is that they want you to spend as much money as possible there. One way they do this is the old "If you like that you might also like this, and that, and the other" routine. If they want to call these "influences," well, THAT is creative license. I seriously doubt they have someone doing in-depth research on who has influenced whom. What they WILL do is monitor people's buying patterns - as in what other artists do people who buy Paula's CD's also buy - in an effort to maximize the effectiveness of their demographic consultant. I forget which online store ran this number on me but I just about fell out of my chair - they were suggesting 3 - 4 openly gay acts! Apparently their research turned up a certain amount of correspondence between Paula's fans and the gay community. I don't know how true or untrue that may be but it certainly is irrelevant to her music and kind of rude. And now that I'm repeating it it looks pretty silly, even though I've heard that Paula has defended gays and other victims of prejudice and intolerance. As well she should. I guess what I'm saying is take those kinds of suggestions with as much salt as your diet permits. They're trying to steer you in a certain direction, but I'm sure you can make up your own mind! You can click on the date for the show you want to go to and find out the lineup. To do this for each show takes too long, so I will post the artist and venue lists. If someone wants to take the time to post the whole thing go for it. Once again they have found a wealth of talent wishing to climb aboard, and it pleases me to see that some of the artists I've been singing the praises of have been included - Sinead Lohan, Beth Orton, Aimee Mann, Susan Tedeschi (there's room at Lilith for the blues). And it's great to see The Pretenders here - so many people owe Chrissie Hynde so much. That's the good news. The bad news is - are you sitting down? OK - No Paula Cole. No Heather Nova. I have to give Lilith Fair full credit for introducing me to these extraordinarily talented artists, and I can't help feeling the tour is somewhat diminished in stature without them. Still, more people are being added all the time - in fact Tracy Bonham and Lisa Loeb have come on board while I've been sitting here - so who knows? Plus nothing has been announced yet about Europe, Asia, and Australia. Once again, there is a talent search for local artists to appear on the Village Stage. Rules and procedures are available at the site. So tell your favorite artists. I did this last year and it actually worked for a CT singer/songwriter, Donna Martin, so don't think it can't! Oh, and - tickets for most venues go on sale the weekend of May 22-23. The exceptions are: NJ - May 1 NY - May 8 Indianapolis - May 15 So without much further ado, here are the artists and venues they've announced so far. You can figure out who's playing where and when this way, or go to the site. I will post the lineups for southern NE and NY for my friends in the area and because the lineups are very similar. Nice to see things coming along for this year's Lilith but sadly I am not happy with the local shows in my area. First and foremost...no Paula!! I was kinda hoping I would get the chance to see her this year now we are settled again...for the time being. The only two shows close to me are well over 3 hours away and sadly I think I am gonna pass on the show. As much as I love Sarah, Sheryl and Shawn- I have seen all but Shawn live and I am not thrilled by seeing Mya or Monica at all...the whole R&B/hiphop thing just does not appeal to my taste all that well. Living here in this area of Texas and Louisiana I am finding that genre of music is quite popular, just not with me. The only other headliner is Luscious Jackson and I think I would rather see them someplace more intimate like LaLuna in Portland. I could take the option to go over to Atlanta for a weekend and see the show there but I am not sure how far away exactly Atlanta is from me however the lineup there becomes more down to Earth with the Indigo Girls and Suzanne Vega joining the show...and who can pass up seeing Chrissie Hynde!!!! The Nashville line-up looks the best if you are in the South and looking to catch the show. I am also very impressed with a two day stint at the Gorge in George, WA it is a magnificent place and when I was there in 1997 it was terribly packed. There is alot of fun in the days prior to the shows also there because many people camp out at the local camping areas and even at the Gorge itself. Also, the Portland show is awesome compared to 2 years ago when the show was at the fairgrounds in Salem. I was one of the people who really suggested that they move the show up north to Portland. So much more to offer fairgoers in Portland than in Salem and much more space. Well, there are my thoughts on the fair. Sadly I am in no way impressed with this years line-up especially in the area I am in. Seems like all the good dates are along the cost...anyone have a idea why that is?? Sixpence None The Richer is from this area and they are not even on a local date. :( It would also been nice to see Leah Andreone and some heavier alternative artists on this year's line-up...maybe even Joydrop fronted by Tara Sloan who is a regular on Mortal Kombat the TV series??? Anyways, if the get the chance to see the Fair by all means enjoy it but I do feel like this years tour leaves alot to offfer behind... Til next time ~Zia~ PS...JourneyBear, did you send my Margot tape?? Hi! I thoought that's what was going on. I doubted that the online "superstores" did thorough research on every artist. I think a lot of it is kind of "if you like Paula you might like so and so" kind of thing. Which is funny because that's implying that there are a lot of similarities between Paula's music and the others. There may be; the only one I actively listen to is Tori Amos, and I certainly see the empowered woman at her piano connection. That's kind of funny about Paula and the gay community. A lot of artists defend gays, but they had to pick her. ;) You'd think if they were attributing a crusade to an artist, they would choose racism for her because she's always talking about how wonderful black people are. It is silly. I'm sure those gay bands didn't have much in common with her musically except that they appeal to homosexuals. If Paula were some kind of violent homophobe or something, I could see choosing to avoid her music on moral grounds. However, I don't think that saying "wow gay people like her" or "she must sound just like Chet Baker" is a fair statement. I get really tired of people having to be compared to somebody else in order to survive musically. I know they have to do that for simplicity's sake "why listen to so and so?" "she sounds just like phoebe snow!!" "ok i'll listen!" and not a matter of "because she's really awesome." But anyway, where am I headed? I have no idea. I guess it's back to the den to sleep more and try to feel better. Thanks for sharing your ideas!
