It will NOT be similar to the last one, but will not be "jazz" either. thats all I can say for now! :) paula - ---------- From: Kenneth R Carpenter To: harbinger@smoe.org Subject: Re: (harbinger) Paula and jazz album Date: Thu, Mar 25, 1999, 9:11 PM Unbelievable. An actual thread on Harbinger! I wouldn't be surprised to see Warner Bros. support Paula in her desire to release a jazz album. They already have a considerable number of jazz acts on the label and they were, after all, responsible for releasing the film and soundtrack of Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil, which was greatly focused on Johnny Mercer songs. Will the WB support a jazz album from Paula now? Who knows? I doubt it. I can't imagine the label taking that kind of risk this early in their involvement in Paula's career. They've only distributed one album from her so far. It kicked ass and grabbed seven Grammy nominations, but she was also named Best New Artist at the Grammys. That has been the kiss of death for many before her. As such, I would think they would ask her to put out at least one more pop/rock album first. Harbinger wasn't as widely popular when it was released as This Fire (and look how long it took for people to start buying This Fire!) so I can see Warner Bros. viewing Paula's upcoming release as her "sophomore" effort, at least as far as they are concerned. At the end of the day, Imago is still her label. Warner Bros. is simply acting as distributor. Ultimately, Warner is probably going to have a lot more say about what is going to fly and what isn't with regard to the style of music (please refer to the Artist Formerly Known AS Prince). When the risk of failure is lower, I think (ok... I hope) they'll back a jazz CD from Paula all the way. He was in the audience rather than onstage (as he was when they came through last December) partly because he's been busy with recording Paula's new album. Paulajr is quite right - there may be some occasional jazziness but it won't be a total departure. Of course Paula will venture into uncharted territory, but she won't go sailing off the edge of the earth! BTW, I strongly recommend checking out Bliss. They don't come out east too often and are very much worth catching. They are one of those special artists who do more than just play their songs as well as they can, they create a unique sound, an ambience. For this and other reasons I shan't mention here there is a real possibility they may open for Paula on her next tour. The nucleus is Donna DeLory, writer, singer, and harmonium, and Cameron Stone, cellist, both acoustic and electric. In addition to the following dates they've added a show at Starbucks on Lafayette St in NYC Sunday 3 PM. This may be the best place to see them yet, as crowd noise and other distractions should be minimal. Friday, March 26th at "The Metro Cafe" in Washington D.C at 9:30pm.
