Grammy Nominations To Be Announced

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) -- Since Lauryn Hill won two Grammys as part of the
hip-hop trio the Fugees, she has emerged as a music star in her own right.

Her solo album, ``The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,'' won critical acclaim last
year and could bring her yet another Grammy -- for album of the year.

Along with Celine Dion, Shania Twain and Will Smith, Hill was among the
favorites to receive Grammy Award nominations today. The 41st annual awards
ceremony will be held next month in Los Angeles.

Hill's ``Doo Wop (That Thing)'' also was a favorite for nomination as record
of the year, along with Dion's ``My Heart Will Go On,'' and Twain's ``You're
Still the One.''

Natalie Imbruglia's big radio hit ``Torn'' was a contender for best record,
along with ``The Boy is Mine'' by Brandy & Monica, ``Truly Madly Deeply'' by
Savage Garden, Smith's ``Gettin' Jiggy Wit It'' and ``I Don't Want to Wait''
by Paula Cole, last year's best new artist.

Also favored in the best album category was Dion for ``Let's Talk About
Love,'' which contains the hit single ``My Heart Will Go On'' made famous by
the movie ``Titanic.''

Hill and Dion were expected to compete for best album with fellow Canadian
Twain, whose ``Come On Over'' has sold more than 6 million copies, and
Madonna, who received her best reviews for ``Ray of Light.''

In the best new artist category, leading contenders were Hill, teen sensations
'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, Lucinda Williams, Imbruglia and the country
trio Dixie Chicks.

Two new categories have been added this year to acknowledge the growth of
dance music in the pop world. Awards for best dance recording and re-mixer of
the year were added, along with a Latin alternative rock album award, bringing
to 92 the number of Grammys that will be presented.

The awards will be presented Feb. 24 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles
during a three-hour ceremony to be telecast live on CBS.

The show originated in New York the past two years, and Michael Greene,
president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, has said the
awards will return to that city.

But Los Angeles officials are lobbying to have the 2000 show held in the
Staples Center, which is under construction downtown and scheduled to open
this fall.

Subject: (harbinger) Don't miss the Whitlams.....

Just a quick word from an aussie living in Japan. Heidi was spot on with 
her advice about the group the Whitlams. I've seen them at least a dozen 
times over the last few years, as they were something of a local 
favourite in my home city of Newcastle.

If you can catch the Whitlams on the upcoming tour of the States, or 
listen to their last album Eternal Nightcap, then do so. perhaps not 
quite as powerful as paula cole or jeff Buckley, but pretty damm 
close!!!

future???
