Just when we all thought that we wouldn't be hearing any Paula news for a while (particularly with regard to new music!), here comes something to get us through these cold wintry nights..... Ever since finding an obscure reference on the internet a couple of months ago, I've been trying to hunt down this information for myself and to share with all of you, but only today did I get a break. As you might recall, Paula participated in the Stormy Weather '98 concert to benefit the Walden Woods project. Others who performed at that show were Bjork, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow, Trisha Yearwood, Sandra Bernhard and Gwen Stefani. At the time of the benefit, no one from the list had attended the show or even knew second-hand what song(s) Paula performed, except that whatever she sang probably fell into the category of blues/jazz standards as was publicized prior to the show. Today, I finally found out what songs Paula performed. According to the person from whom I got this information (someone who worked directly on the project), he knows for certain that Paula performed "You've Changed" and "Never Will I Marry." Both are definitely considered to be blues/jazz standards and might remind you quite a lot of the tone and lyrics of Paula's rendition of "Autumn Leaves" on the Midnight In The Garden... soundtrack. They're sad songs about love lost and love denied. Not exactly what a lot of Paula's fans look forward to from her (I mean, these songs aren't like "Throwing Stones" y'know), but still most welcome to those who are glad to see her continuing to work her jazz muscles. Here's the really good news.... A CD benefiting the Walden Woods project is scheduled for release in the not-so-distant future and Paula's performance of "You've Changed" has been chosen to appear on the album!!!! There is no definitive information right now as to when the album will be made available to the public or if it will be sold commercially. It might very well end up being distributed initially via a corporate sponsor as some kind of promotional item. In any event, I will pass along more information about the album if or when it comes along. So, at least we'll have something new to look forward to (hopefully) prior to the release of the new album. At last word, the Lennon tribute is still stalled out and nothing at all is happening with the "Feelin' Love" remix Paula did with Missy Elliott. Maybe this will be our saving grace. One quick note.... does anyone know what song or songs Paula performed for the Dalai Lama when he visited New Jersey earlier this year? That's one I've been wondering about for months. :^) Peace. "Never Will I Marry" is from a Broadway musical called "Greenwillow" by Frank Loesser. I am not familiar with this show. He wrote many better known shows, his most famous is probably "Guys And Dolls." Hope this helps your search somewhat. Still drawing a blank on "You've Changed."
