Hawkins in trouble Hello everyone!!! This is important, and it involves the singer and songwriter Sophie B. Hawkins. If you are not interested in her or her songs (The hits Damn I wish I was your Lover and As I lay Me Down, just delete this...) For the past four years, Sophie has been working on her new album entitled Timbre. The release date was scheduled for october sixth, but because of the song "Lose Your Way" (hopefully a single) it will not be released until Sophie compromises herself and her music. Sony (her record label) has decided that because of the use of a banjo on that song, it will not be radio friendly, and become a big hit, so they would like Sophie to rerecord the song and replace the banjo with a guitar. This may seem like a simple thing, but this is destroying Sophie's ability and freedom of expression. If you would like to help, please send emails complaining of this situation to Sophiebhawkins@flagg.net. Sophie wishes that she will have enough emails and letters to take into Sony and prove that the public wants to hear the song the way that Sophie meant it. To get more information, you may go to alt.music.sophie-hawkins and read the posts that other people have sent from all over the world. Thank you!!! If we didn't have freedom of expression, would the Beastie Boys have made it in the rap world? Would Nirvana have made it in the rock world? Bring on the BANJOS! Hawkins in trouble Dear fellow Harbingers, Just a short de-lurk from the world of the pre-surgically drugged. I have to post and then it is back to my bed for some more sleep before I have my entire right big toenail removed in the morning. I had to make this post though cause I feel as if the recording labels are getting their heads to high and not seeing a artist for who they are. This is really a sad part of the music industry. > This is important, and it involves the singer and songwriter Sophie B. >Hawkins. If you are not interested in her or her songs (The hits Damn I wish I >was your Lover and As I lay Me Down, just delete this...) If, you do not own either of Sophie's CD's you are missing out on a truly remarkable artist. Her debut release entitled 'Tongues and Tails' was a excellant debut and featured the song "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" pushing Sophie into the music world. The sophmore release 'Whaler' brought a softer more relaxing sound from Sophie B and "As I Lay Me Down" brought even more respect to Sophie from her fans. >For the past four years, Sophie has been working on her new album entitled >Timbre. The release date was scheduled for october sixth, but because of the >song "Lose Your Way" (hopefully a single) it will not be released until Sophie >compromises herself and her music. Four years and nothing from Sophie and I have a very deep feeling we will not hear anything from Sophie for a while. From what I can tell Sophie is very headstrong and her to compromise would be a task. I don't know if this is the same trouble met by Canada's Amanda Marshall in releasing her second album but I guess I am just gonna sit and wait for the albums. Even if Sophie waits til the fall of 99 I will be behind her. > >Sony (her record label) has decided that because of the use of a banjo on that >song, it will not be radio friendly, and become a big hit, so they would like >Sophie to rerecord the song and replace the banjo with a guitar. Sony is making a mistake...In the early 1990's Anything Box was signed to Epic music and released a album entitled 'Peace' however when they went to record the second album the label met them with opposition. Anything Box comprised of Dania Morales, Claude S. and Paula Rijnders were told to leave the electronica sound they were known for and made a more rock sounding album. Paul left Anything Box to persue a solo career and the band records a second album entitled 'Worth' in Germany however the bands decision to leave Epic becomes clear and they give up the second release in order to get free from Epic. Claude's lil brother joins the band and trio forms their own label OrangeWerks, and record the second released CD entitled 'Hope'. And in 1998 Anything Box is still alive and strong...with concerts and a new album on Jarret Records. OrangeWerks and Jarret merged in 1996 and work began on the newest album entitled Elektrodelica (with a formal working title of "exhibition"). However the road for Anything Box has not been a easy one the band has never compromised their sound for the studio. I am saddened to see the music labels try and force a band to be someone they are not. I think when a label decides to sign a band they are brought to the band by their sound more than anything else just as we the listener buy a CD cause we like the musicians style and sound. I don't think it is a wise move of the label to try and make a artist conform to what is popular at that time. The artist themselves is why most people by a album in particular...to see growth and change is expected but a label should not force a artist to change. > >Sophie wishes that she will have enough emails and letters to take into Sony >and prove that the public wants to hear the song the way that Sophie meant it. > Bring on the banjo or the harpsicord or cello...it doesn't make a huge difference to the TRUE fans. Look at Paula's music...'harbinger' and 'This Fire' are two totally different albums and however the sound may not have been what you expected I am sure you didn't blow off Paula cause her sound changed. I think music is something that must be appreciated and I am certain that Sophie has a reason for wanting the banjo in her song, however unpopular of a instrument it may be... Look at Madonna and her album that featured 'La Isla Bonita' and how the Latin flair tossed into one song didn't damage her career. Many artists have played with new sounds. I don't see what the big deal is with Sophie trying something new.... Just my opinions.... Plus or minus a few cents.... Kara and I also went to the GQ awards in NYC!!!!! We had such a fabulous weekend! First Paula put on a great show! The version of WHATCG is the same one she's been doing latley...I heard her perform it in Minneapolis at Lilith and at the Troubadour in LA. For Cowboys she wore black pants, shirt, and boots, and like Kenn said for IDWTW she wore a red dress! Let me say that Madonna looked fabulous too!!!! I believe that they will air on VH1 on Halloween, but make sure to check local listings and rock on tv. Earlier that day Kara and I got on MTV total request to introduce Alanis' new video Thank You, we were pretty excited just to do that, then after the video Carson talked to us, and asked if we were big fans of Alanis and how would we feel if he invited us up to the studio for Alanis TV that aired in 10/23!!!!! We just screamed and were hugging and jumping up and down!!! They sat us in the studio for almost 2 hours before they brought Alanis out, it was really cool to see "behind the scenes", and getting to talk to Alanis during commercial break. She was very nice, and shook our hands as she was leaving!!! What a great time we had in NY---can't wait till we go back!!!!
