Back out of the shadows again for a couple of concert reviews I thought you might like to hear about. Went to the GQ Men of the Year Awards two nights ago. Dennis Miller hosted with special performances by Seal and Paula. The awards ceremony was as lame as any other you've seen on television - lame jokes read from teleprompters by celebrities and film montages of the nominees' professional work on a big screen. However, Paula performed a couple of songs - Cowboys and IDWTW - so that made it a more than bearable evening. The version of Cowboys she performed was different than any I've heard her do on stage in the past. This rendering was more like the Drugstore Cowboy remix. Throughout the song, the background "de-doo-doo de-doo-doo" heard in the Drugstore Cowboy mixes played while Paula sang. The lighting effects were pretty cool and it was very nice to watch Paula and Jay play drums in tandem at the end of the song (in place of the usual hop-kick-to-the-side-tambourine action). Her performance of IDWTW was pretty much the usual fare except that she didn't play piano during the song. Wearing a red dress, she sang in front of the band and an enormous backdrop of a big tree with gold autumnal leaves. The GQ Men of the Year Awards will be shown on VH-1 sometime in the very near future. One of the guys from GQ announced that the show will air next week, but keep an eye on Rock On TV (www.rockontv.com) or the list for updated information on that. [That's the end of the Paula content, folks.] Last night, I went to see Patty Griffin perform at the Bowery Ballroom. I had missed her show back in August because I was on vacation (and I found out last night that she did a duet with Emmylou Harris at the show - ARGGGHHHHH!!!!), so this unexpected return to NYC by Patty was much appreciated. Her set consisted of: *Main Set* Go Now Flaming Red Change Christina Carry Me Peter Pan Moses Mad Mission Wiggley Fingers Daddy Blue Sky Little God (a new song that is AWESOME!!!) Tony Mary *First Encore* One Big Love Even Here - a cover of a Paul Westerberg song *Second Encore* A cover of a Bruce Springsteen song I didn't recognize Patty was really great last night. She doesn't have as strong a stage presence as Paula does and doesn't interact with the audience much, but when she and her band are performing, they are definitely into it and she is very gracious when it comes to thank fans for their support. Patty is all concentration when she is playing guitar and singing and that voice from the CDs is just as great on stage. Boy, can she holler!! The mood of her set was really varied as far as mood and tempo were concerned and made for a really cool show. Patty is still touring, so if you haven't gotten to see her yet, check her out when she comes to your part of the world. You won't be sorry. She's also going to be singing the National Anthem before the Colts game on November 1st (can't wait to hear her belt out that tune!!) and I read that she is considering a European tour. Maybe she'll even go to Helsinki so that my favorite devilish delight and bonafide Patty convert, Steve Stewart, can see her do her thing. ;^) Peace. I was there both nights at the Troubadour too. On the second night Paula opened with Suwannee Jo. (It was damn good too!) This isn't a new song. It was first released in 1995 (i think) on the Blue in the Face Soundtrack (it's a pretty good movie too.) In the liner notes of the soundtrack it says it was recorded at Paula's house (correct me if i'm wrong). A few bootleg tapes have a live version of it, or the bootleg Diffidence has the Blue in the face version. Hope this helps. I'd love to know if there's a new song she's performing too.
