I had no idea what to expect but I was a little concerned that the talented, amazing Paula was opening for Matchbox 20. Still I drove from Austin looking forward to another wonderful Paula-live experience. (I saw her a year ago in at a Univ of Houston show) To my dismay, I was soon surrounded by kids no older than 15 who were obviously there to see Matchbox 20. When Paula came on they kept talking and screaming and not even paying attention to her. It was disheartening to try and feel the haunting emotion of Mississipi or Throwing Stones in this circus-like atmosphere. I felt really bad for my friend, who was seeing Paula for the first time. She didn't have a prior experience -- like me -- to compare it to. I felt so lucky when I left last night (right after Paula's last song) that I had seen her last year in an intimate setting where SHE was the headliner, and where NO ONE spoke -- as they were in awe of her performance and talent...I know she has to do these tours since she has a Warner Bros. contract, but it seems so sad to me that she has to do them when she is so out of place! Still, I have to hand it to her, Ms. Cole always seems to enjoy herself no matter where she performs. And my friend pointed something out to me while I was lamenting over the concert... that for Paula, it doesn't really matter what the audience is doing -- she is up there singing her songs and getting into it and it's obvious she just wants to tour the country and sing...so in a way it was a cool experience. And not ALL the kids were disrespectful -- there were the two cutest girls in front of me about 12 years old who danced and sang every word to Paula's songs! It's good to know that she is influencing a younger generation of women...I wish I'd had her as a role model when I was that age. That's it for now...just a few thoughts... I noticed a H.O.R.D.E. tour promo/compilation cd being offered as a prize in a contest in the back of JANE magazine (purchaced to cut up and mutilate because it has a nice font...). It listed Paula as one of the artists featured on the CD, but it didn't say which song. I think it's Throwing Stones (which is cool because it'd expose people to a different side of Paula rather than Cowboys or Me). I don't know if it's live or not, but i don't think it is. On Tuesday i called Rainy Day. The guy said that the new paula cole boot should have been out by now, but he hadn't seen nor heard from the company that was releasing it. He said he'd try to contact them this week and he'd know by Sat or Sun if he didn't "blow away" (they're located in So FL). I forgot to mention that when i was at the concert i talked to the road manager guy. He said the website should be re-vamped within a month or so. They also had a new tee-shirt. It was dark grey with Paula Cole written on the back with white letters. On the front there was a picture of a man in a tank top, boxers, and knee-high socks surrounded by all types of dresses (kimono, etc. - kinda like what paula's stage used to be decorated in.) I'll post what i hear from the Rainy Day people when i get a hold of them again.
