Now, is it just me, or is that not a "mad" song to be screaming and jumping around to? I think she's trying to be Alanis. But only minus Alanis's instrument playing and songwriting talents. It just seems that she's someone who's made up by a record company.....like the Spice girls... >> this isn't a personal attack guys, i promise, it's just tiring hearing every female performer who happens to scream or move around onstage compared to alanis and labelled a member of the angry grrls in rock brigade, you know? [bill's comment reminded me of that ... this is *not* a personal attack on him! please know and understand that! :)] alanis, like paula and natalie, performs because she loves to and because it is her avenue of self expression ... i don't think it's fair to say natalie imbruglia is 'trying' to be alanis -- she isn't and just because her onstage movements may somehow be reminiscent of alanis' doesn't by any means indicate that she's copying her. i'm tired of the music press, in particular, and their need to somehow link every female artist to her contemporaries, thereby labelling her a wannabe tori, alanis, sarah or whoever. i've been a great admirer of paula's music for four years now and not many other australians seem to know who she is, though the reviews that appeared in the local press of "this fire" irked me greatly. why? because they *all* stated that paula was attempting what many labelled a pale imitation of alanis morissette. it's lazy journalism, you know? and as somebody who has found a great deal of comfort in the music of tori amos, and also artists like alanis morissette and paula cole, it annoys me when people feel the need to label each a carbon copy wannabe of their immediate predecessor simply because she too may use music as her means for self expression and catharsis. sure, somebody may not love tori's music the way i do; just as somebody may not like natalie imbruglia or paula cole, polly jean harvey or sarah mclachlan, the indigo girls or one of a handful of other musical performers. that is *their* right. i do, however, think it's only fair to respect that natalie imbruglia's music and lyrics are an expression of her emotions, as much as alanis morissette or paula's is -- and it takes a lot to put that out on the line -- down on record and hand it to the world to listen to and alternately rhapsodise over, or tear to pieces. for me, when it comes to art -- be it visual or otherwise -- the expression: "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" is important, along with respecting an individual's right to freedom of expression and creativity regardless of our own personal views on their work. i may not like a particular painting or a particular song, but i try really hard to resist dragging that person down over it or labelling them an imitator of another in their field. it's all instinctive, all a matter of self expression ... i can't ever begrudge anybody's exorcising their hurt, depression, sadness, anger, happiness or jubilation in which ever manner they see fit, even if i don't personally happen to enjoy their music, their writing, their painting or their film. heidi xo. - --- "i'm a winter girl; i like coming out when things are desolate and everybody's about to slit their wrists." ~ *tori amos* [my faerie queene]. ~*~ "sometimes i wish i didn't feel so deeply about things ... there doesn't seem to be any sort of limit to what i feel about, whether it's a lover or a brand of tea bag. sometimes i wish i could let things ride a bit more." ~ *polly jean harvey*. - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 08:24:23 -0700 (PDT) From: TerriG Subject: Fwd: (harbinger) Re: Music(this is cool) - ---Scott Evans wrote: > > > > > > > This is an online cd. A former Fumbler (Michael Moore) is in the publishing business and when I contacted him, he put me in touch with one of the top editors from BOOK-OF-THE-MONTH CLUB in New York City. BOMC is now one of my regular clients. I read manuscripts and write reviews and recommendations for them. Then one day out of the blue, I received an e-mail from a West Virginia author named Michael D. McClellan. He asked if I would review a techno- thriller he had written and self-published. The name of the book is In Plane View and it's a wonderful book, especially for people who like to read about computer hacking. If you visit the website, you can read my FIRST PUBLISHED REVIEW!!! On the 26th of this month, I'll be heading down to Huntington, West Virginia, for McClellan's book signing at Renaissance Book Company. This will be our first meeting, and he'll be giving me the first 200+ pages of his next novel so that I can start editing them for him. Yes, I'm excited. ;-) So if anyone lives near there, the book signing is from 2 - 4pm on Saturday.....details are on Michael's website. Then to top it all off, one of my Stepford Wife neighbors gave my name to a local author (I didn't even know my little town *had* them!); he called me and I'm currently editing his first novel. Michael has offered to create a business website for me, so when it's ready for viewing, I'll send out the address. (Oh, but for now -- the name of my business is *the editor's mark*.) Anyway, I just wanted to share that with y'all.....and if you know of anyone who might need the services of a hard-working nit-picking freelance editor, send 'em my way, will ya? ;-) Jill :D - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Sep 1998 22:50:18 -0700 From: eric_antos@juno.com Subject: (harbinger) To Jill D.
