It was hot, and horrible. We were all handed really nice lilith fair programs though, I don't know why they gave them out for free, but they are cool. I was just excited about seeing paula cole! So we finally got in to thunderbird stadium, we decided instead of watching the small stages, we would go find a place right up front at main stage so we could stay there for the entire show... WELL, we found a spot RIGHT up against the gate at the very front! Nobody in front of us... we were leaning against the gate... it was incredible. we stayed there the entire day, and it was really cool to see all the artists up so close at such a huge venue (20,000+ people!). The problem was that everyone near the front was sitting down... we didn't want to sit down, and neither did the few people beside us... so there were about 6 of us who didn't want to sit, but we were blocking the view for others... this caused major problems, and we got in a huge fight with these people (it was so fun!) but what it comes down to is this: we may have been inconsiderate for standing, but the concert is GENERAL ADMISSION... that means we can stand if we want - the music was LOUD and fun, and we wanted to dance around! also, if they wanted to sit there are plenty of seats in the bleachers... we got in huge screaming fits with people, and they were throwing stuff at us... if they had been polite about it we may have sat down (if we did sit we couldn't see because the stage was over 6 feet high, and we were right in front) but they were rude, and they swore at us, and it was just stupid. the bouncers were totally on our side too - later when everyone did stand up the bouncers said we should scream out "I told you so!" it was funny. anyways, slowly our crowd grew, and by the end of mee'shell everyone was standing up (even the stupid people who were yelling at us) so it was good. we had so much fun... anyways, on to the music: first up was lisa loeb, and she played for about a half hour. I hated her last year, but this year she had a band, and she was loud, and really good... I enjoyed her show. this is what she played: Bad Day (?) Do you Sleep Not what I want (?) Truthfully Taffy Stay Falling in love (with sarah mclachlan) I Do The best part was Taffy... it really rocked... and she was joined on stage by sarah mclachlan for falling in love which was nice... lisa looked cool, and she played guitar through the whole thing. at one point she broke a string, and her band kept going and she just sang... they brought her out a new guitar and she grabbed it and started playing. it was cool. Next was diana krall, and at this point we stood up (everyone else was sitting) so we could see. Diana krall is really light jazz music, but she is really really good, and I've seen her in concert before. Her music is sort of "sit down" music, but it was really funky too... she does not suit a huge venue like this though, she fits better in a small theatre, cause she is very subtle and quiet. she plays the piano and is joined by an upright bass player, and a guitarist... this is what she played: I'm an errand girl for rhythem is you is my baby I've got you under my skin Lost mind Shufuffa on the side Peel me a grape Route 66 Her set was only 7 songs, but still lasted 45 minutes, cause most of them had long instrumental solos in them. her voice is very low and sultry, and "Under my skin" was just beautiful. My favorite though is "peel me a grape" and she kept looking over at us cause we were the only ones standing, and she was smiling. it was good. Peel me a grape was supposed to be her last song, but then she mouthed something to her guitar player, and he looked confused, then they started route 66. it was a fun closer. everyone was into it. After this we kept fighting with the people around us... Me'shell Ndegeocello was next, and she came out and said "If yawl want to rise up and enjoy the music there is nothing wrong with that" and our little standing group cheered! The whole audiance was standing by the end. I'm not familiar with her music, but she was very soulfull and funky... her band was amazing... and she played the bass really well. the only song I knew was her closing song: If dat's your boyfriend. It was really fun. we were all dancing and singing along. I usually hate when people sing along at concerts, but I decided to have fun and go wild this time rather than watch and get pissed off at people around me for singing along. Now the moment I had been waiting for: PAULA COLE! This was my fourth time seeing her in one years time, and she was just incredible as usual. it started to get dark when she came out and by the end of her set it was pitch black out, which made her light show incredible. the audiance went WILD for her... we were all jumping around and dancing (not a mosh pit) and cheering her on. she really suits a large venue because she is so intense on stage. she has a new bass player though who is IMO not as good as mark. here is her set: Throwing Stones Mississippi Me Where have all the cowboys gone Jolene Feelin' Love War I don't want to wait Hitler's Brothers Where do I begin? She came on looking so sexy, she was wearing tight blue jeans, and a short cut baby tee shirt that said "girl pride" on it. she looked beautiful. Throwing stones was good, but I've heard it better, and we could barely hear because of everyone screaming (including us). Mississippi was incredible as usual - so loud and dark... the audiance went wild again. Then she left her piano (she never touched the piano again for the whole rest of the set) and sang ME, which was better that I've ever heard it - she was really holding her notes at the end of the song, and it was so emotional. the girl beside us was in tears. then where have all the cowboys gone.... our little standing group was doing all these actions, and paula came RIGHT up in front of us and smiled at as... then she said "you go have a beer" and gave the finger. Jolene: beat box was fabulous. I love this song. THEN came a suprise... I didn't know she was doing this at her lilith shows... they rolled out a little keyboard and a stool, and the band started feelin' love. I thought they would cut it down cause usually live this lasts over 10 minutes... I looked at my watch as it started. the whole thing lasted *14* minutes! she started off walking around stage talking low and dirty into the microphone... then raced over to the keyboard, and started the song... the guitar solo was particularilly long tonight... paula danced at the keyboard as kevin played. then the wind-down. she starts low and she was singing dirty again, then she keeps building up till the end of the song she was just wailing into the microphone... it was incredible! she really drew out the end.... "make me feel.... feeeeel.... feeel.... lo... lo... LOVE" it was so cool. this was one of the hilights of the whole night. Next she brought out a whole slew of musicians to help her, and they did a cover of bob marley's "war". because of all the jamming going on this one lasted over 15 minutes! these two songs were a half an hour together! war was so cool... she started by singing it and dancing around the stage, then she danced as the band jammed for quite awhile, then she went to the drums and started tapping on things, then she went to the keyboard and played a few light chords along with the guitar player... she did the coolest thing, she got more and more intense, and started singing; stood up, and threw her stool away, and she stood up and played the keyboard and sung! It was so great. she then brought on Angelique Kidjo to help her finish off the song, and they sung together it was really something. green spinning lights on this one. now the extra band members left the stage and paula and her band played I don't want to wait. it was strange because she did NOT play the piano in this one like she usually does! She danced around like she did in me. it was pretty good, but I wasn't paying too much attention becuase some girl near us got punched out and a big fight happened and people around us were getting pulled out of the audiance. her last song was her best. Feelin' love was great, but this was was magical. I've seen her do it so many times, but it just hit me so hard this time... "hitler's brothers". she had an extra drummer on for this. The lights on stage were just magnificant, and her voice was so powerful, and the band was so loud! when she did the whistling, and she dances and her movements and the lights... wow. I can't even explain it. it was something you just had to experience. she just blew everyone away. She ended by bashing on the bass drum. and I danced and danced... oooooh it was good! Last was sarah mclachlan, and of course the audiance went wild. I really enjoyed her (not half as much as paula) a lot more than I did last year. she looked beautiful (I ususally find her very ugly) and she wasn't as sappy as she was last year... in fact she did the coolest thing: this was her set: Last Dance (played in the dark as they came on stage) Sweet Surrender Witness Elsewhere (with Paula Cole) Angel Ice Cream Black and White Building a Mystery Posession - -encore- Oh Canada Adia What's going on (with all performers) Sweet surrender is not a good opener IMO. I prefered last year when she opened with hold on. buy witness worked really well as a second song... the audiance loved it, and it was really loud. Elsewhere was really good cause paula cole joined her and did an incredible solo at the end and the audiance went wild again. Angel was next and it is one of my favorites... she played it alone at the piano which was really nice. a single white spotlight was on her. beautiful. last year she stood as her piano player played it for her. this was much better. at the end her voice cracked, and she laughed and started the line again... it was really neat. Then this beat started and they rolled the drummer onstage as he was playing, sarah grabbed her guitar, and they did ice cream together. it was really nice... but I think it makes a better last song rather than in the middle of the set because it's her husband and it's a duet type deal. then she played black and white which I did not hear her do before and it was really great! She sung it a lot better than on the album. much louder, and less breathy. then building a mystery which was good, and possesion - the lights for this were fantastic, and it was a great performance. I love this song. When she came back for her encore I was expecting ADIA, but she suprised us all with the most touching moment of her set. her band sat down, and she sat at the piano and sang (and played) the national anthem for us. She just started singing "oh canada... our home and native land" and the audiance cheered. of course she sang it sarahishly but it was beautiful, and it was so sweet. when I thought about how it was the last lilith fair, and she is canadian, and we were in beautiful vancouver (the city where I live) it was just really appropriate, and I thought it was so cool that she did that... it shows she is proud to be canadian. she didn't plan on doing it either because in between words she whispered "I'm just making this up" as in she was playing it by ear... you could tell cause it took her a few seconds to find some of the chords. it was my favorite part of her set. then she did adia which was nice. all the perforers came on and closed with "what's going on" which I think is a terrible song, but I still think it was neat to see about 70 people on stage all jamming together. really neat. So we met a bunch of great people, and had a wonderful time: much more fun than last year, plus we were right up front, so it was cool. I'll definatly be there next year. one thing that made me mad was that at the end of the show they were handing out postcards that advertized tori's sept 9th vancouver show, and people were grabbing them and throwing them on the ground! AS we left we saw HUNDREDS all over the road! So I ran around picking them all up... I have about 90 of them... matt - -- Matt Presidente MY HOMEPAGE: http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Hills/3745/me.html **~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~** I have to learn to let you crash down - -tori amos- **~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~** - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 1 Sep 1998 21:12:38 -0400 From: "Miss Procrastination" Subject: (harbinger) Paula on DVD?
