I guess I never thought about it too much, but now that it's on my mind . . . It seems to me that the first two lines - hitchhiking and cross-country - indicate that the young couple did indeed start out unconventionally, seeking adventure. Then abruptly they found themselves giving in to the urge to merge, to become more like their neighbors and do what was expected - had to raise a family. This abruptness is reinforced by the way the lyrics just jump right from the images of freedom to domesticity. I always found that a little jarring and never knew why but now i do. But I think it works, that it's necessary for Paula to show that they started out free and then change, rather than just wish for something they never had. Then when she sings Sweet freedom it's that much more poignant. Oh and Paula and Hanson? Yikes! I remember when Big Country first came to America they were opening for Hall and Oates. I wanted to see them so bad I was willing to pay H and O prices, but the show got cancelled. I'm not sure I'm ready for Paula in an arena - unless she's the headliner. Even then, too many yahoos. Take the beer-swilling and spilling jerks in Cincinatti and multiply it by 200 and hoo boy - no thanks. Theaters is the way to go - 3000 - 5000 seats.
