It's that we (members ofmodern culture, Americans in particular) are so fascinated with technology that we forget that things like computers are meant to be tools, not authoritative sources. Is it really easier or wiser to boot up a computer that cost a couple of thousand dollars, log onto the internet, and ask a question of a random group of people of varying degrees of proficiency in various areas of knowledge - or to open a $25 dictionary of other reference book? It bothers me because you haven't learned anything even though you found the answer to your question. Which is more self-satisfying - getting someone to tell you the answer, or learning how to find the answer yourself? And please don't quote this question and post it to the net, adding, "Does anybody know the answer to this question?" I'm glad the net didn't get called "the information superhighway" - as we're living in the misinformation age. You still have to learn how to figure out problems for yourself, or you are doomed to a life of indecision, based on information and opinions gathered further down the food chain. When you use a calculator you still have to be able to calculat well enough in your head to decide if the calculator is correct. People put way too much trust in mechanical and electrical devices. Is a song you hear on the radio inherently better than one played by a street singer or around a campfire? It wasn't long ago that if you wanted to hear music you either had to play it yourself or go somewhere to hear it live. Just about every house - even poor households - had a piano in the parlor, or a guitar or violin, or soneone who could sing. Are we really making progress in this consumer-oriented society? I fear we're heading towrd a day when we won't need to know or remember anything - just how to get a computer to find out what you want to know, and where you saved the data.Whata sorry day that will be. Please don't ask me to explain why I feel this way. Figure it out for yourself. It's nice that people on this list feel open enough to put almost any question out there. I hope whoever started thisthread - with an innocent question followed by an off-handed remark - hasn't been intimidated to the point of leaving. That isn't what we're about. We're using this forum, among other things, to elevate our consciousness and otherwise evolve, and that often takes more effort than asking general questions. Do some research, investigate, play a hunch, interpret, extrapolate, cross-reference, and contribute!! I'm a little surprised this thread has gone on so long. I hope people are learning from this process. Peace JourneyBear PS" BTW Chris - While I do miss Kenn's knowledgeable posts, I never cared for his need to be the ultimate authority on Paula and always have the last word. He seemed to actually resent anyone being better informed than he, even on a piece of trivia, rather than accept information from another source. If that's the package deal, i'll do without it. Welcome him back - sure; do without him - just fine. My 2 1/2 - hey, where's the damn cents key? Have we all lost our cents-es? ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - ------------------------------ Harbinger Public Service Announcement: Emergency contraceptives are methods of preventing pregnancy *after* unprotected sexual intercourse. (*smile*) Nietzche's Eyes is the very song that attracted me to Paula in the first place. I HATED Cowboys, but i bought the CD for IDWTW. I totally thought she was crazy (especially after hearing feelin' love and Throwing stones - 2 of my favorites now.) I gave it a few more spins (and started listening to the lyrics...) and was astounded. She wasn't the normal Top 40 MMMMMMM-Boppin' bimbo. I had wrongfully pegged cowboys for some backwards right-winged antedeluvent anthem, and not the sarcastic, feminist (GASP!), synical song that it was. Paula's ability to be an intelegent artist and beautifully translage her knowlege and poetry into gorgeous songs drew me into her music. (Plus, i agree with most of her politics.) Anyway, thank goddess that Paula's music is "smart music." (She might trick some of the wal-mart shoppin', Furr's eatin', nintendo playin' (Povie) masses into actually thinking.) If only i had "discovered" her sooner.
