She wrote the lyrics. The music was composed by Louiguy . Edith was born rue de Belleville in Paris in december 1915. She died in Paris in october 1963. "La Vie en Rose" means "The Life in Pink" with can be effectivly translated by "The Good Life" (Steve's contribution). It is a romantic song about the love shared by 2 persons. Edith Piaf had a very hard life and the song is about the fact she likes to be loved. - --- Lyrics: LA VIE EN ROSE (Piaf/Louiguy) Des yeux qui font baiser les miens, un rire qui se perd sur sa bouche Voilà le portrait, sans retouche, de l'homme auquel j'appartiens Quand il me prend dans ses bras Il me parle tout bas Je vois la vie en rose Il me dit des mots d'amour Ces mots de tous les jours Si ça m'fait quelque chose Il est entre dans mon coeur Une part de bonheur Dont je connais la cause C'est lui pour moi, moi pour lui dans la vie Il me l'a dit l'a jure pour la vie Et dès que je l'aperçois Alors je sens en moi mon coeur qui bat Des nuits d'amour ne plus en finir Un grand bonheur qui prend sa place Des ennuis, des chagrins, des phrases Heureux, heureux à en mourir Quand il me prend dans ses bras Il me parle tout bas Je vois la vie en rose Il me dit des mots d'amour Des mots de tous les jours Et ca m'fait quelque chose Il est entre dans mon coeur Une part de bonheur Je reconnais la cause C'est toi pour moi, moi pour toi dans la vie Tu me l'as dit t'l'as jure pour la vie Et des que je t'apercois Alors je sens en moi mon coeur qui bat - --- About Paula Cole and "La Vie en Rose": Paula said in an interview for SWF3 (german TV) that she wanted to sing a song in the native language in every country she's touring. But, she does not have the time to learn so many songs. She first start with "La Vie en Rose" because it's a worldwide hit from the 50's. - --- To answer to Kara: This song has nothing to do with the movie "Ma Vie en Rose" (My life in pink). The movie has been made in 1997 and takes only near the title to joke with it. - --- Have Fun chris - ------------------------------ Harbinger Public Service Announcement: Emergency contraceptives are methods of preventing pregnancy *after* unprotected sexual intercourse. I'm pretty sure she wrote it too. The phrase itself is equivalent to "the good life" in English, but has become so closely identified with the song that the artwork you mention probably refers to the song as much as to the idea. Why Paula does the song is anyone's guess. Mine is that it appeals to her romantic side, and also gives her a chance to camp it up and clown around a bit, giving the audience (and herself) some comic relief. My two cents JourneyBear >> They had Edith Piaf in Saving Private Ryan! I wont give too much away, but when they were waiting for the Germans in france, Edith was playing, and they were saying how depressing it was and how they want to slit there wrists, lol. I wonder if that could be like a little joke saying how today's women singers are depressing or something. It just made me think it could be like a little joke. I dont know. Anyway..bout it! The sound and audience problems people reported at recent shows were not apparent here (aside from a few impatient Ben Harper fans who did quiet down after being asked). Paula was in good spirits, smiling a lot, and gave a fine performance. Here's the set list: Superfine (a funky new song - second time performed) Cowgirls Carmen Me Jolene Feeling Love War I Don't Want To Wait Hitler's Brothers No Bethlehem or Happy Home but I don't mind. She stuck to her allotted time and no encore - this was what every act did. She wore a low-cut slinky black see-through full-length dress, with a beige slip underneath. She didn't have a piano but instead an electronic keyboard - - very effective especially on War. In the middle of that song they broke down to just Paula playing chords and Jay playing drum flourishes. In one of the coolest, subtlest displays of instrumental technique I have ever witnessed - and there have been some - Jay repeated a simple riff on the high hat and faded it, imitating the echo/fade effect used so often in reggae. Doing it live, with only his nimbly controlled brushes, was so cool. But back to Paula. She made a few changes - Richard Gates on bass (he's toured with Dar Williams and others), no tambourine on Cowgirls, no piano on IDWTW. The biggest change was the absence of Phil! I asked the soundman where he was and he said, "Phil is history." Anyone know what happened? The sound was fine, but I miss Phil's presence. Just knowing someone that capable and charming and devoted to Paula was in her corner made a difference. I wish him well wherever he goes, and hope the new guy does as well. BTW, apparently HORDE allows taping - venues may vary - so there were people with nice rigs set up, though only one guy was taping the whole show, most just taped Blues Traveler. So i patched into this guy's system, and am quite pleased with the results. Just some brief notes on the rest of the show. Alana Davis was OK, but her vocal mike was badly mixed, a little distorted, so i couldn't hear her words. Barenaked Ladies were enjoyable but not compelling, and though their humor was delightful, musically they seemed more subdued, less idiosyncratic - a little disappointing. They still got the biggest crowd response, a lot of people singing along. Ben Harper was fine, a cut or two above what I've been hearing on the radio. Blues Traveler were much better live than what the singles I've heard led me to expect. The only second stage act I caught in person was Government Mule, and they were quite good. The event was run very smoothly, with no - I repeat, no - overlap between mainstage and second stage. Also, the sound from the second stage was played over the mainstage speakers. Lilith could pick up some pointers. ou are planning to go, the first six people to bring the correct answers to the trivia quiz in the program (page 19)to the HORDE/AWARE CD store get a free compilation CD. Here are the answers (I was too late) so you can run right over when you get in: 1) Horizons of Rock Developing Everywhere; six years - this is the seventh (trick question?) 2) Big Chops 3) Dad's Big Sandwich 4) France and Australia 5) From Good Homes, Hootie and the Blowfish, Matchbox 20 (better check at the store) 6) Frost And a big merci beaucoup to Christian for the info and lyrics of La Vie En Rose. I will try to translate them for the list when I get a chance. When I've seen English versions of songs originally written in other languages they are often not literally translated but rather liberally transformed, almost into an entirely different song. That's all for now - and how!
