Holy Christ, ugggghhhh...." Scary thought, but I know exactly what you mean. I work in an upscale mall, and when it's slow I spend a lot of time people watching. It can get pretty frightening! Then Kara wrote: "And it's not like Paula had much of a choice when she had to decide whether or not to allow an edited version to be made. Wal-Mart is one of, if not, thee biggest retail seller of all CDs in the country, so she could either miss out on getting her music out there to millions of people, or not allow the edited version to be made. Nice choice, huh? ....And lets go back in time and change our mind on this one, and when you get back to July 29, 1998, there just may be an empty space on the mantle where that Grammy once stood." Considering that Paula didn't really seem to care about the Grammy at all (i mean if i were her, i'd be offended to be nominated as a new artist), I think she had plenty of free will to decide whether or not to release a 'clean version'. But the way I see it is, it's Paula's music and she can do whatever she wants with it :) take care everyone! john ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - ------------------------------ Harbinger Public Service Announcement: Emergency contraceptives are methods of preventing pregnancy *after* unprotected sexual intercourse. I do. But I feel pretty stongly about this topic, so I'm gonna say my piece. Delete if the CLEAN THIS post holds no interest to you. You know how Paula laughed at people missing the irony of WHATCG? I think some people missed the point of my post "Clean this." I stated that I thought it was ironic to edit "motherfucker" then leave in "bitch in heat" "touch my ass" "guilt ridden Catholic shit" and the whole of "Feelin Love". I think it is funny that there is a scale of what is acceptable. (i.e, read the lyrics to family friendly Janet Jackson's old pop hit "if"...or the new "what about..." aren't those on sale at WallMart as well?) I did say it was good to have options...and Jason said, "Great how Walmart takes away people's choices and then gets defenders saying "It's great to have options." Orwell would be proud." Unless WallMart is the only option (it's not...it's just the most convenient or cost efficient option to many people in the US), the Orwelian analogy (I assume Jason meant the Big Brother mind control) does not work. (I still don't think the analogy works even if the situation was the same as in "1984" since an author who is writing a cautionary fable is usually not thrilled when what he has written comes to pass. An example is Steven King's grief at murders that mirrored one of the plots of his book he wrote as Richard Bachman.) There are no Wallmart's in Europe yet....I said nothing to support that chain. There is no need for Walmart to give a "huge notice" that an album has been edited. Every edited album is labeled. And like I mentioned before, I think it is really odd that the version is identical to the non edited version except for one word and some people are acting like the entire album has been raped. Remember too, that Paula edited herself when she sang throwing stones live at a free concert. BUT I WANT TO GET OFF THIS STUPID WALMART TOPIC! I will have to go to a Wallmart next time I am in the states to see what people are getting so crazy about. Is it run by a church group or something? Isn't it just a chain store? That place seems to bring out a lot of raging feelings in this list! Anyway, to me, it is rather closeminded to assume that someone who has a different opinion than you is stupid or not enlightened. I could be wrong, but I felt the personal dig from our listowner was unnecessarily condescending. Whether you agree with me or not, I don't think you can say that I follow the masses blindly. I try to express my points with examples and reasons why I feel the way I do. I try to research things and make my own decisions about what I believe. (Which is one reason I complained about the birth control footer at the bottom of the Harbinger posts...isn't the list owner taking away MY choice? Every time I post to this list, an advertisement for a product I do not know enough about to be pro or con about appears under my name. I reasonably suggested it be posted once to the list to give the subscribers a chance to determine for themselves if they want to learn more about the product. But the feeling I got was that I was "closeminded" for trying to suppress an "openminded" idea. Would you feel the same way if the footer that appeared under your post advertised a church group or a multilevel marketing group? But the footer is still there. I got over it because I would rather be a part of this list and not agree with something than to deny myself the pleasure I get from reading all of your comments because of a difference of opinion.) I still stand by what I said that Throwing Stones is written and performed well enough with enough rage that the motherf at the end of the song is not needed to convey the message. To me, the "liar" is much more cutting than "motherfucker", but it's Paula's song...not mine. So it really doesn't matter what I think about it. Also, Because there is a "radio edit" of both "Me" and "I Don't Want to Wait" does that mean our choices are taken away and the songs have been CENSORED and our choices have been taken away. (If we buy the single and not the whole CD, we are not hearing the full song!) No. The songs were edited to be more accessable to radio playlists and formats. And from an earlier post, I believe that Phil said that both "edits" have remixed drums. We now have two different versions of the songs to enjoy. The "editing" has in fact yeilded more product, allowed Paula a better chance to get on the radio, and allowed more people to be exposed to her music. Hooray. Hol said, "plain and simple, don't like it, don't listen to it" Though I don't think she meant it the way I did, that was my point of the whole "options" subject. If you like Paula, but don't like that word, you can have your cake and eat it too with the edited version. Again, don't like it, you don't have to listen to it. As for Povie's comments....he makes me laugh and sent me the amazing DiscPlay program, so I can't get too bent outta shape. But, stereotyping everyone who has some conservative viewpoints is as dangerous as the stereotyping many conservatives do to others. (The irony being that many of the "Right and Morals" who worship warm and fuzzy Queen of Nice Rosie O would die if they knew she was a lesbian.) As for the Sunflowers comment (Yeah...too bad Van Gogh didn't give us a choice between Sunflowers or No Sunflowers....for I hate yellow. Povie)... I think Walmart stocks the Van Gogh Sunflower print with the flowers in baby blue, cherry red, and Avon Pink so the artwork can match your room better. I know you can't do that, so I hope you went - it was fabulous. Gillian Welch & David Rawlings charmed everyone in the midday heat with their so-retro-it's-nouveau country/singer-songwriter style. Local country-rocker Cheri Knight did a powerful trio set that showed what a compelling talent she is. Headliners Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas and Koko Taylor were pretty good, though Koko has even less of a vocal range than Stevie Nicks - but she sure can work it, and her band cooked. Add to this balloon rides and fireworks . . . well keep your eye peeled for next year. Meanwhile, I'd say go to Northampton. The Iron Horse is one of the best small clubs in the Northeast, if not the country, and features a wide varuety of music almost every night of the year, usually reasonably priced, and good food and beer selection, too. They have a website which I can never find, but you should find listings in the Valley Advocate. When you go pick up their in-house magazine which has two months' worth of listings. Also in NoHo and recently reopened under the same management is Pearl Street, where better-known acts will be booked. Lucinda Williams will be there Friday 8/7 - not to be missed. The charming (small) vegetariann cafe Fire & Water has music almost every night, and many a rising artist has played there. Those three should keep you plenty busy. Also keep on the lookout for the Wendell Town Hall - it often gets rented out by bands, and there is also a coffeehouse there. Happy happy joy joy!! Subject: (harbinger) War cover Someone on this list (JourneyBear?) mentioned why Paula is now doing the Bob Marley song War, but I don't remember what was said. Anyone able to fill me in? She did a terrific rendition of it at the Hampton Beach concert Tues. night. There was also a picture of Marley on display at front of stage with candles around it. I know Marley is one of her favorite inspirations, but has something happened recently? For example, I know why she opened with "Working Class Hero" as it is going to be on the Lennon tribute album. This was the first time I have seen her do Edith Piaf's "La Vie en Rose"- loved the campy costume, right down to the black heels. Up until this finale, she had done the whole concert in barefeet, wearing a very attractive, long black lace dress over a white slip. It was a hot night, the place was not air-conditioned and the band was sweating (Paula mentioned this by the second song), but they in no way cut back, delivering an energetic, full show- first encore Wait & Jolene. She didn't do Carmen or Ordinary this time, and as much as I like both of them, it was great to see the new covers. Great concert. I don't know how Paula and her band do it, but they just keep getting better. I have to share my joy with you all. I am a huge music fan and I buy a ton of music. Anyways I went with my friend to the pawnshop yesterday so he could borrow some cash, while he took care of his business I thought- Hey I will take a look at the CD's and see if I can find anything I am looking for. Well, for about 4 years now I have been looking for a hard-to-find almost obselete CD by a band called theMEN they were a big thing back in New Mexico on the radio and I think I am the one person who made them big there. In 1995 I was in a used CD store in StLouis and I found the CD by theMEN and silly me I gave it to my boyfriend at the time and I kept the cassette tape of it. After we ended the relationship I regretted not keeping the CD and I began a search for it. I tried to find a copy by order at Hasting's and several places but no one could locate it in the warehouses. I was becoming desperate, I even emailed one of the guys from the band in hopes he could give me some direction with no help. Anyways, I FOUND a copy of the CD at the pawnshop and in my eyes it is more than worth a million times its weight in gold or anything else. I also managed to pick up SourPie from Holly McNarland and the DO Something CD that Taco Bell sold a few years back. It cost me $10 for all 3 CD's but I would have been willing to pay anything for this theMEN CD. For all of you who have never thought of searching a pawnshop for CD's here is a recomendation from a very satisfied buyer. I found some amazing treasures in that time, stuff that will nnever be released on CD. What brings this to mind is that I found at our Salvation Army store some Kate Bush picture disks - two interviews, two concerts - for something like $5 each. They knew they were worth something, but even then that was a bargain. Happy hunting!
