This year was pretty good but I have to say that it wasn't quite the same for my wife and I as it was a bit more "commercial" in the look and feel and the line-up wasn't what we were spoiled by last year. Natalie Merchant was really good and of course Sarah was in top form but the rest was just okay... IMHO. > I'm also wondering what the music scene is like up there in the Far > North. I'd guess that with the low population density and high costs > that a lot of acts don't venture up there. Well, I wouldn't go as far as saying we are the far north, as I was born and raised in arctic Alaska... but the Seattle - Portland - San Francisco music pipeline is still very active. Now that "pop" music has been coronated as the "next big thing" by the struggling major label A and R folks -- and the Pacific NW grunge scene is fading, the shift has been to a more post-punk/pop flavor. Groups like Everclear and The Dandy Warhols (both of Portland,) The Cherry Poppin' Daddies (Eugene - where I live,) the ever-present and newly pop-flavored Pearl Jam (Seattle) ... plus a ton of really talented folks that are making the west coast circuit appear on a near daily basis in our community. The Gorge is a great place to go for concerts, open and airy -- but the temperatures in the late summer evenings can still go well into the eighties and nineties. You should make a trip sometime and see what we do "way up here" :-} c ya - ---------------------------------------------------------- Larry Sievers mailto:tech@chukchi.com - ---------------------------------------------------------- "Alaska Arts, Crafts, Multimedia, Video Production & More" http://www.chukchi.com http://www.touch-alaska.com - ------------------------------ Harbinger Public Service Announcement: Emergency contraceptives are methods of preventing pregnancy *after* unprotected sexual intercourse. From Thursday, July 16th, through Wednesday, July 22nd, I've been to five concerts......so here's the beginning of my musical adventures...... On Thursday, I flew to Philadelphia to see Jennifer Kimball and Deanna Kirk (a personal friend of mine -- dontcha love that name-dropping?) at the Tin Angel. My date was Denise Thomas (accompanied by her friend James). We met at Serrano's (the restaurant downstairs from the Tin Angel) and had dinner with Jennifer Prybutok. Dana Wagner joined us right after dinner and came upstairs with us for the show. As I walked into the club, I was welcomed by Deanna's trumpet player, Todd, who remembered me from their Cincinnati performance this past December. I talked with him for awhile as the rest of my group found seats near the front of the venue (a very small, intimate setting). Then Deanna came up and we sat down together and talked for awhile. I gave her a CD by Canadian artist Andrea Florian and a tape of one of Sara Craig's (whose voice reminds me of Deanna's) albums. I also gave her a tape of Lynne Saner's CD and one of my mix tapes which includes Deanna's own song "If Not For Love." Jennifer Kimball was walking around the club and soon took the stage. She has a cute sense of humor and kept saying, "this next song is *** from my new CD 'Veering From the Wave', which you can't have tonight." Such a tease! She performed (not in order) "Kissing In the Car," "An Ordinary Soldier," "Veering From the Wave," and one or two others, all the while kidding around with the audience in her quiet way. I had requested "It's A Long Way Home," which she saved to perform as her encore. When Jennifer was finished, there was a short break before Deanna came onstage. Deanna's performance inlcuded "No Ghosts Allowed," "Where Are You Now," "I Want It Now," "Carousel," "When Love Comes Around," "If Not For Love," "Ballad Of the Small Cafe" (which she said was written after her restaurant, *Deanna's*, was destroyed by fire), and "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch." She also sang a couple of jazz standards, the names of which I can't recall. Between sets, Joel Colburn had joined our table......and I also met Henry from the Jonatha Brooke list . After Deanna's set, most people left, but our little group hung around to schmooze with Jennifer and Deanna. As I was talking with Deanna, I was overcome my a rush of generosity and gave her the Lilith Fair pendant I had bought last year (yeah, I was wearing it at the time). She is sooooo gracious and friendly and appreciative of support. And for those of you in the NYC area, she mentioned that she's signing the lease on her new restaurant (also to be called *Deanna's*), and that it should be open by the early fall of this year. I got Todd and Patrick to sign my CD liners....and we joked around with them for a good long while. Todd is a riot! Patrick drew a picture with crayons on a placemat and gave it to Denise and there were plenty of hugs and photos taken all around. At one point, Jennifer and Deanna were back by the bar checking out each other's cds (they'd never heard each other before), and they exchanged an album with each other. Jennifer had given Deanna a copy of "Veering From the Wave," so in a bold move (which is just my way -- some people actually find it endearing), I asked Jennifer if I could have a copy, too. She said, "sure, i'll go out to my car and get you one!" So she brought it back to me and signed it with "For Jill -- thanks for the chitchat!" After 30 - 40 minutes of chatting with everyone, the group broke up and we went our separate ways. Then to make a long scary story short, Denise and James and I drove down to South Street (I think), and went to Fat Tuesday's and a very short visit to Tower Records -- my very first visit to Tower in real life! It was nearly midnight and they were just about to lock the door to the store, but we pleaded and I said that I'd come all the way from Ohio just to shop at Tower and that I would probably spend $200 if they let us in. So they took pity on usand said we could come in for two minutes; I ran around trying to find treasures and shouting out artist names for one of the guys to look up on the computer. We ended up being able to stay for about 15 minutes.....but I could only buy about $90 worth of CDs.....realizing that I had several duplicates of albums I had already ordered over the internet. (*sigh* I do that *far* too much lately!) After checking out and thanking the Tower guys (I don't really mean *checking out the Tower guys*), we departed and drove back to Denise's house to spend the night. One very long ride home for an old woman who really doesn't care for rap music! And so to sleep until tomorrow's Lilith Fair in Camden, New Jersey...... I thought from your footer/signature that you were in Alaska. It's been 25 years or more but Eugene is the farthest up the west coast I ever got. There are a coupke of singer/songwriters out that way you should check out. Based in Seattle is Erin Corday, who mixes Brazilian rhythms into her style, very effectively. Her voice has a way of getting right to your heart. Three albums out on Waterbug Records, including a new live one, "Painted Door." Also closer to you in Portland is Anne Weiss, former Maine resident, whose soulful somnewhat raspy voice conveys a wide range of emotions. Old friend Dar Williams contributes vocals to one song on each of her self-released albums. Both are well worth seeking out, if you aren't already familiar with them. I know they both tried to get into Lilith Fair but didn't. Erin is a great choice for a Paula opener (obligatory PC content) Peace JourneyBear ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - ------------------------------ Harbinger Public Service Announcement: Emergency contraceptives are methods of preventing pregnancy *after* unprotected sexual intercourse. Looking forward to your review. It's almost a foregone conclusion it'll be on my Top Ten List. It will inevitably be compared to Jonatha Brooke's work, but it stands on its own quite well. I'm a little surprised at how similar her voice is to Jonatha's, which explains why they blended so well as The Story. Her album is more centered around string instruments than Jonatha's, due partly to JB being produced by husband /keyboardist Alain Mallet (not one given to gossip, but they've split). BTW, it sounds like it was a solo gig. I saw her with her full band two months ago - the same band as on the album, including Lucy Kaplansky on vocals and Mr. Texture Marc Shulman on guitar - and that was a real treat. Looking forward to the next installment of "The Week That Was." What is BMI? I figure whatever it is, the reason there are so many songs listed that we've never heard is because once you write a song, if you have any intention of recording it or not, you'd better get it published under your name to protect yourself from copyright infringement. We'll be lucky to hear 1 out of 20 attributed to Paula. In fact, those of you who got to hear "Free", consider yourselves very lucky. Phil told us that it's a song she wrote in the 80's and that she's 'bagged it' once again; so it's unlikely that we'll be hearing it again! Oh well, it's well worth trading that for seeing her do the Marley cover she's been doing!!! ("War"). She does this awesome little rasta dance!!! And if you haven't seen her yet, do it soon!!!! After these festivals (Horde & Lilith) and opening for Matchbox 20 she probably won't tour again for 8-9 months to work on the next album (according to Phil). Get your Paula fix now!
