Just wanted to mention quickly that the Seventeen article is mostly a retread of previously divulged Paula information, but one bit of news from the piece is that Paula is going to be starring in one of Seyi's films. I'm hoping that his flik makes it to the New Directors Film Series that is held at the Museum Of Modern Art each year here in New York. That'd be terribly cool for Seyi *and* Paula. I'm also very happy to see that she's giving the acting a chance, too. And, now..... ladies and gelatin.... it is at this time that I will be bidding all of you a fond adieu, at least for the forseeable future. I've been subbed to the list and have been a fairly prolific poster for over two years now, but the list has been getting slower and slower as the months have been going by and Paula's touring is quickly drawing to a close. The new album isn't due out until sometime next year. I'm moving into a new apartment in a new town in just three short weeks. It's summer and I have lots of work to do yet on my tan and on the Paula website I've been working on for what seems like eons now. I don't have anywhere near enough time to get through one (let alone all) of Steve Bornstein's novella-posts. In short, life, in general, is more engaging right now for me than the list, so I'm going into deep lurk. I'm not unsubbing. I still want to be able to tune in now and then to see what Paula is doing, but I won't be posting for a few months. Thanks to all of you for contributing so much to the list and for being a very cool group of people with whom to talk and hang out with when I've had the chance to hook up with you in person at Paula's shows. Despite some recent snipings from the peanut gallery about all of us being too concerned with political correctness and that we are all basically limp-wristed, mealy-mouthed milquetoasts, I still maintain that Harbinger is a very cool list just the way it is and I hope that you will all work to keep it that way. Those judgments came from subscribers who simply haven't known us long enough to realize that we are one of the most intellectual and informative lists out there today. Forgive them, they know not of what they speak even though they certainly seem to enjoy the way it sounds. I hope you all enjoy the rest of this year. Miss me terribly, as I'm sure I'll miss most of you. I can never be replaced, naturally, but I'm sure my heavy-petting buddy and partner-in-slime, Povie, will do much to entertain and delight you until I return. And, certainly, my thanks go to Jason Greshes, our benign dictator, for keeping Harbinger alive and well. And, finally, all my best to our girl, Paula. You're beautiful and you kick ass, baby! Thanks for everything and congratulations on your breakthrough to the masses. I'm looking forward to what you have in store. And to Paula, Phil, Jay and the rest of the band and crew.... thanks to all of you for all you've given to me and the rest of the fans during this tour. You've done so much to make sure we've all enjoyed the hell out of you doing what you do so well and through your kindness and generosity have touched many of us in ways that you'll likely never know. Mad props and much love to all of you. Until we meet again, Harbingeranians.... Peace. Subject: (harbinger) Lilith and Poo-Poo So I see the mail's piling up. Sorry I haven't posted. I went to the country for a weekend and heard some GOOD music. Even the small stages had some good talent. Imani Coppola wore a bright fuschia wig and did some hilarious stage antics, like putting oranges down her blouse and pulling them out and throwing them into the crowd. What was that about? I don't know. And Heather Nova kicked butt, too. Never heard of her before but she definitely rocked, skinny legs and all. Lucky me I get to see her again tomorrow. Sarah was pretty good but I've seen her be better. Same with Natalie. Bonnie was the best, playing serious guitar, doing some killer duets with her second guitarist, and what a voice! She got Sarah to sing harmony on her last song, really nice. I sure hope the younger set got the idea that's how it's done - no whining, just tell it like it is, from the heart, with style and grace. Oh and Poofie? Yeah, there's a well-reasoned argument. Go ahead, whip it out. Better yet, whyntcha stick your Lisa Lobe in an orifice where it'll cause more pain than your ears, if you can find one. Sorry for thinking you had better taste. Pay a guy a compliment and that's what I get. Get over yourself. Good weather - warm but not excessive, mostly cloudy with a little breeze, which kept it cool. On the whole, it was maybe not quite as good as last year's, though there was plenty of good music. Still, last year's show included Paula Cole and Tracy Chapman. Plus the best musical moment of the year for me (barring an amazing concert by Erin Corday), Sarah singing harmony with Paula on "Carmen." Here's the lineup: Village Stage Donna Martin, local talent winner (more on her later) Wendy Johnson (added last minute when Fontaine was late arriving) Garrison Starr Fontaine (they were nice enough to find a spot for her after all) B Stage Paris Hampton Imani Coppola Heather Nova Mainstage Suzanne Vega Tracy Bonham Me'Shell Ndegeocello Bonnie Raitt Natalie Merchant Sarah McLachlan Thumbnail sketch: Best: Heather Nova. Just rocked the place, with good songs, very well performed, good band, especially her new Danish guitarist Berit Fridahl - - the only downside, and it's minor, was her longtime cellist Nadia Lanman was trying out an electric cello, and wasn't up enough in the mix. Those going to Jones Beach - Make a point of catching her. Kenn, thanks for bringing her to the list's (and my) attention a couple of months ago. I think "Siren" is every bit as good as "Oyster," though the songs are perhaps a little happier, owing to her recently getting married. Second Best: Bonnie Raitt. Never seen her before, and she lived up to my expectations. She put on a great show, not with any contrived theatrics or stage craft, but just by singing and playing great, working with her band - whom she thanked profusely and often - and developing a rapport with the audience. Third Best: Sarah McLachlan. I'm surprised to rank her this low, but I have to be honest and fair, and give credit to others who deserve it. She's here because her set seemed a little perfunctory, not the usual soul-searching. Perhaps it's different this year, now that she's a proven success. Last year there was a sense of adventure, as she and the fair were charting undiscovered territory. She is still the best, IMHO, but even the best can have an off night. Also - not her fault - Camille's voice wasn't loud enough for most of the set, and the interaction between the two is crucial. And the blond guitarist on stage right didn't do a whole lot - probably because the songs on the set list weren't the ones he does leads on. Here's the set list: Last Dance Sweet Surrender Witness Elsewhere Angel Ice Cream Black And White Building A Mystery Possession Encores: Adia What's Goin' On (ensemble) As you can see, nothing from "Touch" or "Solace." Most Disappointing: Natalie Merchant. Her set seemed very subdued, despite all her dancing, with the songs sounding too similar, never really catching fire. I had much the same reaction when I saw the 9,999 Maniacs at The Hatch Shell in Boston on Earth Day. I'll admit this is the first time I'd seen either of them, so this is my only frame of reference, but they did not move me, though I was looking forward to both shows. Also annoying were Natalie's apparent star turns - standing on a pedestal, fooling around with a rhythmic gymnastics ribbon, and playing/singing to the videocam. Especially when she left the stage, she said "Good night" into the camera, walked to the side stage curtain, then remembered and came back to say buh-bye to the crowd. Maybe I'm being picky here, but these little things, plus a sense that her presentation lacked passion, left me dissatisfied. I guess I was expecting more. Tucking a tangent here: Do you remember when someone posted that Nettwerk was coordinating a talent search for local performers at each show? Well I posted so many people that I quite forgot that I'd gotten the word to Donna Martin through a mutual friend, and she got picked for The Meadows show. She showed up for the news conference and was thrilled to see me, thanking me profusely. I had to stop and think, cos I really didn't remember doing so, but I must have. Anyway, someone during the press conference asked her how she got there, and she said how, pointing me out by name. Sarah looked at me and our eyes linked. What could I do but shrug my shoulders? She clearly got that I was an OK guy. So cool! It's moments like this that make the journalism thing worthwhile. Not that there aren't a lot of other perks, but to have a positive effect on a deserving artist's career, to see that something I've done has in some way helped out someone, well it's an intangible but real reward. To say that the day was all downhill from there is an exaggeration, but this was an undeniable thrill, and contributed to my being a bit tongue-tied when my turn came to ask questions. But it didn't end there. For the grand finale, everyone came out to sing Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On." What a sight, to see that much talent on one stage at once. And to see Bonnie Raitt and Heather Nova share a mike, when they could hardly be more different stylistically. Donna Martin seemed a little lost, without a mike nearby. Sarah had a mike to herself - I suppose noone was bold enough - and Goddess bless her inclusive nature, brought Donna over to share her mike. Sarah sang the first verse, Bonnie the second, Natalie the third, and Sarah gave the last verse to Donna! Goddess bless her. Donna must have been just thrilled. Her music is pretty much straight-ahead folk, a little pop, but she did a really good job with the r 'n' b. I know I was one of probably ten people who knew who she was, but it didn't seem to matter, as everyone was having a great time. This was an excellent example of the spirit of Lilith Fair in action, bringing together sisters united in song. Just a few more notes. It was Suzanne Vega's birthday, and Sarah brought an enormous cake with candles out on stage, along with most of the mainstage performers. Apparently Me'Shell Ndegeocello fainted at the end of her set. I don't know why, as I was interviewing Heather Nova. I can't believe she spent her formative years, age 10 - 15, living on a boat with her parents, sailing around the Caribbean. Tracy Bonham rocked the place, too, with her electric violin. I think she'll have a new album out in the fall. She and Sarah came out at the end of Bonnie Raitt's set to collaborate on "Angel From Montgomery" - sweet. Just a few quick notes - Ha!! My goodness it's Tuesday already. I actually have mentioned Garrison on the list a few months ago, but you guys may not have seen it. I discovered last year through Lilith Fair and have to admit, I really like her. It is hard to judge an artist on just one full-length album, but her CD, "Eighteen Over Me" is superb and I have to say that I have a lot of faith in her talent. But, what you said about her being an aquired taste is true. Her voice, like Leah Andreone's (another one that I like and has been discussed on the list), is unusual and I'm sure could be put into the "aquired" tastes category. By any means, Garrison comes highly recommended by me. If you get a chance to grab her CD or see her live ... I'd take it.
