NAR AHHH!!! Before they were rock stars II came on last night, and they were showing donny osmond, and I was soo excited about Paula, and then THE CABLE WENT OUT!!!! I was sooo mad!!! Then I kept trying to get on the 2 AOL numbers for my town, BOTH BUSY, so I figured I guess because its night, its usually like that at night sometimes. Well....I was bored so I called my friend. When I called my friend, when we were talking, the cable went back on. I was soo excited. I watched tv for about 30 min, and what happens? THE CABLE GOES OUT AGAIN!!!!Well...I need my tv to fall asleep to, so I feel asleep to the sound and then the occasional crackling every 5 min LOL. Well..I wake up today at 6, turn on tv, its out still. I go back to sleep. I turn it on at 7 something,. STILL OUT! Then I go back to sleep. I wake up at 8 something, ITS STILL OUT!!!!!!!! Then..I figure, AOL probably isn't busy now, so for 30 min I try these 2 freehold numbers to get on, which are my town's 2 numbers, THEY"RE STILL BUSY< because people in my town I dont think have cable today, so they're probably all bored like me. Well..I get really frustrated and desperate and connect with 2 numbers from another town, which probably cost money, so here I am, and the cable is STILL OUT!!! UGH!!! and I"ll have to get off soon, I'm already on for 17 min, and if it costs money, it might be a lot. DAMN AOL AND CABLE!!! AHHHHH! I'm going insane. I can't decide whether or not to go to see Paula Cole at the H.O.R.D.E. festival or whatever.. I'm not sure what HORDE is, but my father said that there'd be a bunch of other artists there, so Paula prolly wouldn't be on very long, and that we wouldn't be as close as before.. Before, I saw PC in a Free concert, and we were pretty close to stage. So, I can't decide whether or not to go, because it's like I've already been to the better concert (the free one where it was just her) Anyway, try to let me know if I should go or not. :) vansciver@vabch.com - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Jul 1998 15:05:24 -0400 From: "Kenn" Subject: Re: (harbinger) Part Two, etc. ... Personally, I don't see _Flaming Red_ as a radical departure from _Living With Ghosts_. I mean, Patty's folk/country/rockabilly vocals and her storytelling lyrics are mostly still intact. The only major difference is a fuller band and the use of electronic sound. I really love "Let Him Fly" and "Every Little Bit" just the way they sound on _LWG_, but the remix versions on the single for "Let Him Fly," which includes new instrumental tracks, are wonderful, too. > although i dig flaming red, i can hear the pseudo portishead/beth orton > kinda backbeats, and in several songs it seems like these "affects" > kinda bring down patty's voice (no small feat)... another reason i guess > i am a little miffed with flaming red is the fact that i saw her on a solo > acoustic tour earlier this year, and she did several of the songs on > flaming red with just her and her guitar, and that show completely > blew me away... flaming red rocked so hard, and the way she did tony > was just so different from the way it appears on the cd... I guess I'm not bothered in the least by the way _Flaming Red_ sounds because I never had any expectations of it. Patty's music still hasn't reached that level of sounding totally commercially-conscious or overly produced. As far as her live performances sounding much different from her album performances, that's really no different than the songs from _Harbinger_ that Paula has been performing live. Paula's renditions of those songs are markedly different than how they sound on the album. Take "Hitler's Brothers," for example. The sound in the live show is through the roof compared to the watered-down sound on the album. And the same is true of "Suwannee Jo." Wonderful song on the Blue In The Face soundtrack, but it's certainly not the song she does live. I think it's that kind of dichotomy that makes Patty's decision to take a different approach to the instrumentation of _Flaming Red_ an even better one and increases my admiration for her as an artist. By working with her sound on the album, she gives her more options when it comes to her live performances and increases the possibility of getting different mixes on the b-sides of her singles. Certainly no one complains about Sarah McLachlan knocking out seven different versions of "Good Enough" or "Hold On." In fact, that has become a popular gimmick of Sarah's. You know... she releases the album and then makes two or three alternate versions (piano versions, violin mixes, etc.) that appear only on the singles. I guess one could look at that as an artist wishing to learn from herself by interpreting her own music or one could look at it as a marketing ploy that puts a lot of money in Sarah's ever-fattening pockets. I'm guessing it falls somewhere in between and I say more power to her. Who wants to start making bets that we are all having this same conversation next year or whenever Paula comes out with her new album? Peace.
