I of > course will buy it when it comes out here (or get it through CD Now), > but want to live vicariously until it reaches me. I just bought the album a few days ago, but I've been listening to an advance copy of the CD for a few weeks now, Steve, and I have to say that I am just as excited by the direction Patty took with this new album as I was when I discovered Jen Trynin last year. You already know that I fell in love with _Living With Ghosts_ a long time ago. There was a beautiful organic quality to Patty's first album. First off, the album is largely performed unplugged. Add on to that Patty's sound on that album which was a mix of a folk/country with something bordering on the sound you hear in social activism ballads. Her voice reminds me of someone who has seen some things in life, especially when she hits certain portions of songs like "Moses" or "You Never Get What You Want" where she sounds raw and angry and hurt and tired all at once. Patty's songs tend to have some of the confessional quality present in Paula's music, but Patty is first and foremost a storyteller. As such I guess she falls somewhere between Paula and Dar Williams. The new album, _Flaming Red_, is a definite departure from the sound Patty found on _Living With Ghosts_. Where _LWG_ was largely acoustic and definitely guitar driven, _Flaming Red_ (which, instrumentally, still finds its heart and soul in Patty's guitar work) is produced and arranged with a much fuller sound and with wonderful use of synths and other electronica. Vocally, much of the twang from _LWG_ is gone. At first listen, I thought I was going to miss that twang. I like that country sound. On this album, it's overshadowed by the straight-forward rockgirl sound Patty is capable of pulling out of herself, but the twang is still there simmering under the surface. To be continued..... Here's the song-by-song review: Flaming Red - WOW!!! What a way to start off the album!! Patty comes in on the title track kickin' ass with a down 'n dirty fiddle-sawin' guitar-hammerin' country mountain rock song that paints a quick picture of a very urban scene. Hot, hot song and aptly named. My favorite song on the album. One Big Love - Much more of a "peaceful easy feelin'" kind of song than "Flaming Red." A little bit too sing-song for my taste (reminds me of a Sheryl Crow tune for some reason) through the verses of the song, but Patty makes a great save in the chorus. It's basically a happy little hippie love song. Tony - One of the best songs on the album. The song is about a gay friend who commits suicide. Steve, do you remember in "Moses" that Patty mentions having "a best friend who is queer"? This guy seems to have been someone pretty important in her life. In addition to being mentioned in "Moses," Patty has dedicated "Tony" to him on the new album (I also think "Goodbye" is dedicated to him, too, but it's hard to say for sure). The song itself has a cool sound and lyrically it's great. Granted, I'm biased because (a) I'm gay and (b) a friend of mine who couldn't deal with being gay committed suicide ten years ago, but I think pretty much everyone would like this song no matter what their experience. This song deals with the anger and frustration and confusion felt by those left behind by those who die at their own hands. Change - OK song, I suppose. Not great. Nothing really good or bad to say about it. I let it play and don't hit the skip button, if that's any consolation. Goodbye - This is the other one I think is dedicated to her gay friend. Very sad song about never seeing someone you love again. I like this song very much because not only does it sound great, but it's one of those great songs that can be taken two different ways - like it's being sung to the dead friend or like it's being sung to a lover who is gone for good. There's none of the anger of "Tony" in this one, though. Mainly just sad. Carry Me - I'm still trying to figure out what "Carry Me" is about. Vocally and instrumentally, I like it a lot, but the vocals seem rather trite to me at this point in my listenings. I'm hoping a few more listens might uncover something more meaningful than what is showing up on the surface. Again, no raves about this song, but it's still nice enough to listen to. Christina - Patty seems to do really well on the songs that are named after people. "Christina" is no exception. Lovely lyrics that emote the same sense of love and friendship that "Sweet Lorraine" or Paula's "Carmen" do. "Christina" could keep up with "Carmen" or Sarah Mc's "Mary" any day of the week. Excellent song. Wiggley Fingers - This one rates as my second favorite song on the album and will probably end up being up there in my top five favorite Patty songs. If you like Joan Osborne's lyrics and vocal style, then you would LOOOOVE this song. Funky hardball rhythm and blues stuff coming from Patty's voice on this one and the lyrics are just awesome. Blue Sky - Again, this is one of the songs on the album that leaves me less than enthralled. I'm not going to slam any of the songs on the album (well, maybe one....), but a few of them just aren't really much to write home about. They don't suck, they're just ... well, ... they're just sorta there and not doing much. This one and "Change" and "Carry Me" all fall into that same category. Big Daddy - The only song on the album I'll slam. In my opinion, it's sappy and boring and I don't like it. The cute factor in this song is way up there and I just can't deal with it without my gag reflex being tested. Just like with Paula's "Black Boots" it's the skip button all the way. Go Now - Totally unexpected jazz number right at the end of the album and it scores big-time. The first few strains of the song remind me of Tom Waits in some ways, but once the lyrics get going the Tom Waits feel fades. Basically, this is a sweet, sexy, hopeful song about simple, happy love between two people. Mary - In some ways, this song is lyrically very much like Sarah Mc's "Mary." It's about a woman who takes care of others but her own life and the stuff she has to deal with is forgotten by most everyone. I suppose that also makes it a bit like Paula's "Happy Home," too. Anyway, Patty's Mary is apparently *the* Mary - Jesus' mom. The song sympathizes with her for what she had to bear after the Crucifixion as a mother. Turns out Patty didn't write the lyrics to this one, but it's a cool song. Peter Pan - One hell of a heartwrencher. My take on this song is that it is being sung to a little boy who died after a prolonged illness. There's one line in the song where Patty sings "I believe you now when you say that this will hurt." That's what makes me think the child was sick for a while. Reminds me of a kid not wanting to get a shot. And there's another part of the song where Patty sings: I wrote a note to tell you how you matter When the rain came down All the letters scattered And washed away Drifted off to Never Where you'll be safe from me now forever The Peter Pan imagery also lends itself to being about a child who died because Peter Pan was the boy who never grew up. The part of the song that breaks my heart is when she sings "where you'll be safe from me now forever." It makes me think about a woman who felt that she might not be a good enough mother (as a lot of new mothers feel) and, from the time of the boy's birth, that she thought she might end up hurting him somehow, like by raising him to be less than he could be. Such a poignant song and it is sung so softly and honestly. Quite beautiful. So, here's the breakdown.... There are 13 songs on the album. I am really totally over-the-top crazy about two of them. I love four others already and will probably get more attached to them in a very short time. Another four are good songs that I like a lot, but need more time to hear and decide. Two others are OK songs that I don't hate. And, finally, there's only one totally lame song on the whole album. I'm giving it two thumbs way up. This album shows that Patty has the same attitude about growing as a musician that Paula and some others have. She isn't painting herself into a corner and that is exciting to those of us who like to watch our favorite musicians change their sound every now and then. Hearing _Flaming Red_ makes me even more anxious to hear what Paula is going to do next. In fact, someone recently mentioned that he is looking for a new angry female kind of rocker girl to listen to. Check out Patty. I think she's going to end up doing some very great things in her career and I'm just very glad to have found her early on. Just remember that she's not Paula, so don't go to her expecting to find that kind of music. She has her own sound and it works so well. And, while I'm at it (like this post isn't already long enough) I might as well plug another vocalist. She's most assuredly not an angry rock chick, but her voice is wonderful. Her name is Eva Cassidy and her rendition of Sting's "Fields Of Gold" is one of the most gorgeous covers ever. I bought her last album _Songbird_ (all cover tunes) and it is stupendous. A sweet, strong and surprisingly "black" voice coming out of a little white woman who died way too soon. Give her a listen, too. Hope you enjoy _Flaming Red_, Steve!! And to those of you who have not tasted from the fountain of Patty - get on the stick! Peace. I just picked it up today because I was after the Patty Griffin stuff on the album and happened to notice that The Blue Heelers were on there, too. The song, "Truckstop Coffee," doesn't really do much for me, but I thought the other subscriber might be happy to know about it. I'll have to listen to the rest of the CD before I could say whether I like the whole thing. It's worth it to me just for Patty's "Regarding Mary." :^) Peace. Hey Kenn!!! Great to see that you are rocking out to flaming red :).... Ive been listening to it for awhile also, and while im not going to post a blow by blow of the cd, i will offer a compare and contrast of the musical style... i have a really good friend online who is buddies with patty's manager, and one of the things he said about the radical departure from living with ghosts is the fact that they feel this new musical direction is what patty needs in order to get recognition in the music business... when she told me that i was kinda pissed, because i think her stylings on living with ghosts were the stuff of classic musical work... although i dig flaming red, i can hear the pseudo portishead/beth orton kinda backbeats, and in several songs it seems like these "affects" kinda bring down patty's voice (no small feat)... another reason i guess i am a little miffed with flaming red is the fact that i saw her on a solo acoustic tour earlier this year, and she did several of the songs on flaming red with just her and her guitar, and that show completely blew me away... flaming red rocked so hard, and the way she did tony was just so different from the way it appears on the cd... all in all, i think living with ghosts kinda set her apart from alot of the other female singers of the lilith era.. she still has that austin kinda sound that lou ann barton really brought forth a few years ago, but i know that she is based in nashville now, and that whole scene is kinda weird to say the least (i would never have thought politics in the nashville music business would be so bad, but i guess it is), but the thing i dig the most is that shes a new england babe and still roots for the red sox... sorry about the non paula content... to be honest, i have been so busy at work, and unfortunately, i dont even think im going to be to attend the paula show at nautica stage in cleveland in a few weeks.. silly me.. i will travel 3 hours to see her in pittsburgh, but not even go 45 minutes to see her in the flats! - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Jun 1998 23:36:16 EDT From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: (harbinger) didja see her on VH-1?
