Hi all Anticipation mounts as Lilith Fair starts this weekend out west and wends its way eastward. Meanwhile, a dissenting voice rears its head . . . Friday's issue of New Times LA features an extensive article largely slamming Lilith and Sarah for reasons I haven't yet determined. The article, by Gina Arnold, is called "Fair Game," the subtitle says "Feminism POSING as trend, profit masquerading as activism, and a bunch of really bad songs: Why Lilith Fair isn't so fair at all," and can be found at http://www.newtimesla.com/1998/061898. It's long - over 20 printed pages - so I've only scanned it so far, but she does make a few valid points (dammit!), although not enough to discredit the whole extremely positive and long overdue event on the basis of a few nitpicks. As you can imagine t he folks on the lilith-fair-fans list are in a tizzy over this. If you could tell me what the point of the article was, I could comment. Looked like several pages of general whining. She doesn't like folky acts, so she hates lilith fair. Bands she does like were asked and said no, and so I guess it's Sarah's fault they said no. Kind of a weird article, really. In one paragraph she says the Lilith acts couldn't fill a small hall separately, and then in another they're a trend taking over music. The part I was amused by was the strong suggestion that Sleater-Kinney is so out there that of course they would refused to be associated with lilith fair. I've got some of the their cds, and now that they learned how to play their instruments they sound like Velocity Girl. I'll be going to Paula's show on 7/15 at Interlochen, MI. Anyone else going? Or, if you're in the area, good seats are still available. I work at the box office there, and am trying to upgrade my tickets even more. :) Anyway, any clue as to who her opening act will be, or if she'll have one? Also, does she do meet and greets with fans? I'd -love- to meet her. Thanks in advance. I know someone mentioned it but I just got it today and it is soooo great!!!! The cover shot is great of Sarah, Missy, Natalie, Paula, and LIz. And then the solo pic of Paula is too cute ( I think)!!! And then finally the last pic, it's a group shot, it just made me laugh. They look like they are all having just the best time!!! Paula does say some interesting comments- like about photo shoots and it really being totally up to the person in charge what happens. Specifically a comment by PC that I found surprising was regarding the US interview, where she was lying down with the fruit and produce all around her. She basically said that when she showed up for the photo shoot some linen gauze type rags were there and they said, "Wear this!" And then she said being photographed around the fruit and veggies she felt like people who saw the picture would be getting the idea that she was supposed to be eaten, or that she looked good and yummy. My reasoning for being suprised by Paula saying this about the US shoot is the fact that what she was made to wear by the folks at US looks very similar to what she wore in the video for IDWTW. So to me I thought that Paula liked that look and style- it's cool to find out what Paula REALLY thinks about stuff! :) I find my perception tends to be off sometimes. If ya'll would like to see the entire article or just Paula's contributions I would be happy to type it up and post it to the list.
