This is the first time I've ever listened to Heather and must say that I'm very impressed. This CD is incredibly infectious... I have a job that allows me to listen to CDs all day long through headphones, and I've basically been listening to this CD all day long for the last two days! Because I am not really familiar with any of her other work (besides the names of them, that is!! I've already checked out her discography on the web), I was wondering how other Heather Nova fans on this list would compare "Siren" to her earlier work. Being a very long time fan of Heather's, I feel I can actually answer this question with some authority. Both the albums Siren and Oyster have the feel of production work on them, the results of working with Sony and V2. If you get any of her older albums such as Glow Stars, Blow, or Live from the Milky Way, you will get a better feel for how she is live, with the raw emotional power that she can produce. Also, if you really hunt, you can find her first album (the Frith recordings), which was recently re-released as The First Recordings. To get a feel for how her older stuff is, try listening to "I'm Alive" and "Paper Cup" from the Siren album. These are both good indicators of what her earlier stuff is like. On a personal note, I do like the direction that her music is heading in. Songs like "Heart and Shoulder", "Blood of Me", and "Ruby Red" are wonderful songs that still hold her general feel but also display an expansion in her range. Also, the b-sides on both of the Siren singles are very good, especially the acoustic version of "London Rain". I've been listening to Heather for quite a few years now (in fact, even longer than I've been following Paula). I've had _Siren_ long enough to listen to it several times and so far I'm not terribly impressed. I hoped that this album was going to knock my socks off by outshining all of Heather's other albums, but my own personal opinion is that _Siren_ doesn't reflect her talents as well as the previous albums and that, perhaps, too many producers (and not enough Heather) spoiled the broth. There are a few songs on the new album that I like very much ("Winterblue" is probably my fave), but for the most part, the lyrics (mostly just awful when held to the light of Heather's previous work), vocals and sound of the songs on _Siren_ pale in comparison to its predecessors. Undoubtedly, my favorite Heather Nova album to date is _Glow Stars_, with _Oyster_ following a very close second. I would say that you should probably hold off on _Live From The Milky Way_ (the live CD recorded at the Milkeweg in Amsterdam). That particular CD is cool enough and all, but it's just not the CD on which to cut your Heather teeth. _Blow_ is also a really good album, but not as good as _Glow Stars_ or _Oyster_. You know I wouldn't steer you wrong, Holly. ;^) Peace. I have it on good authority (the demi-goddess herself) that it will be released August 11. She will also tour, starting in September, with a multi-media presentation including projections and "intelligent lights" - whatever that is. BTW, her speaking voice is in her lower register, with its unmistakable husky texture. She's also very funny to talk with, which I wouldn't have expected from the seriousness of her music, what little I've heard (Building The Colossus, The Keep). This may already be common knowledge to those on the ecto list, but it's news to me.
