I believe I've mentioned this occasionally but never in much detail. I never did introduce myself when I joined the list, so this is probably overdue. I'll try to keep this short - for once. And if you're not interested, just ignore. I write for Mixx Magazine, an independent regional monthly with a circulation of about 50 - 60,000 distributed for free throughout CT, Boston (available at Newbury Comics), and locations in NYC, LI, upstate NY (near CT border), and central MA. It is operated by a mostly volunteer staff, who are motivated by a love of music rather than any industry/financial concerns. That's pretty much my standard blurb, but the key point here, and what keeps me hanging in despite frustration, condescension, and apathy, is that my editor lets me say whatever I want and prints whatever I say. Since he's a graphic artist, he's more concerned with how the page looks than what's on it, and trusts my better judgement. He usually is justified in doing so, with my typically impeccable tast and good common sense. (Well, somebody has to say so) You can also surf to our website at www.intermixx.com and read the last few issues, which are posted just as they look printed. Or so I'm told. I never go there because it takes too long to load the graphics on my laptop, and besides I have the hardcopy. There are also bios/photos of many staff members, though not mine - I don't photograph well, and I can't pretty myself because mirrors do not show my reflection . . . Anyway, the current issue features my reviews of some 1996 releases which had missed my attention at the time I put out my list - whoa, back up. You see, my list is called "The Best Albums Of XXXX That You Probably Haven't Heard Of (But Should Have)." This gives me a means of praising artists who produce excellent work which eludes the awareness of the general public. Since Paula, Sarah, and Shawn are too well-known, I begrudgingly left them off my list. I figured out a way around my self-imposed obscurity rule by concocting a list of albums released in 1996 that *I* hadn't heard of - sneaky, but it worked. Anyway, my 1997 list is at the site ,too, in the previous issue. The next issue features my review of Paula's show at Toad's Place - previewed right here! - a Shawn show, a Sarah show, and all kinds of stuff. Also, possibly the KISS 108 show. It looked like it would have to go into the following issue, since it occurred after the deadline. However, the current issue is delayed -for once, it's not my fault - so maybe I can get it in. I could always post my review to the list, i don't think that would be copyright infringement. BTW, Mixx does accept unsolicited submissions, and you can e-mail at mixxmag@intermixx.com I usually try not to make a big thing about my press status because 1) this is a fan list, not an industry list, and everyone's opinion should have equal validity; 2) a lot of people think that a "professional" writer's opinion is somehow more important or correct than their own (not true - writers are just people with more or less the same plusses and minusses, just maybe a little more informed) and I don't want people to feel intimidated; 3) it usually has nothing to do with what I say or feel. In fact, I tend to mention my writer status only if it's somehow directly connected to whatever I'm saying, like Mariah's diva impersonation, which I endured in a press-only area. Also, as far as being informed, there are plenty of people who are more informed than I (You know who you are), so that's pretty moot. A lot of what I know has been gleaned from the 'net, and anyone can find out an awful lot of info about just about anything if you know where to look. (Tip: add bookmarks, a big time and memory saver). In fact, harbinger is more a source of info than an outlet for me, and almost every day I hear about intriguing artists, events, and ideas. For instance, if it weren't for the Angel Music thread I wouldn't have heard about Joy Eden Harrison (thanks, Joel!), whose "Angel Town" CD is fabulous and would have made my Top Ten List if it weren't three years old already - darn it. BTW, I don't do this for a living, I do it cos I love the music. I have a real-life day job - the running joke is that, like many other self-respecting musicians who can't get a gig, I do computers - which helps me by not beong connected with the industry. That is , gives me perspective and balance. I hope that helps give you(all) an idea of who I am. Sorry I went on so long - I usually don't mean to but I usually do - I could use a stricter editor. Sometimes. I have 2 webpages now: MY CHANTAL KREVIAZUK PAGE: http://members.tripod.com/~Surrounded/index-2.html MY IMANI COPPOLA PAGE: http://members.tripod.com/~ImaniFan/imanicoppola.html Oh, did anyone catch the MTV Movie Awards? That Dawsons Creek part was FUNNY!!!!!!! If you didnt catch it heres what happened: Joey and Dawson are watching the MTV Awards in his room. they start talking about action sequences&stuff, when Joey gets off his bed, and says "I think we should create our own action sequence" and Dawsons all, "Huh?" So, after she says that, you can hear Paula C's I DONT WANT TO WAIT. They very slowly move towards eachother (ABOUT TO KISS!), when suddenly, Samuel L Jackson comes in his room through the window, smashes the cd player, and dawson and joey stop quickly. They dont do anything now. They stare at him. So he says, "alright" and starts singing IDWTW's chorus. Then they kiss. The end. That was funny! The crowd went wild laughing!!! I got my Tori Amos tickets for Sacramento last weekend. _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. Especially the "Basted in Blood" song on weekend update. If you only watch for that, it's enough. It's a keeper all right!! Cracks up everyone I know, including my mom and my sister!! Oh and if you are a Sheryl Crow fan (is anyone besides me and hol on this list?) watch Sessions at West 54th tonight, she's on with Gillian Welch (I think that's her name), it's very cool. katie _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. I wouldn't be surprised if the latest issue is all gone by now, as it came out a while ago. Look for it at music stores, clubs, Subway shops - wherever you might find other free papers like The Phoenix or The Advocate. I'm not sure where you live (Boston area?), but I know it's out there. When Jules Verdone came to New Haven a few months ago she said she'd picked it up and liked what I'd written - that was a big boost to my self-confidence, as she's quite a writer herself. If you can't find it at these places, I guess you could e-mail Mixx offices at mixxmag@intermixx.com and ask for a detailed list of distribution points. Or you could e-mail me your address and I could send you some copies. Happy hunting!
