Yes, Paula, I was going for sarcasm. [Openers] Someone (can't recall who) alluded to the fact that it was alright to sit and demand others to sit because Antigone Rising were the openers. At the few GA concerts I've been to, I've always stood for the openers as well as the headliners. Though, I'll do my best not to disturb the pleasure of my fellow fans. I'll stand off to the side (if I'm not at risk of losing my valued spot for the main event). I'll even lean against a wall or tree or something to avoid sitting (hi, Kenn) if I'm not really into it. Steve, you explained why better than I can. [Standers] I groove in my own way, thank you, and just because others are sitting doesn't mean I have to. But I won't go stand in front of everyone to make a spectacle of myself. On some songs, observers have difficulty determining if I am falling asleep or if I'm simply closing my eyes and swaying. If my own personal means of expression bother somebody else, and I'm already doing what I can not to bother them, I'll ignore them. I have too much to worry about when I'm away from a concert. I'm not going to get upset at somebody who is looking to keep me from enjoying myself. And if I do happen to be sitting (say... lawn seats), I'm not going to get upset at somebody who happens to be up and dancing. Watching others is also part of the spectacle of a concert, I might add. [Talkers] And the worst concert I've been to was on February 29, 1992. Floor seating, and tix were nothing to brag about. But these seats were pretty damn good, except for two drunk bastards sitting behind us talking (loudly, as drunks tend to do) through the ENTIRE concert. At the very beginning of my date's favorite song (a quiet song, too), I turned around and (also loudly) berated, "Did you come to talk or'd you come for the music?!" That kept them quiet through that one song, luckily. But that still ranks up there as the worst concert I've been to. [pseudo-Paula content] I can make one of two Lilith concerts this year: Hartford, CT, July 11, or Saratoga, NY, July 12. Here are the two lineups Hartford: Saratoga: Sarah McLachlan (of course) Sarah (of course) Bonnie Raitt Bonnie Raitt Tracy Bonham Tracy Bonham Natalie Merchant Natalie Merchant Susanne Vega Imani Coppola Imani Coppola Lauryn Hill Lauryn Hill Heather Nova Heather Nova Beth Orton Davina Abba Rage Fontaine Donna Martin Garrison Starr So I'm selfishly soliciting advice on these two dates. I can make only one of them, and Saratoga is 45 minutes away, where Hartford is ~2 hours. Neither has Paula (major bummer), and Susanne Vega is not worth the extra drive time, in my opinion. Any input on the other differences? Can anyone sell me on Hartford? With a little > hard work, you will become what you believe. You bring up such a good point, Holly. How often have we heard others around us bemoaning their bad marriage, ungrateful kids, condescending boss, poor health, love handles, lack of higher education, et al ??? My entire family still lives back in the northern Midwest and during my weekly call back to the ol' homestead, I am reminded of how many people there are in the world who sit on their hands and wait for life to have its way with them instead of going out there and proactively making a peacable and productive place for themselves in the world around them. And then, once they've sat around doing nothing but existing, they want for others to pity them as much as they pity themselves. They willingly allow their fear to bind and blind them absolutely. It takes courage to get out there and make your life not only worth living for yourself, but worthwhile to others around you and to the world at large. And it's fear, I believe, that most often gives birth to that courage. For me, it was fear of ending up like those unhappy people I grew up around. At the same time, that same fear that prompted me to make changes is the fear that keeps many people from making any kind of effort to change who they are and how they live. If people could just understand that we all just have to learn to use that fear as a propellant instead of a ball and chain. It's up to us to decide how to use our emotions. I'm so glad to hear that you've learned to hold yourself accountable for where you are in life and how you feel about it. It takes time, but once you're there, life is never the same again. Enjoy it. It just keeps getting better and better with every terrifying (it should feel scary if you're doing it right) step you take. Thanks for the great post, Holly! :^) Peace. Sarah was out there making a ton of money for herself and Nettwerk, promoting unknown talent, and donating profit to women's charities all over the country. On top of all this, she constantly had to defend the "women only" concept to the press. In doing all this, not only did she make the world a better place, she proved that it could be done, and she also became a *relatively* powerful person in the music industry. I remember feeling a bit overwhelmed and thinking how amazing it was that all of this good came from a woman who once wrote, "and I fear I have nothing to give... I have so much to lose." - -Holly ;) - ------------------------------ To unsubscribe, mail majordomo@smoe.org with: unsubscribe harbinger Please note the new majordomo address To buy Paula merchandise from Paula(!) try: http://pw2.netcom.com/~ilml/pcmerch.html Digest, further unsub and problems FAQ at: http://www.netaxs.com/~jgreshes/lists/harbinger.html For This Fire kinda-lyrics write Riphug@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 04 Jun 1998 14:40:07 -0700 From: Joel Siegfried Subject: (harbinger) CD-Now Special June $10.00 Discount Dear Paula Fans, CD-Now is offering a special discount until June 30th on every purchase over $20.00. Back in the early 90's I first heard them and I just recently decided to look them up again a couple of days ago online. They are a pop/electronica sounding group and they were on Sony records from a short while before starting their own label Orangewerks. Recently they just signed on to Jarrett Records of Austin, TX... Anyways I was just curious......sorry to take up space in your email but sometimes I feel like I am the only person who listens to some of the music I listen to....
