Went to see Sarah M.'s free pre-Lilith concert in Bryant Park in NYC tonight. Very nice show. Two local acts, Antigone Rising and Eden White, opened the show. Antigone Rising is a really great group. Five women in a guitar driven band that remind me very much of Indigo Girls. High energy and very cool people. Eden White's act is based more on jazz accents and is more piano and rhythm driven. That woman can play the hell out of a piano. Rebekah also appeared at the show. She seems like she'd be a nice person and she definitely likes to perform. She did her "Sin So Well" song (I have no idea if that's the actual name of the song or not) and it was a good number, but the other songs she did were even better. I especially liked the one she wrote for her four year old niece (last song on her album). Sarah was great! I haven't heard her voice sound so good in ages. She did Adia, Building A Mystery, Possession and Sweet Surrender. I was thrilled to notice that Ash and Camille have learned to tone down and even omit their vocal contributions on Sweet Surrender. Looks like those two are finally letting Sarah be the one show sings. Getting ready to watch Sarah do Angel on Letterman now. One last note... during the show, the folks who coordinated the event showed a promo spot on the big screens that, in addition to "unveiling" Sarah's big-ass billboard in Times Square, also showed a spot about a layout in the upcoming issue of Vogue (the American edition) featuring Sarah, Rebekah, Liz Phair, N'Dea Davenport, K's Choice, Mary Lou Lord (that's just for you, Rachel K.B.!) Tara MacLean and a few other Lilith artists. I didn't see Paula in any of the shots they showed. I'm guessing she wasn't at that shoot. :^( Thanks to those of who you clued me in to this concert tonight. My friend and I had a great time and it was very nice seeing Sarah again. Peace. Maybe everyone had the sense to stay home and avoid the mob. I've rarely displayed such good sense where Sarah is concerned. So I was unable to talk myself out of driving the 150 mile round trip to hear her do four songs - in other words, I went. I drove in after work, arriving around 7:30. Naturaly the park was packed with people who had been waiting all afternoon. Even so, some kind people right up front made room for me. This show started with the New York Lilith Fair talent show winners. Antigone Rising, five females with guitars, bass, and lots of strong vocal harmonies, were quite good. They may have been trying a little too hard to impress, as I thought they could have eased up on their vocal attack a bit, but they really showed some promise. They were good at self-promotion, too, giving away hats and buttons. Eden White was OK but nothing special, a little too mainstream/lightweight for me. BTW, they each got 3 songs, and for both of them Sarah could be glimpsed checking them out from the side of the stage. Rebekah really kicked butt, much less timid than at the KISS FM bash. Roared right into "Hey Genius", chilled out with "Little Black Girl", rocked again with the Stones' "Get Off Of My Cloud", and closed with that funky, slinky "Sin So Well." Personally, I disagree with doing a cover tune in a short set, but the audience dug it. Sarah wasted no time onstage, starting with "Adia," then jumping right into "Building A Mystery." A powerful "Possession" followed, with Sarah singing the first verse slightly behind the beat, producing an eerie tension, then locking in for the second verse. At the end she and Camille hit this high harmony that went through distortion into white noise - just unreal. Maybe it was more than the sound people were expecting. I sure wasn't. Then she closed with "Sweet Surrender." I wondered what goes through Ash's mind when he has to sing the words "Who are you?" to back up his wife. Building a mystery, every day. . . Hmm, food for thought. So it was really cool, glad I went, glad I got back in time to catch her do "Angel" on Letterman. The biggest bummer was the dozen or so people front and center who would NOT sit down during the opening acts, causing many other people to repeatedly yell at them to sit down, which they largely ignored. I don't know which group was more annoying, but being in the middle of that brouhaha really sucked. But I hung in there all the same. Oh here's a tip for those in shouting distance of New York. We are soon to be blessed with a rare appearance by Sinead Lohan. She is the Irish songstress with the cornrows who was introduced to these shores (more or less) by Joan Baez last year. Joan did two of her songs, "No Mermaid" and "Who Do You Think I Am" on her most recent CD, and brought her to Newport last year. She will be at Arlene Grocery on Thursday, 8:00 Her second album should be out in mid-July on Interscope.
